To miss shopping in the 90's and early noughties

I used to love shopping but now there are very few shops I actually like. I miss Jeffrey Rogers, Bay Trading Co, MK One, Pilot etc. Not high end clothing granted but there were always things I liked.

These days a lot of stores are online but I can't be bothered with what would probably be constant sending things back as a lot of things look great on the hanger but crap on me. Primark is ok but hell to shop in when I can go as it is so busy and don't get me started on the mirrors. New Look is ok as is H & M too but really that's about it. I actually prefer charity shops and car boots now but today I just feel really nostalgic for the high street of yesteryear.

Does anyone else feel the same?

12 year old me fell foul to the Adidas "poppers". I facepalmed when I realised Urban Outfitters were selling them again Sad

I used to go to sixth-form college with a girl whose mum started Hyper Hyper. (Several of my friends went on to work/have stalls there). It was so cool, and so much better than Urban Outfitters which eventually took over the Ken High Street site.

In addition to Flip in Covent Garden, The Garage on Kings Road was another favourite place to buy secondhand Levis. Interstate on Endell Street opposite American Classics was too.

Whoever mentioned Stirling Cooper, yes, I remember that! It was one of the cooler shops and somewhere my older and very cool sister bought clothes.

Several posters were talking about Oxford Circus in the mid-late 90s which had H&M on one corner, Top Shop on another (where Nike Town now is), Shelley's on another and Benetton on the other.

There was also MASH further along on Oxford Street towards Tottenham Court Road, and also another Shelley's branch.

Am trying to remember where the Kookai was in addition to its concession in Selfridges. I loved Kookai, was chatting to a friend about them recently and how amazing their camisoles and mesh/gauze printed cardigans were.

Shopping in the 90s/00s was so much better, things were made properly, didn't fall apart after a few washes and on the whole, were more individual. I find shopping now a chore, everyone sells the same kind of things, mostly 'on trend' things. I don't want that. I want well made, good quality separates that wear well and are stylish.

I can still remember the smell of the La Senza beads.

I had a biscuit tin under my bed which I kept my Stephen Gateley pictures in. I cut them out of magazines and kissed them every night. He was the first in a long line of disappointing crushes.

YANBU. I miss shopping in the 90s-my waist was 23’’ then it was brilliant ... but it’s not anymore! We can’t live in the past. Most Clothes shops now are so boring, it’s all the same drab stuff!

nowater34 · 14/03/2018 22:38

Namechangetempissue My blk patent Chipie trainers were my pride & joy!

I was never bloody allowed Kickers, my 3 yo has a pair (and a puffa jacket), he looks amazing in them!

What were those plimsoll style canvas lace up shoes with the heavy rubber soles?

My mum used to dress me in lots of Oilily but would only buy the black plimsolls from the Freeman Hardy Willis bucket for trainers 😖

Mymouthgetsmeintrouble · 14/03/2018 22:41

nowater34 · 14/03/2018 22:41

Long shot - does anyone here remember Hyper Hyper in London?

Was trying to remember the name, amazing shop!

nowater34 · 14/03/2018 22:44

Was white musk from the Body Shop a thing? And one particular Rimmel lip liner.

nowater34 · 14/03/2018 22:48

@nowater34 I was too lanky not a good look, obviously would love those legs now.

Yeah hate the way shops are so samey now.

Octave777 · 14/03/2018 22:55

Oh Black Cherry Rimmel lipstick with body shop liquid eyeliner! Of course with obligatory long black skirt, black Nirvana t-shirt and black DMs Grin

Kaybush · 14/03/2018 23:00

I remember in 1988 my sister and I got a credit card for the first time, with a £500 limit. It was before the 'high street revolution' so we took the train to London and maxed our cards out in Browns on South Molton Street on a Jasper Conrad mini skirt, a Romeo Gigli crop top and black trainers, and literally lived in that outfit until about November, when it got a bit too cold! Happy days!!

ebonyandivory · 14/03/2018 23:00

nowater Yes, I remember White Musk from the bodyshop. And Dewberry. I miss Dewberry. And Oceanus.

ebonyandivory · 14/03/2018 23:02

Octave Yes to both Tammy Girl and Woolworths Pick and Mix. I used to also love the big Toblerone bars and Choc orange deals at WW- Christmas cost so little. Happy days.

Bunchofdaffodils · 14/03/2018 23:02

Yes, the River Island bags, I thought were so cool. I felt so proud carrying my pe kit in one.

Ariela · 14/03/2018 23:15

Cheesecloth shirt with tie, in a very faded pale green from Etam, slightly darker pale green faded flared jeans from C&A, and platform wedge sandals from FHW.

Ariela · 14/03/2018 23:16

Oh that was the 1970s

Jigglyguff · 14/03/2018 23:18

Charlie White, Impulse vanilla kisses, tartan skirt and crop top, shag bands and hair mascara... I thought I was the dog's bollocks Grin

Papergirl1968 · 14/03/2018 23:21

For those lamenting the loss of Woolies pic n mix, I was reading an article on the bbc website the other day about Norwegians nipping across the border to stock up on sweets in Sweden to avoid the high sugar tax in their own country.
One shop featured has the equivalent of five supermarket aisles of pic n mix! Sounds like my dream come true Grin
I have no idea how to attach the article but here’s some of the sweets to salivate over.

Shag bands for the uninitiated.

Papergirl1968 · 14/03/2018 23:25

And I miss Richard shops, Etam, C&A, Chelsea Girl and all those. The Virgin megastore had some of the most coveted carrier bags.
Happy memories!

ebonyandivory · 14/03/2018 23:31
