To wonder why we hate our curves?

Ive been reading the beauty myth by Naomi Wolf and she makes some very intetesting points about the diet industry.

In the 1950s etc when women weren't in the workplace, curves were celebrated. Monroe was a size 16.

Since the 1960s when Twiggy was a role model, women were more succesful at work so the patriarchy had to make women slaves to being thin to keep them in check.

So do men prefer curvy women? Isn't fat on females healthy? Ive read on here that men stop fancying their partners when they put on weight?

So are thinner women more attractive or is that just what society wants?

From experience and after reading threads on here, dieting makes us miserable and we have a bad relationship with food..so why hate our natural curves (not obesity rolls of fat.)?

I don't have any pictures of myself but I am size 12. That's plus size. Plus size = fat?

Fatandfrigid · 20/03/2018 19:54

I’m fat

And frigid
Apparently

sunandmoonshine · 20/03/2018 19:57

No, not fat at all Lucy. Smile

LucyMorningStar · 20/03/2018 20:00

Oh Ok, thank you! I don't know half the time what's acceptable anymore

Jaygee61 · 20/03/2018 22:28

*50 years ago people ate much healthier diets and didn’t snack. Most women were that size. They weren’t alway “ on a diet” '

Many, many were constantly on diets, used appetite suppressants and/or smoked to keep their weight down.*

I remember my mother constantly trying to slim back in the 60s/70s when I was a child/teenager. She was always about a size 16, never a slim woman.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 20/03/2018 22:37

Vintage adverts for weight loss are hilarious, but what they considered "fat" was something else.

SpringHen · 20/03/2018 22:43

Remember the old "if you can pinch an inch...." (you need X diet)?

I can pinch an inch as a size 10!

Our perception of what looks fat/slim has definitely changed!!

prideofaberdeen · 20/03/2018 23:13

Lucy it's impossible to say. Do you feel overweight? As I said in my earlier post, I'm officially a healthy weight but I know I'm not as I'm flabby. I look slightly smaller than the women in the picture below who are a size 16 and I'm a 10-12. If I go up to a 14, which happens occasionally, I'm most definitely overweight.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 21/03/2018 00:40

Marilyn Monroe was fit and toned and she did exercise! And she was never a size 16!

HelenaDove · 21/03/2018 01:04

"Meanwhile over on the 'I feel sorry for Ant Mc Wotsit' thread my disorderly eating has never put a three year old in hospital but you never hear any 'issues to work through' apologies for a bit of fat that doesn't hurt anyone except the bearer."

YY Mookatron. I pointed this out on one of the Ant threads. I also pointed out that female celebs who dare to be over a size 12 get shit from the press every day all the time and far less sympathy than Ant is getting Ive never heard of anyone driving under the influence of a Krispy Kreme. We live in a twisted world where it is more offensive to be overweight than ANYTHING ELSE.

I used to be a size 28 and am now a 14/16 I will never be slim but am a fucking sight less than i used to be. I could lose another several pounds................by having the loose skin removed from my stomach but i cant afford it and im not sure i fancy going under the knife unnecessarily

Octave777 · 21/03/2018 01:19

I think a lot of ppl have body dismorphia: but the opposite of the normal skinny girl feeling fat. I think a lot of ppl see themselves smaller than what they are and say it's curves. Sometimes I'm like it and then I have to have a wake up call that I need to cut back on the choc.

Octave777 · 21/03/2018 01:20

*dysmorphia

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 21/03/2018 01:29

To be slim/healthy you need to eat healthily and exercise. For life. That’s just facts. You can’t fo it for a bit and then sit on the sofa for the rest of your life eating chips.

I couldn’t care less if people are fat or not, but I do get bored with the constant diet chat. I think so many people are emotionally attached to food that it makes them kind of insane.

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 21/03/2018 01:34

Can’t believe an 8 is seen as being ‘very small’. It’s a perfectly normal size. I vary between size 4-8 depending on the shop and I am hardly skinny. Yes I have a small frame, but I have boobs, an arse, some tummy fat and I eat a lot.

I balance that with exercising a lot and the stuff I eat is generally healthy.

We have lost sight of what is a normal size.

HelenaDove · 21/03/2018 01:44

Well you are rather invested for someone "bored with the constant diet chat"

HelenaDove · 21/03/2018 01:45

a 14 is a normal size for me. 4 to 8 is normal for you

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 21/03/2018 01:48

helena where did I say a 14 wasn’t normal?

Posting on a thread is ‘over invested’? Well, k then.

HelenaDove · 21/03/2018 01:49

"We have lost sight of what is a normal size"

We most certainly have.

Grin
ThisIsTheFirstStep · 21/03/2018 01:53

And what part of that statement says that a 14 is not a normal size?

HelenaDove · 21/03/2018 01:57

Im not saying that you said 14 wasnt normal Just that each persons normal is different.

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 21/03/2018 01:59

But that wasn’t my point at all. My point was that people see an 8 as tiny when it isn’t.

HelenaDove · 21/03/2018 02:01

Well yes it depends a lot on someones height and natural build.

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 21/03/2018 02:02

Right so...what’s your point because right now it seems like you’re saying exactly the same as me.

KittenBeast · 21/03/2018 02:10

Here we go again with the 'real woman' shit. Last time I checked, I'm real, despite being flat chested with all the curves of a pencil. Some tosser posted some meme on Facebook something about women without curves earlier today, and it's fucking annoying. Love them if you have them, great, don't start asking what men prefer. Think you'll find it's a mixed bag.

HelenaDove · 21/03/2018 02:12

Kitten it doesnt even make sense does it EVERY woman is a real woman Confused
