This is a quote of Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon has a number of quotes when Read through the lens of Trump are eerily prescient. Napoleon wasn’t of the same political bent as Trump necessarily, and he was certainly more cerebral, but the lust for power is the same.

Pain I just can't keep up and am in awe of the way you guys manage it!

FB would argue that it doesn't force you to sign up, it's a choice, and if you don't like the terms you don't have to sign the contract. However, you will have the right to object to profiling, so if enough people do that how they're going to make a profit through targeted advertising anymore is still up for debate Wink

frankiestein401 · 20/03/2018 15:38

you're correct pain - gdpr essentially makes what previously were recommended best practice mandatory and if you try to avoid explicit consent you have to say in plain language what you are doing - see recital 39. (this site www.privacy-regulation.eu/en hyperlinks gdpr and has the recitals in line - makes the thing very readable)

cozietoesie · 20/03/2018 15:39

I don't think they will, Gin. Sorry.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if FB relies on consent and just hope other big profiling cos follow suit

Not this one.

www.newsweek.com/jared-kushner-tillerson-secretary-state-853339?utm_campaign=NewsweekTwitter&utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=Social

Former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was reportedly aggrieved at Jared Kushner for what he and other senior White House officials perceived as the president's son-in-law conducting U.S. foreign policy with little consultation or supervision.

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/mississippi-abortion-law-strictest-in-us-ban-15-weeks-gestation-phil-bryant-a8264276.html

The state of Mississippi has just passed the most restrictive abortion law in the United States, barring women from receiving abortions after 15 weeks’ gestation in most cases.

The law – which adds to the state’s current, extensive limitations on abortion – allows for exceptions only if the foetus has health problems making it "incompatible with life" outside of the womb, or if a pregnant woman's life or a "major bodily function" are at risk. No exemptions are allowed for rape or incest.

Thanks for reposting the link, gin. I can't keep up either and keep meaning to go back to older threads but... WHOOSH!

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 20/03/2018 17:41

That’s the beauty of these threads I think. No one person could possibly keep on top of it all but collectively, I think we manage quite well!

These Men Helped Create Cambridge Analytica. Here Is Their New, Very Similar Startup.

Chris Wylie, a data scientist whose work was at the center of a massive Facebook controversy, said publicly that he helped create “Steve Bannon’s psychological warfare tool.” Two of his associates who also helped build that tool have been quietly building another company to analyze and influence human behavior.

That's a timely report, Pain. It would be easy get carried away throwing rotten fruit at Cambridge Analytica and Nix (very easy! Hand me some fruit!), but much of what they did is easy to replicate and already being done.

Would “curator of the chaos” go under skills or hobbies on my cv?

Wtf. Nice try, Facebook. You knew two years ago as per the excellent @harryfoxdavies report in @guardian. If you were "beyond disturbed" you'd have done something about it at the time...

This may have already been posted as I'm waaaay behind the news cycle at the moment. But it has good advice for anyone with a FB account on how to improve/beef-up privacy settingsand/or delete yourself entirely!

If you can stand it--there was a Trump 'portrait' competition. These were shortlisted. Some of them are funny and all of them work in different ways.
