What shall I do about this holiday?

Not AIBU but need speedy reply with advice.

Ds (5) was sick on Monday in the night (now Wednesday here in Uk), lots of sick. Kept him off school yesterday and had a sofa day. He was fine in himself mostly. Up and down. Lying down sometimes but also jumping around. Saying his heart was hurting. No other symptoms except being sick.

Wasn't sure what to give him food wise. He had toast with butter for b fast and no lunch. Bacon sandwich for dinner with bread and butter. Dh thinks silly to give this. Was a bacon sandwich wrong?

Anyway, ds sick again last night, tiny amount of sick. Then a further three times with just water and bile. Again no other symptoms.

The problem is we are going on a long haul holiday tomorrow morning. We are meant to get up at 5 am, drive for two hours to the airport, then do 7 hour flight! We don't know if we should cancel holiday or still go. We would loose the total price of the holiday to cancel £6,500. Or £200 per person to try and change dates on it with hotel provider. The flights look like they are non- transferable and we would loose the cost automatically. We don't have travel insurance.

Dh wants to go and reckons its just a stomach bug. He reckons if we stave ds today and on the flight it will be ok. Reckons its a 24 hour bug.

I am reluctant as worried he will be sick again in the night. Worried about having strange food in a hot place will just make him sick again and he will just want to rest all holiday. Think the holiday will be ruined with moany ds. Don't want to risk taking him on long flight if he's ill, could be a nightmare. But we stand to loose £6,500 if we don't.

We’ve been in this situation (we had insurance but I do t think it effected our decision). The healthy members of the group went ahead and my sick kid and I waited a couple of days and followed on. It’s a bit dramatic for the OP to say they will lose £6500 if they don’t go. It will cost them a bit for two of the party to wait a day but it won’t be much. I suspect the boy will be fine and I don’t think it sounds too serious. but I would be really worried about him being sick on the plane and whether there would be any people who are have health issues on the plane. It is extremely selfish for people not to care about other passengers.

If I was the OP I would have gone to the GPS and asked their opinion.

ScouseAT · 22/03/2018 19:26

I would go, it’s a bug, he’ll be fine. Take your holiday insurance out online now to cover you if any medical treatment is needed while you’re away.

viques · 22/03/2018 19:27

No insurance ? So were you planning doing a crowd funding appeal if you got sick/injured on your holiday and needed medical treatment/hospital admission or repatriation on a medical flight? Hope you had some winsome sad face pictures ready.

turnipfarmers · 22/03/2018 19:31

Go but for goodness sake take out travel insurance immediately.

PrizeOik · 22/03/2018 19:42

I'm way more horrified by the bacon sandwich after vomiting, then the admission that you thought sugary things were bad after D&V?? than the insurance.

High fat foods generally make healthy people uncomfortable and often pukey, giving a child with D&V a bacon sandwich sounds like you're torturing them tbh. Have you never been ill?

Also a vomiting child complaining of heart pain should be taken to hospital ffs.

Nowt as queer as folk

Mmmmmmmchips · 22/03/2018 19:56

I’ll get the obvious out of the way

  1. You spent over £6500 and didn’t get the insurance?
What if something happened whilst you were there? What if your luggage went awol? What if your flights got delayed or cancelled Confused
  1. If you knew you were going on holiday in a few days and considering his symptoms why did you not go to the GP’s AND take out insurance then?
  2. Why did you give him a bacon sandwich? Hmm
  3. If it isn’t a 24 hour stomach bug have you thought about what you’re going to do when you’re there? Not just your son but all of you? Firstly you’ll have to find your nearest Dr/hospital and you will be responsible for the travel up and down to the hospital, Drs charges, hospital charges and all meds.

Where are you going BTW?

Mmmmmmmchips · 22/03/2018 19:58

Sorry didn’t finish

You also haven’t considered the other passengers which is V selfish and quite frankly your son.
Would you want to be on a flight if you were feeling sick?

Penygirl · 22/03/2018 19:59

Presumably they have gone??

BraayTigger · 22/03/2018 20:13

Check ur bank doesn’t provide travel insurance with whichever account you have.

user1510568216 · 22/03/2018 20:19

Hope your DS is feeling better & you all have a fantastic holiday.

FlakyToast · 22/03/2018 20:31

That’s karma right there. Why the fuck would you go anywhere without travel insurance?!

Confused I don't think that's what karma means.

mumof3boys33 · 22/03/2018 20:31

I would say you are a bit selfish if you’ve gone on the flight. Your son will be contagious for up to 72 hours. If one of you is coming down with the same bug you will also be highly contagious. A cold is different. A sickness bug will ruin people’s holidays.

Lacucuracha · 22/03/2018 20:52

I hope OP is having a wonderful time, much to the consternation of the sourpusses on here.

ittakes2 · 22/03/2018 20:56

Go to Boots or buy on Amazon Nelson’s arsen alba - it’s a homeopathic medicine which from my experience stops these things almost immediately - usually within hours or same day.
We once were on a plane with child with stomach bug - completedly ruined our holiday as our 3 year old twins were vomitting for four days.

TittyGolightly · 22/03/2018 20:57

it’s a homeopathic medicine

No such thing.

TittyGolightly · 22/03/2018 21:02

.

What shall I do about this holiday?
Rachie1986 · 22/03/2018 21:11

OP what happened?

Feelings · 22/03/2018 21:11

If she's not responding then she's probably on the flight.

Teacher22 · 22/03/2018 21:15

Reschedule. You will lose some money but not six grand. You cannot get last minute insurance if a child is already sick and they would not pay out if you lied.

The scenarios where the child continues to be ill or gets worse with travelling or where you, his parents, catch the bug, are too awful to contemplate. Not to mention that paying for medical help overseas is very expensive.

Just reschedule as soon as you can. If you cannot, don’t go.

Sorry to be a doom monger but, to an extent, the worst scenario is playing out now and you need to manage it and reduce the ill effects.

Blahdeblah123 · 22/03/2018 21:20

I don't often post, but this has got me riled.
How utterly stupidity to have travel insurance. God forbid anything were to happen, no doubt you'd be in the Daily Mail with a sad faced picture and a just giving page.
And how utterly selfish to even think of going on a long haul flight with a vomiting child. You are jeopardizing everyone else's holidays, people who have very probably saved long and hard for a well needed holiday. Shame on you.

sonjadog · 22/03/2018 21:26

So riled that you couldn't be bothered reading the whole thread apparently. The OP bought travel insurance.

Greenglassteacup · 22/03/2018 21:37

Nobody on the last fuck knows how many pages has read the thread Grin

TalkinBoutWhat · 22/03/2018 22:03

Yes but you could at least read all of the OP's posts! It's easy enough to have them all come up in a different colour.

Lozz22 · 22/03/2018 22:07

I never thought I would need to claim back of my travel insurance but I did about 6 years ago!! $150 for the Privilege of having a bad case of tonsillitis on a cruise ship in the middle of the Caribbean! Something that would have cost me £8 back at home for some antibiotics! Travel insurance paid out £47 doesn’t seem like much but it’s better than nothing. It’s also better to be safer rather than sorry with things like this!! Try the BRAT diet. Banana, rice, applesauce (plain) and toast (dry

Blahdeblah123 · 22/03/2018 22:18

Sonjadog. I did read the whole post. She only got travel insurance in the hope she might be able to claim due to this situation....
