..to not cancel my tickets?

Probably a boring one...

I have tickets for a musical in London on Friday afternoon after wisdom teeth extraction on the Tuesday morning. I've never had surgery before but AIBU to think I will be fine to sit on a train and sit through a performance after 3 days recovery?

My friend recently had theirs taken out, was back in school the next day. You will be in pain, but no physical reason you cant sit on a train and in a theatre rather than at home.

MauriceTheSpaceCowboy · 20/03/2018 12:57

My face was still swelled up like a dormouse at 3 days - my cheeks were huge. Still hurt to smile too widely or eat anything more than soup.

I wouldn’t have wanted to go to a theatre then.

Skinnydecafflatte · 20/03/2018 12:58

Yes you’ll be fine. Mine was quite tough to get out and I then got dry socket which was uncomfortable but I would have been able to sit through a performance no problem. Just take ibuprofen. Top tip don’t swill your mouth out, tilt your head to the side to allow salt water into the extraction site.

Ubercornsdiscoball · 20/03/2018 12:59

Might be personal choice. Some people I know have been fine, others not so much. Impossible for us to say

SillyMoomin · 20/03/2018 13:02

top or bottom? under sedation or not?

I had a bottom wisdom out with sedation as it was "twisted" - shudder- and I was in such pain as the clot dislodged - I wasn't capable of anything let alone enjoying a concert.

I actually had musical tickets when I had a different operation and rang the theatre- although my tickets were non refundable, they were very understanding on the phone and happily changed them to a different day - may be worth trying? The earlier you ring them, the most chance they'll have of reselling them

19lottie82 · 20/03/2018 13:03

I had mine done in the morning and was totally fine (bar not being able to eat for 24 hours) that evening.

Unless there are rare complications you will be absolutely fine.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 20/03/2018 13:06

When I had all of my wisdom teeth removed I had no complications and aside from eating and brushing my teeth was back to normal within a day or so. You could have complications, you may not heal as quickly but what have you got to lose?

PissedOnMyCornflakes · 20/03/2018 13:11

I had all of mine taken out under GA a few years ago. Was fine after and didn't notice any pain might have been because beforehand I was in such ridiculous amounts of pain I didn't notice any after through sheer relief just took ibuprofen for a couple of days, no swelling.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 20/03/2018 13:16

I had mine out a few years ago and went back to work the next day... Passed out and had to stay off for 2 weeks.

Don't underestimate it.

RavenLG · 20/03/2018 13:16

Personal as Uber said. I've not had a wisdom tooth removed, but DP did and didn't have any swelling or pain (except when the packing fell out, as soon as it was put back he was right as rain). I'd just wait and see and be prepared to take the hit if you're not feeling well enough.

soulrider · 20/03/2018 13:18

I had all four removed under local at the hospital. Back in work the next day. No swelling and minimal pain. Certainly nothing like the agony of the infections I'd been suffering from.

sunandmoonshine · 20/03/2018 13:19

How long is a piece of string?

I have known people go back to work in the afternoon after having a wisdom tooth removed, and others be in bed for a week after it.

I wouldn't like to risk it personally. If you could re-arrange the show then I would do so.

Gannicusthemannicus · 20/03/2018 13:23

It is all four and I think it will be under sedation as 3 of the teeth are almost upside-down.

Unfortunately there was an extra charge through the website for a 'flexiticket' which can be cancelled or exchanged so I'm pretty sure changing the ticket is out the window. I think I will see how I go.

Also, do you actually get high after the surgery, like in the funny videos? I'm really not keen on that...

sunandmoonshine · 20/03/2018 13:28

After that update OP, I'm not gonna lie, I would re-arrange. I don't think you will feel very well for the best part of a week!

SheSellSeaShells · 20/03/2018 13:28

I guess no one knows exactly how they will react. I had one wisdom tooth extracted before Christmas (I was in so much pain I was ready to pull it out myself). I had it done at the dentists, with injection to the gum so I didn't feel it. Wasn't the most pleasant thing in the world, but I was wondering round the supermarket an hour later shopping. Wasn't really in any pain afterwards, just felt a bit odd for a while.

sunandmoonshine · 20/03/2018 13:29

Oh, if you can't re-arrange, then just leave it. Maybe you WILL be ok. I hope you are. Good luck. Smile

soulrider · 20/03/2018 13:29

So what's to gain from cancelling?

If no refund and you cannot change it you might as well just see how it goes

LaGattaNera · 20/03/2018 13:29

I had all 4 out under GA and had stitches in the gums. The pain was manageable but was very hard to clean teeth and couldn't do them properly so main issue was stinky breath really horrid - you know your breath is bad when you can smell it yourself Blush

AnnieAnoniMouse · 20/03/2018 13:33

I had 4 taken out under GA. Two above the gum, two below.

I didn’t have that much swelling, but I was in a lot of pain afterwards and felt ghastly from the GA for quite a while. I was off work for at least a week (I don’t remember exactly how long, it was years ago, but definitely at least a week). There’s no way I’d have wanted to sit in a theatre. No way. I barely coped sitting on the sofa with my lovely DP (at the time) looking after me.

My DP had had his out before I met him and he was in a lot less pain and for a lot less time but his face swellled up enormously.

Call the Theatre, explain you’ve been in pain and have been offered this apt to have them removed & try to rebook, you can offer to send them proof of the apt, you have nothing to lose. If they really won’t budge I’d sell them. Chances are you will not want to go.

Sagelistener · 20/03/2018 13:35

I had 4 done under sedation and I would have been physically able to go go to the theater 3 days later pain wise, but my face still looked weird (big bunny cheeks) and i couldn't open my jaw very wide yet so hard to speak/eat etc. so wouldn't have wanted to personally.

DBoo · 20/03/2018 13:38

Had one lower one out that had a twisted root under local and took the week off. Face swelled up and for two or three days it was pretty painful although painkillers took the edge off.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 20/03/2018 13:40

As for the feeling afterwards...apparently I was talking ninety to the dozen on the way home, about all kinds of things. My Dad, to his dying day, was still not prepared to tell me half of it, it was stuff he really felt he didn’t need to know 😖Blush

deeohgee · 20/03/2018 13:43

I had one out a few weeks ago.
Was not erupted so they had to cut gum and stitch.
I was in so much pain I had the weekend and then 4 days off of work.
Shocked me how hard going I found it.

Dons1975 · 20/03/2018 13:45

I had four taken out under GA - I was unable to eat or speak for a week. The pain was unbelievable, my sympathetic mum said I was a dead ringer for Desperate Dan! My husband got his out and was up and about the next day. Really cant tell how you will be.

whiskyowl · 20/03/2018 13:51

It depends how it goes.

Standard extraction with no issues - you'll be fine. Dry socket - you'll be in agony.
