What shall I do about this holiday?

Not AIBU but need speedy reply with advice.

Ds (5) was sick on Monday in the night (now Wednesday here in Uk), lots of sick. Kept him off school yesterday and had a sofa day. He was fine in himself mostly. Up and down. Lying down sometimes but also jumping around. Saying his heart was hurting. No other symptoms except being sick.

Wasn't sure what to give him food wise. He had toast with butter for b fast and no lunch. Bacon sandwich for dinner with bread and butter. Dh thinks silly to give this. Was a bacon sandwich wrong?

Anyway, ds sick again last night, tiny amount of sick. Then a further three times with just water and bile. Again no other symptoms.

The problem is we are going on a long haul holiday tomorrow morning. We are meant to get up at 5 am, drive for two hours to the airport, then do 7 hour flight! We don't know if we should cancel holiday or still go. We would loose the total price of the holiday to cancel £6,500. Or £200 per person to try and change dates on it with hotel provider. The flights look like they are non- transferable and we would loose the cost automatically. We don't have travel insurance.

Dh wants to go and reckons its just a stomach bug. He reckons if we stave ds today and on the flight it will be ok. Reckons its a 24 hour bug.

I am reluctant as worried he will be sick again in the night. Worried about having strange food in a hot place will just make him sick again and he will just want to rest all holiday. Think the holiday will be ruined with moany ds. Don't want to risk taking him on long flight if he's ill, could be a nightmare. But we stand to loose £6,500 if we don't.

OP - just make sure you give him the electrolytes over the next few days and that he drinks enough water. Sickness, long-haul flights and a hot climate will all contribute to dehydration.

Greatestshowlady · 21/03/2018 17:46

He'll be fine enjoy your holiday!!

Jux · 21/03/2018 17:46

Presumably they have doctors in Dubai so if he's still ill, or if either of you two fall ill, you'll be treated.

If he has an actual fever, then it would be responsible to change the dates.

MrsLupo · 21/03/2018 17:51

I figure he's not contagious as me, dh and dd don't have it.

Unless it has a minuscule incubation period, you won't though, will you? Unless you can think of something bad he ate on Sunday/Monday, it's almost certainly a bug you will all go down with while you're away. The alternative is something worse, e.g appendicitis. Why risk it? Postpone. Whatever you do, don't come back here and post about your nightmare vommy holiday this time next week!

PixieDust100 · 21/03/2018 17:52

I would go if I was in your shoes, not going to pretend I wouldn’t!
Have a fab holiday.

HeedMove · 21/03/2018 17:57

I would go 100% if he wasn’t sick again now.

CookieDoughKid · 21/03/2018 18:04

My dad had a stroke in China and had no travel insurance. My family had to cough up £20,000 wire transfer to get him repatriated home. And the doctors in China refused to operate until they received evidence of a wire transfer . he only made it home because of a family friend in HongKong put up the money for us. The 12 hour delay in operating means my dad is now crippled for life. Just saying its a very real problem not having travel insurance.

sarcasmisnotthelowestformofwit · 21/03/2018 18:05

My DS has norivirus last week. Lasted 24 hours. No one else got it (and he slept in my bed). Doc advised flat coke or Fanta (full fat) to replace liquid and sugars, and salty snacks. He recovered miraculously after that.

Schools say 48 hours before they can go back to be risk free re contagion. So yes YWBU to fly tomorrow. Change your flights to the next day and suck up the cost.

Queenio24 · 21/03/2018 18:10

So fucking selfish.
When you go take a good look at all those poor people on the plane you are potentially infecting at the start of their holidays.

LexieLulu · 21/03/2018 18:12

I'd 100% go.

He doesn't sound that sick and £6500 is a lot to loose.

Ask your DS what he wants to do? I'm sure his response will tell you how poorly he is

1981m · 21/03/2018 18:23

Lexie- ds wants a bacon sandwich and wants to come downstairs to jump on the sofa like yesterday. He's had bed rest, water, toast and bananas. He wants to go to holiday.

I wouldn't be surprised if we re not the only ones on that flight who have had some kind of bug in the last 48 hours.

It's easy for people to say it's selfish etc and take the moral high ground but when faced with our dilemma I wonder if they really would not go and throw that kind of money away. Even with travel insurance cancelling that close to departure might not get you all your money back.

Cookie- Christ. Hope he's ok. Never will we not get travel insurance again. How terrible. Lesson 100% learnt. At least we re covered for our next holidays.

There's some absolute twats on here lately.

OP I'm sure DS is fine and will be fine, go and enjoy Dubai, the kids will love it, loads to do for them.

Although I'm surprised you've haven't had it in the neck for daring to go to such a chavvy slave ridden country Grin

TittyGolightly · 21/03/2018 18:29

I can honestly say it wouldn’t matter what the holiday had cost if one of us could potentially endanger the life of someone else by going.

Frazzled2207 · 21/03/2018 18:30

I have kids the same age. If no more sickness I would go, I hope you manage to go and have a good time. Hopefully your ds will have a rest on the plane and have a good time too.

notallowedanopinion · 21/03/2018 18:35

Everyone mentioning having "norovirus" not every stomach bug is norovirus. Norovirus is a particularly horrific one yes but its not the only one!

Odiepants · 21/03/2018 18:38

I can't believe so many people think its OK to travel so close after your DS being sick.

My DS had a sick bug a couple of years ago. I washed my hands like mad, antibaced etc and still went down with it 4 days after he was first sick. Exclusion periods for sickness and diarrhea are for a reason.

Yes it is a lot of money to lose but seriously if you couldn't cope with losing it then you should have got travel insurance. We had a similar priced holiday last year and the first thing I did after booking it was get travel insurance. It was expensive because of preexisting conditions, but I don't get how you could have paid for an expensive holiday and not thought about it.

littlebillie · 21/03/2018 18:43

Please buy annual at least you are covered for all your holidays including uk

celesti · 21/03/2018 18:47

I can't believe this is true. Nobody spends 6K on a holiday without travel insurance. And wanting to take a vomiting child on a plane...I don't buy it. Nobody is that stupid AND selfish surely

CherryMaDeary · 21/03/2018 18:48

Only in the world of Mumsnet would people forego a £6.5k holiday.

OP, if ds is feeling a better, you are right to go.

Blondienut · 21/03/2018 19:05

OP I am sorry for you having to read such ridiculous over the top replies. Go with your gut instinct, I'd bet money on it he'll be grand. It's not as if he's been constantly vomiting all week. I find flat 7up works a treat to rehydrate and settle tummy. Bring a couple of changes of clothes, wipes, plain snacks, calpol etc on flight. The amount of people that get on flights with coughs and colds and the amount of times you pick up something from travelling is sadly a fact of life. Hope you get to go and can enjoy your holiday

bustoschool · 21/03/2018 19:11

She's got the bloody insurance now ffs.

GabsAlot · 21/03/2018 19:11

i was sick on a plane to vegas once-was ablolutely fine right up until trip we worked out must have been airport food

i threw up about an hour into journey until we got there it was exhausting-they were apprently going to divert the plane because i wouldnt stop vomiting

didnt feel great for 2 days after either felt sorry for people on plane with me god knows what they thought

watch what he eats out there anything weird could start it off again and i woldnt let hm have plane food either

Jon66 · 21/03/2018 19:17

Just go, your child will probably be fine. I remember my 5 month old throwing up at the airport all over my husband. We went anyway and it was just a sickness, diarrhea thing which was fine by the 2nd week.

Pluckedpencil · 21/03/2018 19:19

Fuck it, just go. It's all very well people saying waste thousands of grand on a dream holiday when it's not theirs. Just go, he'll be reet.
