It’s been 21 hours since I witnessed someone repeatedly use air quotes

Who clearly had a limited grasp of quotation marks and I’m still really annoyed by it.

AIBU?

(I’m not)

(I want to dismember them with a blunt “haddock”)

I have a friend who air quotes all the time. Not just for quotes either. It used to irritate me but now I just smile to myself as its her and I love her!

ChaosTrulyReigns · 15/03/2018 15:08

I would "recommend" that yourself needs to relax about dimishing standards of grammer and shizzlel, HoneyD.

Though I nearly through the telephone at the wall this morning when someone told me to "contact ourselves for any further information" for friff sake.

Ugh ugh and thrice ugh.

Rideforthehills · 15/03/2018 15:08

No! Not unreasonable. My Dad's partner does this and it drives me nuts!
I work from home and she refers to it as my "work" - which is hugely rude in my opinion.

I have also been asked what time "dinner" is.

Putting air quotes around something can serve to make the item seem diminished or inconsequential plus its just damn annoying!

Dangerousmonkey · 15/03/2018 15:16

"Nice to see you" seriously, I couldn't resist rideforthehills but I am bloody horrible

Dangerousmonkey · 15/03/2018 15:16

I mean that's what I'd be saying to the Dad's partner

DragonsAndCakes · 15/03/2018 15:17

My five year old does this and it’s annoying enough! (And cute at the same time.) Not cute in an adult though.

YesThisIsMe · 15/03/2018 15:19

Oh god. I walk past a garage daily which offers to MOT “Cars”. It gets to me every time, but seeing it done in airquotes would seriously do my quiche in.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/03/2018 15:21

You look a little fond of parentheses for my liking Honey.

HoneyDragon · 15/03/2018 16:04

MrsTP
Really? (Really?)
(REALLY?)

Chaos, now imagine they randomly air quoted ourselves for no good reason. Would you refrain from going to their establishment and hitting them with your telephone?

@chaos

“Yourself” and “myself” is perfectly acceptable in Ireland, due to links to the Irish language. I always feel I have to defend “myself” / “yourself” for some reason...

Excuse quite marks^^. I hope I haven’t made @op’s head explode Grin!

HoneyDragon · 15/03/2018 16:25

They are asseptible quotation marks and do not discuss or appaul me.
