To want an alternative baby name

GreenieBeanie · 21/03/2018 02:27

DP and I are trying to come up with baby names (we're waiting to find out the sex), he is favouring names such as Leo and Leona, but I love the name Green for a boy or girl. He's trying to veto it but I'm sticking to my guns here, I love it! AIBU to want a pretty out there name for lo? Would I be setting them up for a life of hating their name?

OP posts:
dragonara53 · 22/03/2018 21:04

I like Zelda for a girl.😀

DairyisClosed · 22/03/2018 21:06

Green isn't a name.

GoldenHefalump · 22/03/2018 21:08

I've always wondered what sort of person looks at a baby and says "ah, that's our little baby Trevor"

I think it with Gary. Ah look, beautiful baby Gary Grin

84CharingCrossRoad · 22/03/2018 21:08

Reminds me of Green Gartside of Scritti Politti.

midnightmisssuki · 22/03/2018 21:13

No one would do this to their own child. OP - you must be joking right? Children might laugh at your child in the future i fear.....what about something 'green' as a middle name?

GoldenHefalump · 22/03/2018 21:14

What about Greer op?

It kinda sounds like you're going for green and looks like you're going for green but it has the benefit of being an actual name and not sounding stupid.

limitedscreentime · 22/03/2018 21:15

Hmmm, I've been told don't decide on a name whilst you are pregnant - the hormones do funny things to your sense of perspective...

Ariesgirl1988 · 22/03/2018 21:18

@GreenieBeanie Please please please don't call your child Green! I work with kids and believe me they can be cruel. Not to mention applying for jobs in the future imagine someone reading the name Green on the CV. Why not look up unusual names if you don't want your little one to have an ordinary name.

From all the years I've worked with kids I've come across some "out there" names the most very out there ones being for girls Chardonnay, Precious, Blue and Strawberry! for boys Bear, Bo, Rocky, Bobby-Jack (BJ for short Hmm) and one I can't say in case I out someone as its pretty unusual I wish parents would think before they name their kids !

SpareASquare · 22/03/2018 21:22

Green is very try hard Grin

Surely there is another way of showing everyone how young, hip and oh so cool YOU are OP?

Teacher22 · 22/03/2018 21:32

Just a note of social reality here. As a teacher I can attest that kids in the lower sets have ‘out there’ names and the little darlings in the top sets have traditional names. The middle class rule is as follows:- bible names, classical names, kings and queens, Austen and Bronte (authors and characters), Shakespeare character names (probably not Goneril but Regan or Cordelia are OK, for instance.) Some Victorian names are fine, such as Alice and also British ethnic names such as Isla.

Imagine your child not as a baby but in employment. Are we going to get a PM called Green? Probably not.

The ‘Times’ and the ‘Telegraph’ publish their most popular names for the year and they will be the names picked by successful people for offspring who will follow in their footsteps,so they are worth having a look at.

Pinkvoid · 22/03/2018 21:36

My DGM always delights in telling me that someone she knows has a son called Gray and their surname is Parrot. She loves saying Gray Parrot and sniggering to herself, it’s unfathomable to her anyone would name their DC after a colour and I agree Grin.

Your hormones are raging. You’d almost definitely regret that choice. Listen to your DP!

Ariesgirl1988 · 22/03/2018 21:42

'Teacher22

You've got a point there although I've come across some wealthy/posh people giving their children strange names

Puffycat · 22/03/2018 21:44

You’re hormones have clearly effected your reason.
Green is a totally shite name for anyone.
It’s practically child abuse

windchimesabotage · 22/03/2018 21:52

I think its a lovely name.
But then I did get slated on here for suggesting I call my daughter Tristessa...
November also got vetoed by my husband. (But he suggested Autumn.... whats the difference?!?!)

I suppose the compromise is to call her something a bit more traditional that begins with a G and could be shortened to 'Green' for a nickname....

SistersOfPercy · 22/03/2018 22:00

I'd consider green if my surname was day ☺️

True story. In early pregnancy I decided the way forward was 'cherokee cheyanne' 'Troy' Or Roman. I blame hormones.
Thankfully somewhere along the line I came to my senses, had a son and gave him a rather normal name.
I still shudder to think of a parents night discussing cherokee....

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/03/2018 22:01

Greer? As in Garson? Not quite as hideous as Green, but it's got a similysiybdand level of pretension

mrssapphirebright · 22/03/2018 22:12

Well my name is Sapphire. Hated it growing up as it was so out there (hippy mother). By the time I git to 21 though I loved it, it makes people remember you! Love it even more as I've got older, I'm 42 now and no one old like me has an out there name. Obviously most people call me Saffy for short.
My longer brother seriously got picked on when he was younger - his name is River. Totally loves it now that he is a musician. My sis is a slightly more normal name of Hazel.

In my opinion Green isn't awful, but it's not very pretty / manly. It's a bit nothing really but each to their own.

For sure they will hate it when they are young and then either love it when they are older or still hate it and change their name!

Anne54 · 22/03/2018 22:14

When I worked in a secondary school in Scotland, there was a boy called Blue. His dad was probably a Rangers fan.

Nagsnovalballs · 22/03/2018 22:16

Green is slang for cash in the USA and weed everywhere, so excellent for a future drug dealer. It’s a very lucrative industry.

Twofurrycats · 22/03/2018 22:24

My great aunt always claimed that when she was little there was a man called Brown green in the village (product of miss Brown marrying Mr green) . You do have to wonder about looking at your new baby and thinking we'll call him Brown. This would've been late 1800's roughly.

Abbylee · 22/03/2018 22:27

In the Southern US, children are often given their mother's last name as a first. Television reporter Stone Phillips, for example.

He/she will never get a keychain or pencil at the gift shop with their name. Stupid point but emblematic.
Happy and safe delivery.Flowers

Jessikita · 22/03/2018 22:38

Call them Kryptonite that’s gredn

SaucyJack · 22/03/2018 22:39

I'm pretty sure you could get all manner of colouring pencils anywhere with "green" written on the side.

But please don't let that be a selling point OP. I thought it was a shite name when I first heard it yesterday, and it hasn't grown on me with time.

Passenger42 · 22/03/2018 22:45

I've got a pocket full of pretty Green.. I'm gonna put it in the fruit machine.

hormones and baby names don't mix. Give birth and wait until you have to register a name so that you can see the colouring and features of your baby. Chose something that is going to sound ok if you shout it from the top of the street, pick a name that cannot be rhymed with rude words, something that can be spoken and written with ease, but no steer clear of little green leprechaun. Have your piss take radar switched on when your female friends say ohh that's nice..

Robstersgirl · 22/03/2018 22:52

You know Green is a street name for cannabis right? Hmm
