To wonder why we hate our curves?

Ive been reading the beauty myth by Naomi Wolf and she makes some very intetesting points about the diet industry.

In the 1950s etc when women weren't in the workplace, curves were celebrated. Monroe was a size 16.

Since the 1960s when Twiggy was a role model, women were more succesful at work so the patriarchy had to make women slaves to being thin to keep them in check.

So do men prefer curvy women? Isn't fat on females healthy? Ive read on here that men stop fancying their partners when they put on weight?

So are thinner women more attractive or is that just what society wants?

From experience and after reading threads on here, dieting makes us miserable and we have a bad relationship with food..so why hate our natural curves (not obesity rolls of fat.)?

When I was 8.5st and size 8 I looked tiny, because of my medium frame. But when I see on here that size 6 isn’t necessarily tiny I despair.

HuskyMcClusky · 21/03/2018 07:56

Size 6 is tiny for most people. Unless you are very short or there’s major vanity sizing going on.

expatinscotland · 21/03/2018 08:00

'I hate posters like expatinscotland who try to pretend that "normal slim people" do not exist in the real world, and that no one knows anyone being a size 8/10 in the real world ever.

I give not a gram of fuck about shit stirring namechangers who appear on multiple threads spouting a load of chauvinist, backwards-thinking bollocks and/or me-railing.

As you were. Hmm

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 21/03/2018 08:03

expatinscotland

huh?! what's wrong with you?
You insult all women and pretend that we are all overweight or we are lying, where the hell do you live, and now you go on a rant of weird personal attacks? Being a size 8-10 is chauvinist? WTF are you on about?

Haven't had your coffee yet or something?

FluffyWuffy100 · 21/03/2018 08:06

Curves are lovely.

Excess fat is not.

Being fat doesn’t mean you are ‘curvy’.

bananafish81 · 21/03/2018 08:07

I'm most interested to find out that I might not exist! I must be imagining all those size 6s and 8s I buy. And the fact that I often can't find the smaller sizes because all that's left on the racks are the 16s and 18s.

I don't eat clean. My diet is appalling. I am certain I will get cancer because of a family history. But I'm perplexed at the idea that I might be a few figment of my own imagination.

I couldn't give a shit what anyone's size is. I'm far more interested in a healthy body than one that's aesthetically pleasing. My body doesn't work particularly well with all sorts of health issues (unrelated to my weight) so I certainly don't count myself in this bucket!

Nothing's wrong with me, ikept and I have in no way insulted 'all women', all nearly 4bn of them.

I speak in general.

As you were.

Bye now, you're going on my imaginary ignore.

^What she said.

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 21/03/2018 08:14

husky what is ‘tiny’? That is a totally relative concept.

I wouldn’t class myself as ‘tiny’.

It LOOKS tiny because these days, tons of people are way bigger than they need to be.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 21/03/2018 08:16

expatinscotland I have absolutely no idea what you are on about.

ethelfleda · 21/03/2018 08:22

I'm not sure it isn't more of a wanting what you havent got mentality. All through my teenage years and into my twenties I was ridiculed for being too skinny. I had some people make some very nasty comments about my size (5'7" and a size 8/10) I hated my body and always covered up and wore very padded bras etc. I desperately wanted a figure like Jennifer Lopez or Beyonce etc celebs who are beautifully curvy and womanly. In the end, I went to the doctors who told me I was perfectly healthy and I stopped worrying about it so much.

Luckily, thanks to having my first child 5 months ago I finally have a body I quite like. But having said that, I'm just not as bothered by things like this anymore.

In general, most women are critisized for their shape and you'll find people are attracted to all sorts. I don't think all men prefer one body type! Nor do I care a crap when men prefer anyway Grin

HuskyMcClusky · 21/03/2018 08:28

It LOOKS tiny because these days, tons of people are way bigger than they need to be.

Even if you took every overweight person out of the equation, size 6 is still very small. Unless, as I said, a person is very short and small-framed.

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 21/03/2018 08:30

husky define ‘very small’.

It is relative.

In Korea, a size 6 is totally normal, and most younger women are around 5ft4 - 5ft8. No one would remark on a size 6 woman being particulary small.

Jaygee61 · 21/03/2018 08:36

In North Korea most people are malnourished apart from Kim Jong Un.

QuimReaper · 21/03/2018 08:40

I agree Husk, a size 6 person is very unlikely to be carrying much excess body fat.

I'm a size 8 and am carrying excess body fat though, very wobbly of tum, and 20-25lbs ago I was only a size 10, but, well, had 20-25lbs of fat jiggling around on the same frame I have now. It really is frame dependent. My friend is about 5'10 and a broad-built size 12, with the most perfect underwear model type figure. She's really fit with lovely lean muscles and not an ounce of fat on her. I'd say I'm jealous, but I'm just not committed to pilates and Saturday morning runs Grin

Blahblahdoll · 21/03/2018 08:47

I think most men prefer a figure like Kelly Brook over Victoria Beckham or Dawn French.

KittenBeast · 21/03/2018 08:55

Well, we aren't all like Kelly Brook, are we? Not many are. Reinforcing these ideals is only making it worse. Fuck this thread, I'm off to take my tall, lanky, boyish, flat chested uglycozit'snotfeminine body off for a workout.

HuskyMcClusky · 21/03/2018 08:59

Not sure it’s possible to define ‘very small’.

Tbh, I was talking about Caucasian people. My Thai friend is a size 6, but her frame is the size I was in primary school.

strawberrygelato · 21/03/2018 09:11

I think most men prefer

Yes you think. Not based on fact what so ever.

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 21/03/2018 09:13

jaygee I think it’s perfectly reasonable to assume I was talking about South Koreans.

husky I don’t get this ‘Asians are child sized’ nonsense. Not my experience at all. There are plenty of big chunky people here - very few obese people though - getting more as they start to eat more junk food like the westz

SuperBeagle · 21/03/2018 09:16

Marilyn Monroe had several miscarriages and abortions, so that may well explain why she appears to randomly have a bit of a belly, and then have a tiny waist at other times.

Either way, she was not a modern size 12. She was a modern 6 in the waist, 8-10 bust.

quackingduck222 · 21/03/2018 09:24

I’ve noticed lately lots of online clothes shops have rebranded the word “plus size” to curvy.

So you can’t be non plus size and still curvy?

Everything seems to be sections now clothes wise.
Petite - under 5ft 3 but most shops stock size 4/6
Unamed - people over 5ft3 usually size 8-18
Curvy
Tall
Maternity

I just find it strange that there seems to be no range for say 5ft5 women who are smaller than a size 8. Where do they shop?

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 21/03/2018 09:29

quacking petite is for short arses though. Jeans in H&M for example can be a size 6 but so long that they drag halfway down the street on me.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 21/03/2018 09:34

Yes you think. Not based on fact what so ever.

It was hardly a controversial statement!!!

Mookatron · 21/03/2018 09:57

Who gives a shit what most men prefer? Why are we spending our time thinking about this shit? Men are not doing it. They are not hating themselves, hating their 'fat' or their arses or any other inconsequential appearance related nonsense. They are not wondering what kind of body shape women prefer, they are assuming some skinny big tits woman on the end of a computer screen should be flattered by their pasty-faced attention.

People find other people attractive. Many people are interested in the MINDS of other people and the things they DO and THINK, and kindness, and laughing, and having children and teaching them and reading and learning just LIVING without worrying about the size of someone else's arse.

And the health thing is a red herring. Sure, we should try to stave off the culture of sugar/huge portions/snacking but what is at fault here is people trying to sell us things and bombarding us with constant messages about what we should spend our money on, not individual people, who should be allowed to get on with their own fucking lives.
