To want an alternative baby name

GreenieBeanie · 21/03/2018 02:27

DP and I are trying to come up with baby names (we're waiting to find out the sex), he is favouring names such as Leo and Leona, but I love the name Green for a boy or girl. He's trying to veto it but I'm sticking to my guns here, I love it! AIBU to want a pretty out there name for lo? Would I be setting them up for a life of hating their name?

Luna or Mila

FlyingMonkeys · 21/03/2018 07:24

What about Cyan or Colbat? I liked Bleu when I was pregnant. But decided against it.

BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs · 21/03/2018 07:25

Zelena is giving me some serious badass-90s-witch vibes.

They use it for one of the witches in Once Upon a Time!

I really like Zelena. Green though? By itself? Teal? No!

Stay away from the colour wheel!

FlyingMonkeys · 21/03/2018 07:28

Zelena would probably become Lena. Which sounds nice.

7to25 · 21/03/2018 07:31

Colman is an Irish name. FYI.

PippilottaLongstocking · 21/03/2018 07:31

A popular Instagram family has a child called Hawkinz Greene

I can't say I'm a fan

Mix56 · 21/03/2018 07:36

just call her Giselle, thus GiGi

GrannyGrissle · 21/03/2018 07:37

Ichabod is lovely PP. Is your niece a human or a 'fur baby' who attends doggy day care not 'school'?
All this name suggests to me is that Green (or Overy or Hardon)'s parents are ahem not quite all there. Streetslang wise Green means weed or money so i'd think dealer/junkie parents and i am usually a fan of something a bit different. Green party = socks and sandals wearing imbiciles. Green = naive. Green Sleeves. Grennie (phlegmie snot ball). Why not just go for Lion and be done with it?
Does anyone else predict a massive swingback to Pauline/Maureen/Sarah/Louise/Joanna names and booming trade at the deed poll place when all these poor sods come of age?

IWouldBeSuperb · 21/03/2018 07:37

Sage might work for a girl?

Although not if your surname in any way resembles 'onion' or 'stuffing'... Hmm

NorthernKnickers · 21/03/2018 07:39

And all those saying GiGi would be a 'Cute name for a little girl'! That 'little girl' will be a 46 year old woman one day...saddled with a bloody ridiculous name like GiGi! Babies GROW INTO ADULTS!! Jesus! It even 'looks' ridiculous...just imagine that on a business card with LLB next to it 🙄

Mix56 · 21/03/2018 07:41

GiGi is a common diminutive for Giselle in France,

Twinkie1 · 21/03/2018 07:42

DD is 4 and all her babies/toys are called Lilly Teal. (Just saying)

I fear you'll have a few tea spitting moments if you go ahead and call your baby Green.

There are plenty of prettier colours you could use.

LastNightsMakeUp · 21/03/2018 07:43

@PippilottaLongstocking OMG I had to google Hawkinz Greene as I couldn't quite believe it! Brother called Kormic Bleu.... and they have 16 other children. I had to stop looking....

KERALA1 · 21/03/2018 07:47

Such an odd thing to do. Like playing a massive joke - but on your child. So they have to say "I'm Green" every time they meet someone. Are you English? The connotation of being "green" is being inexperienced or jealous.

I'm all for leaving the top ten behind but this is actually cruel.

KERALA1 · 21/03/2018 07:49

Oh and they wouldn't just "hate their name" they would hate you - I have a 12 year old..

EllieMe · 21/03/2018 07:50

Green is daft.

Don't come back here moaning about a child being bullied for their name in years to come.

MinaPaws · 21/03/2018 07:51

You will so outgrow wanting to call your baby Green. That's an idea of a child. Maybe a cool kid with long curls. Suppose you get a chubby, clumsy introvert who wants to be an accountant.
My DSis wanted to call her first child Blue. Luckily husband veoted it. She cringes now at the thought of foisting such a self-indulgent name on another person. Leo and Leona are lovely names.

GU24Mum · 21/03/2018 07:52

OP, do you have an "out there" name? If not, it seems like a hard thing to saddle a child with unless you know they will either have a celeb lifestyle or be cool and resilient. Can't you give him a more conventional name (doesn't have to be a top 3 name) and call him Green as a nickname?

We didn't name our DS for weeks so ended up giving him a nickname (think Bear or similar) but although we sometimes call him that at home, we do so less and less and he has a "normal" name. One of his friends born the same week has an odd name and it still gets eyebrow raises years later.

Amanduh · 21/03/2018 07:55

Green.. Green. I hope you’re joking.

Littlecaf · 21/03/2018 07:57

Use it as a middle name? My mum talked my cousin out of calling her son Red, he has it as middle name and it works. He’s a 15 year old football, gaming and girls obsessed teenager now - he’d now hate being called Red all the time but thinks it’s fine as a middle name.

MinaPaws · 21/03/2018 07:58

OP, do you have an "out there" name?
That's a good point. Why not introduce yourself to new people for the next six months as Orange or Purple, and see how they react. try putting it on your CV or trying to talk to a bank manager. If you feel even a tiny bit silly or embarassed, maybe you'll get the message.

Aftereights91 · 21/03/2018 07:58

Please please please don't use green orbit. It sounds like a chewing gum

TammyWhyNot · 21/03/2018 08:00

I think Green is great.
Especially if your surname is House.
Or Egenham.

Rumpledfaceskin · 21/03/2018 08:01

The fact that being green is an actual phrase or the way people describe someone whose about to be sick would put me off. There’s ‘out there’ names and then there’s just unpleasant. Sorry I’d have a rethink!

ALemonyPea · 21/03/2018 08:02

I used to go to a school with a boy called Green. He was one of the coolest kids I knew, everyone loved him.
