What shall I do about this holiday?

Not AIBU but need speedy reply with advice.

Ds (5) was sick on Monday in the night (now Wednesday here in Uk), lots of sick. Kept him off school yesterday and had a sofa day. He was fine in himself mostly. Up and down. Lying down sometimes but also jumping around. Saying his heart was hurting. No other symptoms except being sick.

Wasn't sure what to give him food wise. He had toast with butter for b fast and no lunch. Bacon sandwich for dinner with bread and butter. Dh thinks silly to give this. Was a bacon sandwich wrong?

Anyway, ds sick again last night, tiny amount of sick. Then a further three times with just water and bile. Again no other symptoms.

The problem is we are going on a long haul holiday tomorrow morning. We are meant to get up at 5 am, drive for two hours to the airport, then do 7 hour flight! We don't know if we should cancel holiday or still go. We would loose the total price of the holiday to cancel £6,500. Or £200 per person to try and change dates on it with hotel provider. The flights look like they are non- transferable and we would loose the cost automatically. We don't have travel insurance.

Dh wants to go and reckons its just a stomach bug. He reckons if we stave ds today and on the flight it will be ok. Reckons its a 24 hour bug.

I am reluctant as worried he will be sick again in the night. Worried about having strange food in a hot place will just make him sick again and he will just want to rest all holiday. Think the holiday will be ruined with moany ds. Don't want to risk taking him on long flight if he's ill, could be a nightmare. But we stand to loose £6,500 if we don't.

I’m really confused by this thread, 17 pages talking about insurance yet a insurance fraud investigator pointed out on page 3 that insurance wouldn’t cover you for a tummy bug- which makes perfect sense. Also who on earth thinks “pre existing condition” refers to something transient and temporary like a cough cold or tummy bug?? Shock

Mydietstartstomorrow · 22/03/2018 22:46

Cannot actually believe the amount of selfish arseholes that actually would do this! Thanks to people like them the first half of my honeymoon was ruined by this kind of selfish attitude when a man started vomiting just as the flight took off, sat next to my son. Following night he was up throwing his guts up, continuing for the next few days and not himself for a good week or so, and dh and I also decidedly shady. Hope your enjoying your holiday OP. Hope you don’t Get I’ll on holiday, karmas a bitch 🤞

Mydietstartstomorrow · 22/03/2018 22:47

*get ill ffs

piccolamammaagain · 22/03/2018 22:58

Depending on how old the kids are 7 hours is not that bad. We did 12 hour flights age 11 no problem. I’d just take Capol & a sick bag. Unlikely still to be chundering after x4 days. The insurance thing - are you covered by existing medical insurance while overseas? Might be worth checking policies. Good luck! 👍🏽

Justanormalmummy · 23/03/2018 07:27

I would maybe take him to your GP, if he's been sick after eating and complaining of chest pain then he may have reflux. My 10 year old was diagnosed with reflux and had the same symptoms, she never had it as a baby. With regards to the travel insurance, if you pay for your bank account then you may well already have it. So it's worth checking!

Esspee · 23/03/2018 07:37

@TittyGolightly. Loved your definition of alternative medicine. It makes me want to scream every time I read of someone recommending so called alternative medicine. If it does work it is due to the placebo effect.

PremierNaps · 23/03/2018 08:01

@TittyGolightly I was going to post that! Grin good old Tim Minchin

Odoreida · 23/03/2018 08:41

I'm sad to live in a world where someone who has £6500 to spunk on their spring holiday is also someone of zero judgement and planning ability (to say nothing of their moral bankruptcy). To have that kind of disposable income I guess that at least one of the couple must have a really responsible job. A bacon sandwich for a sick child???? If you don't know what food to give a child recovering from sickness (and I didn't when I first had a baby, so I decided to learn, in case I needed this information) then you look it up. And WTF insurance.

mogonfoxnight · 23/03/2018 09:00

titty espee premier it depends on the definition of "alternative" and the definition of "medicine". Presumably you would agree that stress levels affect the immune system, and that emotional stress can cause muscles to tighten which then affects the body. Reflexology, cranial osteopathy, acupuncture all help. Many would argue with you about the positive affect of acupuncture and reflexology on fertility is merely placebo. Eastern medicine generally is often referred to as "alternative" and you surely can't write the whole lot off. Not really sure about homeopathic medicine though. I was watching a thing with a leading psychiatrist talking about "alternative" ways of dealing with certain things, instead of drugs, and he was saying "no idea how they work, but they do seem to... "

Not point of thread though, obviously.

mogonfoxnight · 23/03/2018 09:01

that would be "being merely placebo"

Noextremes2017 · 23/03/2018 09:26

Odoreida - spot on.

A morally bankrupt poster with too much money and no common sense.

IAmMatty · 23/03/2018 09:38

Odoreida - that's a tad dramatic, don't you think? You're sad to live in a world where the OP exists too?

Get a grip Hmm

jocarter67 · 23/03/2018 09:42

Just wanted to add my 5p’s worth. I’m sure OP has gone on her holiday probably without spending around £20 for insurance for the whole family, I’m another one who seriously can’t believe she and other people go abroad ANYWHERE without insurance it’s complete madness. Everyone can Be perfectly fit and well, but anything can happen, children especially fall and need medical help. Sorry finished now, but it never fails to amaze me.

YABU - Imo you should take DC to the doctor, not a foreign country, especially without holiday insurance!
Being a Mum first and a travel agent, I can't believe you haven't got insurance-it's the first thing you should do (and I don't sell insurance) Angry
You then possibly wouldn't be asking if you should go as you know you could claim back your holiday cost Blush
Sorry if this is harsh but hopefully you'll think twice next time you book a holiday Sad

CottonSock · 23/03/2018 10:39

Penguins that is really unfair I think

MsGameandWatching · 23/03/2018 10:54

Why have you posted that Penguins?

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 23/03/2018 10:57

BUT THE INSURANCE WOULDNT PAY OUT ANYWAY

PushMyButton · 23/03/2018 11:21

I guess they must've travelled by the lack of replies...

PrimalLass · 23/03/2018 11:31

DS came out in chickenpox when we were in the Middle East. He would have been infectious on the plane but at that point had no chickenpox. These things happen.

Iseveryusernametaken · 23/03/2018 11:38

Personally I would take the hit and change to a different date. If it isn't a bug and he's ill abroad, it could be very traumatic for all of you. It would also be very unfair to circulate a virus (if it is just a virus) to the rest of the passengers. If he's sick at the airport and the airline realise, they probably won't let you fly anyway. You have insurance now and yes, you'll lose some money, but this could be a potential disaster rather than a holiday. If you do have to seek medical attention abroad, are you going to lie about him being ill previously or tell the truth and potentially invalidate your insurance?

bustoschool · 23/03/2018 13:08

I don't think she gives a hoot tbh and won't be replying any time soon!

Papergirl1968 · 23/03/2018 13:10

It’s on the Daily Mail online, predictably.
Sorry, don’t know how to link...

sonjadog · 23/03/2018 13:24

Really? Must be a slow day. "People with child who is not feeling well go on holiday" is hardly a newsworthy event.

Queenio24 · 23/03/2018 13:42

Yes I've seen it in the mail too.
Thankfully I've been too sweary to be quoted I think Grin.
I don't think the op will come back, although I m sure the op went, taking her her poorly son to spread his vomiting bug around the whole plane.
