What shall I do about this holiday?

Not AIBU but need speedy reply with advice.

Ds (5) was sick on Monday in the night (now Wednesday here in Uk), lots of sick. Kept him off school yesterday and had a sofa day. He was fine in himself mostly. Up and down. Lying down sometimes but also jumping around. Saying his heart was hurting. No other symptoms except being sick.

Wasn't sure what to give him food wise. He had toast with butter for b fast and no lunch. Bacon sandwich for dinner with bread and butter. Dh thinks silly to give this. Was a bacon sandwich wrong?

Anyway, ds sick again last night, tiny amount of sick. Then a further three times with just water and bile. Again no other symptoms.

The problem is we are going on a long haul holiday tomorrow morning. We are meant to get up at 5 am, drive for two hours to the airport, then do 7 hour flight! We don't know if we should cancel holiday or still go. We would loose the total price of the holiday to cancel £6,500. Or £200 per person to try and change dates on it with hotel provider. The flights look like they are non- transferable and we would loose the cost automatically. We don't have travel insurance.

Dh wants to go and reckons its just a stomach bug. He reckons if we stave ds today and on the flight it will be ok. Reckons its a 24 hour bug.

I am reluctant as worried he will be sick again in the night. Worried about having strange food in a hot place will just make him sick again and he will just want to rest all holiday. Think the holiday will be ruined with moany ds. Don't want to risk taking him on long flight if he's ill, could be a nightmare. But we stand to loose £6,500 if we don't.

He told you his heart hurts, get it checked out now - this can be a symptom of something more serious than a stomach bug. Results of this will decide for you as to what you need to do about the holiday. Really hoping all is well

headintheproverbial · 22/03/2018 17:59

I would go. 100-%

kennycat · 22/03/2018 18:01

Erm, have you not thought about infection control?!

You wouldn’t send a child to school for 48 hours after last vomiting episode to prevent spreading it. There’s no way you should be putting him on a plane knowing full well he has some kind of bug.

Sorry to be harsh but it’s true.

Branleuse · 22/03/2018 18:03

I would 100% go too for a 6.5k holiday

nursy1 · 22/03/2018 18:04

Yes you should have taken out insurance. I’m assuming it’s outside EU? With some countries we have a reciprocal healthcare agreement like Australia I believe but you still need insurance.
Go online and book something now.
Also go to pharmacy. I know under 12s can’t take loperamide but there may be something that will ge5 him through flight.

TittyGolightly · 22/03/2018 18:05

although I risk it for EU countries (though will have to reconsider that after next March)

Dangerous strategy.

shesakeeper · 22/03/2018 18:06

Currently awaiting BBC news report about quarantined plane full of vomiting holidaymakers being held on the tarmac in Dubai...

Greenglassteacup · 22/03/2018 18:06

The OP and her family will be in a Dubai by now, with their last minute health insurance
( for all of the people who haven’t RTFT Grin)

mogonfoxnight · 22/03/2018 18:08

The bit I wasn't sure about was the heart hurting unless I missed an update. I would see a doctor tonight or tomorrow if time. If not time, I'd phone NHS helpline thing and talk it through. Thought it might be acid or something but another poster thought it might be something else. Check if his throat is hurting.

My dc bugs are usually just 48 hours but one turned into a 2 week thing (to do with a throat infection) which was horrendous so worth talking to someone I think. It won't destroy your plans (unless there is a problem in which case you'd rather know).

The hotels in dubai would be able to help with finding docs over there if needed I would imagine.

Greenglassteacup · 22/03/2018 18:13

I doubt op is checking this thread

mogonfoxnight · 22/03/2018 18:13

oh yup, just realised they will be there now... doh.

Redzinfandel · 22/03/2018 18:23

Won't preach on the insurance! When my dc's were sick like that as littlies I was told to keep fluids up and full fat no colour fizzy drinks that have been left to go flat are great as they have salt and sugar in them that replenishes the body quickly and gives energy. Then just give plain food like rice and dry toast or chicken soup. Apples are good too. Avoid processed foods at all costs! If there's no temperature or stomach pain it is probably just a bug. Of course worst case scenario is a grumbling appendix .......... Guess you take a chance!

Shockers · 22/03/2018 18:24

Check your bank account- some have travel insurance included (DH’s does).

But I’d be tempted to go.

exWifebeginsat40 · 22/03/2018 18:25

i have spent time on cruise ships filled with shitting, vomiting pensioners and never got sick. the crew rarely get sick. because hygiene. anyone, anywhere could be and probably is carrying all sorts of revolting nonsense on their sticky, virulent hands. YOU CAN AVOID CERTAIN DEATH BY GERM.

wash your hands, use antibac and if you are the boy in the bubble you should call ahead to check the plane can accommodate your iron lung or whatever.

always get travel insurance though. that was a big old bollock to drop.

Greenglassteacup · 22/03/2018 18:25
Confused
Greenglassteacup · 22/03/2018 18:26

Posted too soon. They have insurance now.

Greenglassteacup · 22/03/2018 18:26

By the skin of their teeth

Shockers · 22/03/2018 18:26

Ah- ignore me; I’m in bed with a stomach bug, so felt entitled to answer without reading the full thread Wink.

ALittleBitofEverything111 · 22/03/2018 18:52

Many years ago my brother needed his appendix removed on holiday in Italy. My Dad had not got insurance. It cost them an absolute fortune. We always get insurance now.

ceeveebee · 22/03/2018 18:53

Hope you are having a great time op!

KERALA1 · 22/03/2018 18:55

When I got our insurance for the states the lady said some of their pay outs are the value of a small house Shock. I am paranoid about travel insurance. If you can't afford the insurance you can't afford the trip.

jayne1976 · 22/03/2018 18:56

Don’t need 356 people telling you with shocked faces, you messed up - look for a year round policy if you fly a bit can be as cheap as a one off.
Get up and assess - so much money to loose!

Sunnyshores · 22/03/2018 18:57

sorry havent read all the thread - are you sure you dont have travel insurance included with your bank account? I do with Nationwide, partner does with NatWest (not deliberately, it came with other benefits we did want).

smilingontheinside · 22/03/2018 19:15

NRTWT am I alone when reading the op that I'd go and leave sick child with responsible adult BlushGrin

Viperama · 22/03/2018 19:18

Bacon sandwich on a recovering upset tummy is not a good idea at all, meat is a challenge to digest. Not RTFT but for next time momma follow BRAT for upset stomachs, bananas, rice, apples, toast for at least 48 hrs
