What shall I do about this holiday?

Not AIBU but need speedy reply with advice.

Ds (5) was sick on Monday in the night (now Wednesday here in Uk), lots of sick. Kept him off school yesterday and had a sofa day. He was fine in himself mostly. Up and down. Lying down sometimes but also jumping around. Saying his heart was hurting. No other symptoms except being sick.

Wasn't sure what to give him food wise. He had toast with butter for b fast and no lunch. Bacon sandwich for dinner with bread and butter. Dh thinks silly to give this. Was a bacon sandwich wrong?

Anyway, ds sick again last night, tiny amount of sick. Then a further three times with just water and bile. Again no other symptoms.

The problem is we are going on a long haul holiday tomorrow morning. We are meant to get up at 5 am, drive for two hours to the airport, then do 7 hour flight! We don't know if we should cancel holiday or still go. We would loose the total price of the holiday to cancel £6,500. Or £200 per person to try and change dates on it with hotel provider. The flights look like they are non- transferable and we would loose the cost automatically. We don't have travel insurance.

Dh wants to go and reckons its just a stomach bug. He reckons if we stave ds today and on the flight it will be ok. Reckons its a 24 hour bug.

I am reluctant as worried he will be sick again in the night. Worried about having strange food in a hot place will just make him sick again and he will just want to rest all holiday. Think the holiday will be ruined with moany ds. Don't want to risk taking him on long flight if he's ill, could be a nightmare. But we stand to loose £6,500 if we don't.

You said he'd been bringing up Bile since and you didn't Class that as actual sick.

I personally wouldn't class any of this as a 'mistake'

Presuming 2 adults at least travelling with their family one of them may actually think of TI

thisisme2018 · 21/03/2018 16:50

Why don't you call the airline and ask them their policy?
I'm pretty sure you know what their answer will be already...

1981m · 21/03/2018 16:51

She sake keeper- thanks for the input. When I first posted I was unsure and wanted to know what others would do. I was saying we shouldn't go and dh was saying we should. Just wanted some opinions that's all. Nothing sinister or needing anything validating.

Honestly 1981 - there are some right nutjobs on here. I think some people just love to take the moral high ground over ANYTHING. From what you say, I am sure he will be fine. Stop reading this thread, go and pack, and have a really lovely time. As for taking someone with a basic vomiting bug to the GP, words fail me Grin Ok, there might be special circumstances where one might, but not for this!

TittyGolightly · 21/03/2018 16:55

Given where you’re going.......

“May the fleas of a thousand camels inhabit your arsehole.”

NerrSnerr · 21/03/2018 16:56

Anyway, ds sick again last night, tiny amount of sick. Then a further three times with just water and bile. Again no other symptoms

He was sick more than 3 times- you'd already said there was lots of sick on Monday night and then he was sick 4 times last night!

SquirrelsareUs · 21/03/2018 16:58

@PuppyMonkey Wed 21-Mar-18 16:48:51

I wouldn’t give bananas to someone who’s been sick, I Find fruit too hard on the tummy tbh.

Actually, bananas are the one fruit that is recommended in the case of a stomach upset, once you feel like eating again - I know as a family member was seriously ill with gastric problems for several months and practically lived on bananas. So if he wants some banana then it's safe to give it to him.... but probably (like everything) in small doses at first.

0nemorenight · 21/03/2018 17:01

You are going abroad with no travel insurance ? madness

Dipitydoda · 21/03/2018 17:03

Not quite sure what you were looking for people to say the majority have told you you should stay at home and potentially follow later. You have told everyone they are overreacting you are going! Really what was the point unless you were looking for advice on how to get your money back with no insurance

Glumglowworm · 21/03/2018 17:07

How on earth can you know if he’s contagious?!? The stupidity here is beyond belief!

Given the symptoms and that there’s no obvious innocent cause of sickness such as travel sickness, you have to assume it’s a bug. It sounds exactly like a bug. But you selfishly want your holiday that you stupidly didn’t get travel insurance for so you’re convincing yourself it’s not

Honestly, so stupid, selfish and irresponsible.

shesakeeper · 21/03/2018 17:09

Of course it's a bug. OP knows this, we all know it. The general consensus here is that they shouldn't go. But they will go anyway.

Lovemusic33 · 21/03/2018 17:11

Op, just stop posting here, if he hasn’t been sick since 2am and makes it through the night without being sick then I’m sure it will be fine. Your right that it was probably the fact you gave him a bacon sandwich which agrivated his tummy whilst he was recovering.

I’m sure if others were in this situation (though maybe they are not silly enough not to take out insurance) they would fly too.

madeyemoodysmum · 21/03/2018 17:15

Why no insurance. Dumbest thing I've read in mumsnet.

EVERYONE that travels should get travel insurance on a yearly policy. Then your covered for all of these issues.

Ifonlyus · 21/03/2018 17:20

Someone above mentioned their 2 DSs being very different when they had a vomiting bug. Same thing in my household. DD1 was rarely sick anyway and always got it over with in a shorter space of time. DD2 would be sick, seem brights as anything for a day, then be sick again, then seem like she'd recovered and two days later be sick again. So, it is hard to say if your DS is over the worst or not really harbouring a bug because he seems well.

I've fortunately not been in this position to know what exactly I would do. Has he been ill before like this? Do you know what's typical for him? Has anything being going around at school? Could your DD end up being ill with it whilst you are away?

I'm still baffled why you didn't have travel insurance. I know this has been said so many times. Do families commonly not bother with it? Perhaps traveling to Europe isn't too risky but a 7 hour flight doesn't take you to anywhere you'd want to be in hospital, have an accident or get attacked in without insurance. I buy it to cover me when I am away - it's just a bonus that I could use it if I had to cancel a trip for circumstances out of my control.

CrushedCornflakes · 21/03/2018 17:20

I am not selfish
As someone that has been severely immune compromised, yes you are, and a massive arsehole if you go on that flight and risk spreading it to others.

Fintress · 21/03/2018 17:25

We don't have travel insurance.

Insane to spend so much on a holiday when travel insurance is peanuts in comparison. You are too late to buy it now! All very well to say you've never needed it in the past. Never have we until our last holiday a few months ago and thank god we did have it.

RJnomore1 · 21/03/2018 17:30

I know it's been done to death but no insurance! Ffs what if you hurt yourself or get run over?

I cannot believe it.

sonjadog · 21/03/2018 17:31

They have bought it. They have travel insurance.

Even if people can't be bothered reading everything, they could at least read the OP´s posts before posting.

onemorecakeplease · 21/03/2018 17:36

See how he is - if no more sick then go.

Get travel insurance now though. In case anything else happens - my friend is stuck in New York for 2 weeks as her son got chicken pox while they were there and they can’t fly home til doc sign him fit.

Verrrrry expensive if she hadn’t had travel insurance.

inamechangedforthispost · 21/03/2018 17:38

You don't know what bug your child has got. You are taking him on a plane full of people, one that will be recirculating air, for 7 hours.

You must have read how easy it is to infect people on cruise ships and planes?

I know you're going to go anyway but it is irresponsible, it's one thing to fly when you don't know you're ill, but quite another when you know you are.

Your travel insurance will likely be invalid should you need it for your child anyway (unless you have declared it). Considering you have been honest with his school, any claim could be seen as fraudulent, insurance companies do a lot of checking nowadays.

I hope he is better soon and I do understand your dilemma, but I think your mistake could prove costly for other people who have the misfortune to be on the same flight as you.

I would cry for weeks if I lost that much money, but I honestly don't think I could go.

ImNotAFlower · 21/03/2018 17:39

Just a question.... what kind of bug is it you think he has that isn't contagious?
The only thing that isn't contagious is food poisoning.

I often wonder what I would do in this situation, a very close friend has a child who ends up in hospital if he catches a sickness bug, so I think I am swayed in that I would never put another persons child in jeopardy like he can be.

Ultimately it is your choice. If you do go I hope it all runs smoothly and you enjoy yourselves.

Oh and incase you hadn't heard it's best to get travel insurance when you book 😉

1981m · 21/03/2018 17:40

I think it's been 50/50 go, don't go,actually. I figure he's not contagious as me, dh and dd don't have it.

Thanks for the kind posts, I realise I've been stupid not getting TI. Enough said.

We ve packed will see how he is in the morning. I wish people would read the bloody posts. I said he's been sick once Monday, twice last night. Total of three times. Lots of sick Monday meant the quantity not the frequency.

Riff- thanks for your post. You're right.

LIZS · 21/03/2018 17:41

I'd put money on the younger dc going down with it. As a matter of interest did you take him to the shop with you, or ask the pharmacist for advice while there?

RJnomore1 · 21/03/2018 17:42

TRAVEL insurance now yep.

Horse, stable door, bolt.

RJnomore1 · 21/03/2018 17:43

No you didn't. You said he was sick four times last night.

It's right there.
