To want an alternative baby name

DP and I are trying to come up with baby names (we're waiting to find out the sex), he is favouring names such as Leo and Leona, but I love the name Green for a boy or girl. He's trying to veto it but I'm sticking to my guns here, I love it! AIBU to want a pretty out there name for lo? Would I be setting them up for a life of hating their name?

Green is awesome.

Why not got for siblings called Brown and White to get the full-on druggie parent chic?

Tinkobell · 21/03/2018 08:47

The negative connotation of Green would be naive and / or envious.

justanotheruser18 · 21/03/2018 08:51

Green? It's a new one to me. I'd prefer names with associations to green, natural things.. like Forrest or Aspen or River or Eden.

RJnomore1 · 21/03/2018 08:52

I was thinking I actually don't mind green then I remembered it's a form of cannabis.

So a no from me too, sorry op.

justanotheruser18 · 21/03/2018 08:52

I knew a little boy called Red. It was short for Redford.

justanotheruser18 · 21/03/2018 08:53

^^ love your choices of Avery & Joni.

Giggorata · 21/03/2018 08:53

I can think of many worse names than Green.. as long as your surname isn't Mould, Grass, etc, or even Brown, White or Black; it would sound very silly. Smile

justanotheruser18 · 21/03/2018 08:55

Love the name Gray too. This is a great thread.

kierenthecommunity · 21/03/2018 09:05

Green immediately took me back to doing Richard II for A Level and Bushy, Bagot and Green, the kings snivelling sycophants. What a trio of fuckwits they were. So for that reason, no.

bananamonkey · 21/03/2018 09:06

Meh I've heard worse, prefer it for a boy though, love the name Gray too.

Mumofkids · 21/03/2018 09:06

I think if your heart is set on Green, you should consider Greene. I know a little boy called this and it's fine. It's more like using a surname as a firstname (Jackson, Harrison etc) I very nearly called one of mine Pixie which I loved at the time but she has a classic French name, and I'm glad now as she's actually a very anxious child and I don't think Pixie would have helped her! That said my son has a very unusual name, which was slated on here and he loves it and is 18! It's never been an issue for him.

EgremontRusset · 21/03/2018 09:08

I came across an (adult, woman) Evergreen the other day and I kind of love it

GreenieBeanie · 21/03/2018 09:11

Stay away from the colour wheel

Grin Well we are going to B&Q later, he'll have to drag guide me away from the Dulux colour charts

Why does your child need a 'different' name? Once they're born they'll be so special to you they could be called John Smith and you'll think they're marvellous.

Who exactly benefits from being called something like Green? Your child or you? It's you isn't it?

ElderflowerWaterIsDelish · 21/03/2018 09:13

A baby name should be something you BOTH agree on , that you BOTH choose together and that you BOTH love...if he doesn't like green, and you don't like Leo and Leona then all those names need to be scrapped and you need to together find names you both like...

Why don't you print out a list of traditional and alternative baby names, both of you get a copy, cross out ones you hate, put a ring around ones you like, then compare your results....all the names that you both put a ring around, are the ones you both like...

GreenieBeanie · 21/03/2018 09:23

I like Greenlee, Greene and Girinhi (green in DPs second language for a girl)

shesakeeper · 21/03/2018 09:25

Do you think they'll like that name, OP? When they're being called upon in class or called into a job interview?

GreenieBeanie · 21/03/2018 09:31

I'm in two minds whether they'll like it, as in 12-20 years there'll be a lot more adults with unusual names than there are now.

Don't worry though this thread has made me put it firmly in the maybe pile and it'll probably stay there unless they pop out Green and in that case they're being called Gamora Grin

It's not easy being green

🐸🐸🐸 Grin.

MimiSunshine · 21/03/2018 09:38

Green is just your pregnancy hormones making you crazy. How about:

Verna
Jade
Jaida
Olive
Teal (still pretty out there, but I’m conditioned to it being normal from Abney £ Teal)
Forrest
Verde
Sage
Moss

How the devil do I know that?

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 21/03/2018 09:50

GreenieBeanie · 21/03/2018 09:52

Don't go near Farrow and Ball or your child will end up being called Elephants Breat or Dead Salmon
