Did Lorraine Kelly ever do real journalism?

am just wondering , her morning programme seems to be full of frothy nonsense and camp guys working with her, no substance or anything worth watching

I wonder if she ever feels like she can't go back to doing anything real or interesting now, its as if cos she lost weight all she knows about now is hairstyles and twirly skirts

good morning britain deals more with news and current affairs, its more of a mix, Lorraine seems to be more comfort viewing and I guess there is a place for that, I just wonder if she feels she would want to do more or if she's found her niche

I read she's going to be co hosting a saturday night programme about weddings I think, more froth, maybe that's what she likes.

good luck to her, but I cant feel when I see her twirling and simpering in the opening of her show then seeing the content of whats on, I wonder if she hankers for more depth, more interest

Any female journo who made it through the 70s and 80s to success on their own steam is a success in my book. She may be frothy now because that's what sells but she ain't stupid and there's more to it than being a celeb who reads an autocue.

If she wasn't delivering what people want, she wouldn't be there. That makes her a success.

Keilninnock · 21/03/2018 12:22

And DFO to the "I never watch it but accidently caught 5 seconds when someone else had this on so I know everything" posts. If we were to believe the pearl clutching beaters, Big Brother is also only seen "accidently" and don't get me started on the happy meal experts who experienced that by proxy 😀

A bit of crap is a comfort, whether a day off work sick watching junk or the occasional McDonald's after a busy day. It's ok to admit it!

Takfujuimoto · 21/03/2018 12:41

I used to watch her and other morning programs during maternity leave with my eldest and after a while I felt my brain cells dulling so I don't watch it anymore.

I find that life is easier and less fraught when I disengage with anything I find annoying.

Stop watching her, I'm sure she couldn't care less of a shiny shite.

BlancheM · 21/03/2018 13:19

God she makes me cringe. If she is an intelligent woman with an academic background, she must be gutted to be stuck in such a vacuous, silly role now. She's probably briefed to stick to a limited vocabulary, and use it on repeat, and ask daft questions, and make sure to bring anything deep or meaningful back round to frothy and superficial. 'Oh you've got an important message, sure, sure, but what about that amazing dress you wore the other year, hahaha, have you seen my cute dog?' She must be getting paid ALOT to go along with it.

Mydoghatesthebath · 21/03/2018 13:24

sort of comfort for grannies

Op so you sneer at older women? Women who twirl and simper and camp gay guys

You sound delightful Confused

Mydoghatesthebath · 21/03/2018 13:25

Keiln

Well exactly. She ain’t the stupid one here.

The80sweregreat · 21/03/2018 15:00

She certainly isn't stupid , she seems very savvy and ( i would imagine) she can name her own fee for doing her segment of the show.

She is a huge success in what must be a very competitive field.

YourVagesty · 21/03/2018 15:09

Can't stand Lorraine Kelly. So vacuous

HildaZelda · 21/03/2018 15:14

Don't like her at all. I just find her really false.

Deshasafraisy · 21/03/2018 15:19

Some people like saccharine easy to watch tv, I’m sure LK enjoys her job or at least is comforted by her paypacket on the bad days. There’s plenty of channels to choose if you feel like switching over.

Battytwatty · 21/03/2018 15:19

I'm surprised to read how intelligent she is as she comes across as a giggling halfwit

Roussette · 21/03/2018 15:21

I stopped watching GMB a while back for a reason below....

I don't dislike the woman because I don't know her but I cannot bear watching her.. such nonsense she talks, and she's an awful interviewer I think.

However, I have a theory, bear with me. When she'd done something like 30, 40 or whatever years in showbusiness they did a tribute on Good Morning B. It lasted about 20 minutes. Next morning they did another tribute, next morning another. It lasted ALL week and I am not exaggerating. It was wall to wall Lorraine, culminating in huge cake and flowers on the Friday. To have this much coverage, she obviously has something on the Controller of that programme and is blackmailing him Grin
That's when I stopped watching.

Roussette · 21/03/2018 15:24

Roni Ancona did a wonderful spoof of her. So true and very funny

frankchickens · 21/03/2018 15:30

I couldn't care less if anyone thinks I'm being nasty, I will discuss her all I want, as for the sisterhood comment....lame!!!!!

Fair enough. It's pretty lame posting a passive aggressive question about her career with clear underlying implication that a 10 second Google could answer - but we're all different.

Bluesmartiesarebest · 21/03/2018 15:30

I'm one of the millions who enjoy her show and happily admit it. Lorraine is brilliant at what she does and the point of people like me watching is we don't want anything too serious at that time in the morning. I'd much rather hear her talk about 'wee Angus' (her little doggy) than hear serious journalists harping on about current events.

It's great that there is such a good choice of different morning TV programmes. I can remember when there were only 3 channels and BBC2 was mostly the testcard!

Graphista · 21/03/2018 15:31

Her reporting on dunblane was good.

I used to like watching her years ago, she's not a stupid woman and definitely knows where the bodies are buried I think as she has huge negotiating power. Staying on "breakfast tv" through the various companies producing (where others were unceremoniously dumped) in much the same role and I think I read she does a 3 day week now?

But some articles she wrote were very right wing and then the sycophancy and support she's given to a certain couple who are parents to a missing child put me right off!

I won't watch or read her now.

HRTpatch · 21/03/2018 15:37

blanche is spot on.

SometimesMaybe · 21/03/2018 15:42

I don’t watch her as it’s not my cup of tea but for fucks sake, she is a woman who has held a prime morning slot for numerous years (decades?) in the face of what we know is a very sexist industry.

Maybe she wanted to get a “serious”gig but couldn’t as Kirsty Wark had serious and Scottish covered? Maybe she’s quite happy talking about skirts and celebs?

You don’t have to like her but at least appreciate that she has been successful.

trickyboots · 21/03/2018 15:49

I'm sure I remember her in Scotland today. She must be clever- she's survived well in a cut throat industry. I wonder if the golden handcuffs limit her doing something different. Yeah I'd like to see her do something different and less fawning. That said- I like her- just not the tv shows

Roussette · 21/03/2018 15:51

I certainly appreciate she's been successful, just not sure why! Watching her is like groundhog day, she just seems to say the same sort of things over and over again. I s'pose it's OK if you're half asleep in the morning

The80sweregreat · 21/03/2018 15:57

Most morning TV is pretty terrible to be fair. i remember when it all started and the channels were copying the American's - my parents refused to put the TV on! I cant stand all the adverts and the celebs just on there to promote things. The one show is the same though, thats had its day too.

Graphista · 21/03/2018 16:02

Personally I'd say This mornings had its day too - there just isn't a decent alternative.

I also get fed up seeing the same presenters on numerous shows because they've negotiated a golden handcuffs deal - nobody heard of over exposure? (Look at you phil schofield)

I'd like to see new talent being given a chance

The80sweregreat · 21/03/2018 16:06

LK does do shows on the BBC though, so she must have a flexible agreement? not sure how that works.

i do not like Phil or Holly at all, personal preference but those two are on everything and they are both really smug. i agree, new talent is needed, its the same old faces time and time again.

ssd · 21/03/2018 16:09

she was great reporting on Dunblane, same as Kirsty Young was great reporting 9/11

but that's the thing, Kirsty Young is still seen as a serious presenter, LT seems to have merged into a fluffy type only interested in what shoes to wear with what dress. I'm sure there's so much more to her than that, I see her as a sort of Esther Rantzen, That's Life, type in a few years, but the way she's going with her morning programme no one will ever take her seriously and what's worse is she seems to really enjoy being so fluffy, either that or shes a great actress
