To want an alternative baby name

GreenieBeanie · 21/03/2018 02:27

DP and I are trying to come up with baby names (we're waiting to find out the sex), he is favouring names such as Leo and Leona, but I love the name Green for a boy or girl. He's trying to veto it but I'm sticking to my guns here, I love it! AIBU to want a pretty out there name for lo? Would I be setting them up for a life of hating their name?

All this judgement on a name.

I like it op - nice and different.

Loads of people have the mickey taken out of their names through the years - it can't be avoided.

I also like Ever Green Surname. [but then i'm a fan of colour charts too - always take some home with me... ]

And Joanie.

BlondeB83 · 22/03/2018 18:35

Green is an awful name for a forename, sorry!

cheval · 22/03/2018 18:57

I’m voting for Brian. No one called their child that last year. And what about Nigel? Again, nothing. Extinct.

Absofrigginlootly · 22/03/2018 19:01

Nigel just makes me follow it up in my head with Farrage. Just no.

I wonder if anyone uses the names, Kevin, Barry or Trevor anymore?? Same vein as Brian (Not my cup of tea if I'm honest)

I've always wondered what sort of person looks at a baby and says "ah, that's our little baby Trevor" Grin

Beetlebum101 · 22/03/2018 19:01

What about the singer from Scritti Politti whose name is Green.

Does this age me?

Absofrigginlootly · 22/03/2018 19:02

Or Kenneth?!

Always me think of the song "what's the frequency Kenneth?"

Fretfulparent · 22/03/2018 19:18

Elphaba?

wizzywig · 22/03/2018 19:22

If you like it you can always change your name to it.

gingermumi · 22/03/2018 19:23

My friend called his guinea pig green😊

afreshnewname · 22/03/2018 19:29

Opal or indigo for a girl, sage cobalt or teal for a boy

FancyNewBeesly · 22/03/2018 19:29

I know a woman called Chartreuse. Unfortunately that makes her nickname “Shart”. Poor woman.

I picked two very standard, boring names for my twins and I’m so glad I did - some of the names I hear out and about are hideous. Consider having to call their name across a crowded soft play before making a choice.

HmmGrey · 22/03/2018 19:47

I’ve heard Nova for a girl recently

Mummadeeze · 22/03/2018 19:49

If you like Gigi, why not go with that?! Or Giselle,Gisele or Gisela. Green is not really a great name - they will get teased.

Dangerousmonkey · 22/03/2018 19:54

Green. I do like it but a good chunk of people will just assume you and/ or DH need to get over a love of marijuana.

artyone · 22/03/2018 19:57

Erin, Reed, Jade, Angelica, Rosemary, Olive, Clover, Ivy.

Anything but Green, not as a first name anyway.

ktp100 · 22/03/2018 20:06

Just because you are a bit 'out there' doesn't meam your child will be. Imagine being a shy, retiring child lumbered with a name like Green! Can you not have it as a middle name and them use it as your preferred name at home? At least then the kud can choose not tp use ir if they're mortified.

ktp100 · 22/03/2018 20:07

FFS, apologies for my rushed post typed by podgy fingers between chores!

Whoknows1980 · 22/03/2018 20:21

Probably going to annoy people but.... I always say- a baby can get away with any name as can a toddler and pre schooler. First day of school and when the class learn about colours, your child would be laughed at. First day of secondary school teenagers are just going to be like wtf and your child will prob hate you at this stage. College, university they will probably have a nickname and use it ALWAYS! Serious job interview IF that’s what path they take then even the application may not be taken seriously and as for interview. Hello, my name is Green. Really- think of your child and it’s future; you want your child to love it’s name for the rest of its life. No wonder we have such a messed up society. Unbelievable

Cotswoldmama · 22/03/2018 20:28

Like others have said it makes me think of the Joni Mitchell song. It also reminds me of being put in colour groups for sports day at school and the rhyme we sang to taunt the green team was ‘green, green you’re a bogey machine’! I love unusual names my favourite for a girl is Velvet after the main character in the book national velvet. I’ve got two boys so haven’t been able to use it and we’re stopping at two! I think hubby would have vetoed it anyway x x x

PhuntSox · 22/03/2018 20:29

If everyone is choosing names like Tartan and Dragon and Unique then you need to make sure your child stands out!

I suggest Helen, Susan or Claire. She will be the only one in the class...

PhuntSox · 22/03/2018 20:30

Terry is also due a return.

Ellie56 · 22/03/2018 20:32

How about Leif?
It has elements of Leo in it, and leifs are green... Grin Grin

GinghamStyle · 22/03/2018 20:35

I have a friend whose mum calls him Bear. He has a real name, but she calls him Bear. He's skinny as a rake and in no way resembles a bear, but it's her pet name for him. Why not keep Green as a pet name for you to call your LO?

Cotswoldmama · 22/03/2018 20:39

Boys names from my list were Jesper, Jago, Nico, Winter, Otto, Evan, Evander, Auryn and Eben we went with Eben and middle name Jago. I think they’re unusual without being odd x x

BertieBotts · 22/03/2018 21:01

If you want a unique name, a good tip is to combine two names.

However, no matter how unique you think a name is, you will always come across more people with it once you've chosen it. You probably just never noticed them before.
