To want an alternative baby name

DP and I are trying to come up with baby names (we're waiting to find out the sex), he is favouring names such as Leo and Leona, but I love the name Green for a boy or girl. He's trying to veto it but I'm sticking to my guns here, I love it! AIBU to want a pretty out there name for lo? Would I be setting them up for a life of hating their name?

Ten to one she will end up Amelia or Eve

Skarossinkplunger · 22/03/2018 08:57

Am I the only thinking cannabis here?

GrannyGrissle · 22/03/2018 09:15

I was potting plants yesterday and thought green fingered. 'Nuff said.

FizzyGreenWater · 22/03/2018 09:25

Blue is fine- not just because it's more 'usually' used as a name, but because at least it sounds ok.

Green as a name is awful. Same sort of 'shape' as Geoff or Gerry for a boy, but with a nice whiny 'eeee' in the middle. Just no. For a girl, really harsh. And how about shortenings? Gree? Reen? Gee?

Be 'out there' by all means, but at least still choose pleasing sounds to name your baby with.

Never heard of cannabis called Green! And I have a teen 😬 Round here it's weed or bud...

thegreylady · 22/03/2018 09:54

I knew a girl named Forrest back in the seventies. I really like it.
I have heard cannabis referred to as ‘Green’ in Manchester in a book I just finished.

FizzyGreenWater · 22/03/2018 10:08

Forrest/Forest just reminds me of the pro-smoking campaign group Confused bleurgh!!!!!!!

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 22/03/2018 10:17

Green isn’t even a nice sounding word.

TheEgregiousPeach · 22/03/2018 10:30

GrannyGrissle green fingered Shock Grin
OP don't call them Green

liz70 · 22/03/2018 10:30

Forrest makes me think of Forrest Gump.
Green as a name just makes me think of the aforementioned Mr. Gartside. Although in his case it isn't his Christian name, that's the much more sensible Paul.

GreenieBeanie · 22/03/2018 12:05

I am liking the name Teal
I still don't hate Greene!

OP posts:
liz70 · 22/03/2018 12:25

As in Abney and Teal?

Nousernamefound · 22/03/2018 17:30

I love the colour green but as a name it is terrible. I think your child will want to change it when they’re older.

purplebunny2012 · 22/03/2018 17:31

Your child is a human being, not a pet or doll. They have to grow up with the name you give them for life.

VerbenaGirl · 22/03/2018 17:36

I don't mind an unusual name, but not totally sure about Green. It's growing on me the more I consider it! Better for a girl than a boy... You've got to wait until they are born and see if it suits though (my DD2 didn't suit any of the names we had planned!). Maybe as a middle name if not? With you on Leo and Leona though.

liz70 · 22/03/2018 17:40

"They have to grow up with the name you give them for life."

Or they could just change it if they hate it that much.

Iwanttobeagranny · 22/03/2018 17:44

In our house green only means one thing...weed! Would you really want to call your baby a slang term for a drug because that's what it would be to it's generation? Saying that I wanted to call my son Blue (30 years ago) and it was vetoed...ive always regretted backing down x

You can't create a child-naming dictatorship, OP, both you and your OH need to like and agree on the name. That said, please don't call your child Green. It will mean they get teased and bullied throughout their childhood - thats not fair. You are thinking about what you want, not the effect on your child.

sycamore54321 · 22/03/2018 17:50

Even grammatically it's all wrong. Green is an adjective.

Don't call anyone Green.

BackBoiler · 22/03/2018 17:53

Someone I know's grand-daughter is called Indigo. I think its pretty cool x

Lovingit81 · 22/03/2018 17:56

LOVE IT!! Do it, take no notice of the bores on here with all the average names. You won’t regret your instincts you will regret not being brave. There are loads of crazy names out there now, it will probably be normal by the time they hit school. I applaud your individuality Grin Ps my son has an out there name and he loves it and we love it. Couldn’t give two flying f##*swhat anyone else thinks.

whippetwoman · 22/03/2018 18:12

I’m going to say the thing I always say about unusual names on here. Names come in and out of fashion. The unusual and unique name you love now could become a top 5 name in 20 years. This happened to my own name.

Ivygarden · 22/03/2018 18:31

Green?! Poor kid
