To want an alternative baby name

DP and I are trying to come up with baby names (we're waiting to find out the sex), he is favouring names such as Leo and Leona, but I love the name Green for a boy or girl. He's trying to veto it but I'm sticking to my guns here, I love it! AIBU to want a pretty out there name for lo? Would I be setting them up for a life of hating their name?

How about Bonzo if it’s a boy and Pingu if it’s a girl? I think they are more interesting than Green which is just a colour and a political party.

NotTakenUsername · 21/03/2018 05:37

you never know it might grow on him (lol)

Mould can be a bluey greedy black fusion, so technically any of the three have the potential to grow on something

NotTakenUsername · 21/03/2018 05:38

greeny*

iLoveABiccy · 21/03/2018 05:39

GiGi would be such a cute name for a girl !! And Avery.

Cannot stand the name Leona

Teal is also nice!

Snipples · 21/03/2018 05:42

I really wouldn't call your child green.

My first impression, aside from what a weird name, is that green means inexperienced - like fresh out of uni and clueless. It doesn't strike me as someone who knows what they're doing.

Remember your child will grow up one day and be looking for a job.

roundthehorn · 21/03/2018 05:43

Green Gartside, from Scritti Politti, was born Paul Julian. Maybe better to stick to a less "Zany" name and let him (or her) choose to change it when s/he's old enough to have an opinion.

Dancinggoat · 21/03/2018 05:53

Kids here say 'Greeny' to mean a snotty spit !!!! As in what footballers do on the pitch. Yuk !!
Be careful with how a name can be turned.

TacoFlavouredKisses · 21/03/2018 06:00

I hope this isn't a real thread Sad Bogies and naivety aside, green also = marijuana.

Uniglo18 · 21/03/2018 06:15

Leo Green Surname works but not Green Middle name surname.

You're naming a potential adult as well as a child and they're a grown up for much longer than they're a child. Choose wisely.

ChocolateCrunch · 21/03/2018 06:27

Options for a girl if you want a 'green' name - Olive, Fern, Ivy, Jade, Myrtle, Emerald, Willow, or go all Gwynnie with Apple. More difficult with boys, unless you like Forest (Gump), Malachi(te) or Hunter.

Imbluedabadee · 21/03/2018 06:28

I kind of like it!

Ihatemyclients · 21/03/2018 06:31

It's certainly not my cup of tea and I think you run the risk of setting your child up for a lifetime of people making snap judgments about them because of their name. That said, if you and your husband both loved it I'd say it was only really your views that matter. Since he hates it though it's presumably off the cards? Whatever name you end up with you both have to be happy with it!

SilverySurfer · 21/03/2018 06:33

Green is a daft name. If your child is a boy you could call him Ichabod? I doubt there would be another in his class Grin

DullAndOld · 21/03/2018 06:38

it's not so much that it sounds 'orbital' -- more just silly.

Anyway you do know that 'marijuana leaf' is referred to by dealers and users as 'green' don't you?

You might as well just call him Amnesia Haze tbh.

BeansandSausages · 21/03/2018 06:42

I have met one. My dc just questioned it once and then accepted it as his name. Quite suits him to be honest.

LastNightsMakeUp · 21/03/2018 06:43

If you'd likely call a dd Gigi then why not go with that? 100 times better than Green, also much nice than Leonora IMO... hormones are a funny old thing. I'm so relieved we didn't chose some names on our shortlist!

KERALA1 · 21/03/2018 06:54

When I was hormonal I fixed on the name lorelai. Our surname begins with l and has another syllable beginning with l. I look at my careful bookish 11 year old and shudder - she would have hated it! You need to think of the child they won't necessarily be extrovert attention seekers revelling in having a way out name chosen to prove how quirky and original you are..

LouseHouse · 21/03/2018 07:04

Gah. I kind of like it. I wanted/still want Blue as a middle name for DS but DH said no. Given that green is both our favourite colour maybe I would've had more luck with that Grin
Would Green as a middle name work for both of you?
Teal is also cool. Reminds me of Abney and Teal. Oooh, Abney Green??

sarcasmisnotthelowestformofwit · 21/03/2018 07:06

Green is the colour of inexperience and of jealousy. Sorry but I think YABVVVU to your DC.

India1819 · 21/03/2018 07:08

I’m all for unusual names but green is just a bit daft, and doesn’t sound particularly nice.

Also what if she wants to take her husband’s name when she marries and his surname is green. Mrs Green Green. 🙄 off on a tangent

whatisausername · 21/03/2018 07:12

What the actual fuck

PurpleDaisies · 21/03/2018 07:15

How would they introduce themselves? “Hello, I’m Green...” with envy is the natural end to that sentence.

Absolutely ridiculous name.

glueandstick · 21/03/2018 07:19

Avery makes me think of printable sticky labels....

backsackcraic · 21/03/2018 07:21

Yes YABVU

NorthernKnickers · 21/03/2018 07:22

😳😮 Please don't. It's far too...😩. Sorry. Teacher here...children are cruel, really, you would be setting your child up for YEARS of taunting. Primary would be challenging but high school would be a fucking nightmare! Unless you're loaded and are going Dead Posh Private...in which case crack on 🙄
