Apparently rich people have TVs in their dining room

So I'm having a conversation with a family member about renovating the dining room and they have the idea of putting a TV in there. I said No, Tv's aren't meant for the dining room where we are meant to eat & enjoy each others company as a family. They respond with 'we're rich & rich people have Tv's in their dining room'.
(We are rich= in love, family etc etc not so much money..yet Grin)
First of all I don't know where they got that notion from that rich people have Tv's in their dining room and secondly not so much an Aibu because I don't think I am at all but what's your take on it?

It really annoys me that the TV is for the majority of the time the focal point at a lot of family gatherings(usually the men in my experience.) I think it should be off limits during any type of family time except for movie night etc. It totally takes away from really getting to spend time with your loved ones especially when you hardly get to see eachother with different work schedules/life in general.

I don’t know anyone with a dining room so no idea if people have them in there. I think TVs are meant to go in whatever room you want- so if you don’t want it in the dining room then don’t.

troodiedoo · 16/03/2018 15:29

I have a tv in my dining room but I'm not rich.

Ginorchoc · 16/03/2018 15:30

Grin not sure it’s a rich thing but old school rich people I know wouldn’t dream of having a TV in the dining room, or in fact any room other than the TV room or Snug. I don’t have a dining room myself poor show right?

Idontdowindows · 16/03/2018 15:32

I have an aquarium in my dining room, does that count? Grin

NancyDonahue · 16/03/2018 15:33

We don't have a dining room but we have a TV in our kitchen diner. It's never on at dinner time because we're usually eating in the lounge with the big TV on Wink

VenusOfWillendorf · 16/03/2018 15:34

The only person I know with a dining room (my great aunt) doesn't have a TV in it, but then she doesn't have a TV anywhere else in the house either. We eat in the kitchen. There is a small TV in the kitchen, it's generally ignored at meals. But we might join in if for example Pointless was on or we might tune into the weather.

Chienrouge · 16/03/2018 15:39

We have a dining room, but no TV in it. I’m not sure we’d count as rich but we’re fairly well off!
I know some genuinely rich people and none of them have a TV in their dining room. Maybe I’m in the wrong circles though, and richer people than them do... who knows.

kinorsam · 16/03/2018 15:41

When I was a kid we had a piano in our dining room.

WyclefJohn · 16/03/2018 15:41

We have a specially dedicated TV room, but we're expats, and the company has paid for us to have a ridiculously big house.

SluttyButty · 16/03/2018 15:42

I have a kitchen diner and have been whining to dh that we need a tv on the wall in there Grin

ToastyFingers · 16/03/2018 15:43

In my experience, the richer you are, the less tvs you have.

A massive TV in every room seems to be a 'working class' thing round these parts.

MauriceTheSpaceCowboy · 16/03/2018 15:48

The rich people I know either don’t have TVs at all, or only have a tv in a dedicated “cinema room” or den, which is just for tv. They definitely don’t have TVs in the dining room, and tbh would probably think it’s a bit working class.

listsandbudgets · 16/03/2018 15:52

We are reasonably well off (certainly not rich) - we have a kitchen diner with no TV in there though like a PP we do have a piano.

I know plenty of people I would describe as rich. Lots of them live in huge houses with real dining rooms (very envious of someone I know who has a huge one with a 12 seat table!) but not one of them have a TV in there...

HOwever if they want to spend their money on a TV in the dining room then odd but fine

Ginslinger · 16/03/2018 15:55

I have a dining room - no tv

MarklahMarklah · 16/03/2018 15:56

My 'dining room' is also my lounge/sitting room so there is a TV in there, but it's the only one in the house. We're not at all rich.

blueskyinmarch · 16/03/2018 15:57

We are not rich but are certainly well off. We do not have a TV in our dining room. It is a place to eat, chat and play board games.

OutyMcOutface · 16/03/2018 15:58

Only nouveau riche have a tv in their dining room. A lot of wealthy families don’t have any TVs at all let alone in a dining room. The suggestion is almost obscene.

PyongyangKipperbang · 16/03/2018 15:59

I wouldnt dream of having a TV in my dining room. I am not allowed to post my first thought on your relative because that word isnt allowed on MN, so I will settle for trash with cash Wink

Is their surname Rooney? :o

NetballHoop · 16/03/2018 15:59

We are "comfortably well off" and don't have a TV in the dining room. It's for eating and talking, not for watching TV. We don't have a TV in the bedroom either.

Firstimefreaked · 16/03/2018 16:01

Of no I must be super broke I haven't owned a tv in a decade or ever as my mum had one when I was a kid. Tbh I prefer computers and iPad and would rather put the radio on when eating

Lweji · 16/03/2018 16:02

They respond with 'we're rich & rich people have Tv's in their dining room'.

Maybe the nouveau rich.

Tell them to go full Donald and have dinner in bed in front of the tv.

m0therofdragons · 16/03/2018 16:02

Tv in dining room is definitely seen as lower / working class in my circles. Similarly TVs in children's bedrooms. People with "new money" often seem to have TVs in every wall.

Flamingoringo · 16/03/2018 16:03

Outy has it; nouveau riche people have T. V.s all over the shop.

Stickerrocks · 16/03/2018 16:03

We are comfortably well off too. We've recently upgraded from a 22" to a 30" TV in our lounge. That's it for the house.

VQ1970 · 16/03/2018 16:05

We have tv in our dining room. We tend to be eating dinner when the evening news is on and we want to listen to it.
