To get irritated by show off women at the gym?

I do body Attack. Every session there are 4 or 5 women who stand at the front chanting loudly, shouting in time with punches and they wear MMA type mits to do the session in. Why??? It's non contact, why wear mits?! Just for attention? It's putting me off going because I end up just getting annoyed with these women! Just no need for the OTT shit surely?

I mean, OK, I'm looking at the actions alone. No projections, no making stuff up, no speculation. Just the simple actual indisputable facts.

These people run on the inside in small circles, bang into people, do the wrong moves, add extra exercises when they don't have to and are out of time with the music. That's all we know for sure.

It just doesn't say 'attention seeking' to me. It says 'overenthusiastic and not very bright/co-ordinated'.

That's all.

it feels wrong to undertake given we’ve been told to go slower on inside so I High knees run instead-another area i suspect I’m seen as ‘showing off’ I guess.

I wouldn't even think about this if I were in a class like that. I know I'm a slow runner so if I found myself undertaking someone in the faster ring, I would just assume that person was in the wrong league and not think anything further of it. It really would not occur to me to start modifying my exercising based on what they might think when I knew I was in the right place.

ethelfleda · 14/03/2018 12:42

Oh no - enjoying their workout?? Whatever next? They should be told to maintain a stiff upper lip at all times.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 14/03/2018 12:49

I don't think they're malicious - I just think they're being annoying. And performative.

Honestly, you can tell the difference between the person who's not been many times and goes left instead of right or is out of time, and the leaper-arounders who deliberately do it faster and are out of time and place, you really can. Nobody ever minds when people just get it wrong - because we all started once.

I guess it does annoy me most in the running track, because I enjoy the bit where you get to run fast and would like to be able to do that around the edges of the room like you're specifically asked to, but can't because very regular class members don't/won't do what they're asked to do.

I like seeing people enjoy their workout - there's a woman at Combat who totally gives it her all and smiles all the way through, and it makes me smile (in a nice way).

I don't mind the grunters at Pump or the heavy breathers at Pilates, or the very very stretchy women at Pilates. All totally fair enough.

I do mind the small amount of people whose behaviour is actually physically inconsiderate.

drumandthebass · 14/03/2018 15:20

I'm with you OP. I Also get annoyed by women prancing around the changing rooms naked or drying their hair naked - put some knickers on FFS

PoorYorick · 14/03/2018 15:31

Mumsnet: where gyms are for not exercising and changing rooms are for not changing.

Gemini69 · 14/03/2018 15:38

I love the geared up twats up front.. gives us in the middle and back something to aspire too.... plus you know you've made it when your front row... Grin

expatinscotland · 14/03/2018 15:41

Exactly, Yorick.

UnsuspectedItem · 14/03/2018 16:51

If you can't enjoy a fitness class without making a spectacle of yourself then there are some serious underlying issues.

It's perfectly possible to enjoy a class without making a song and dance about it.

There is a spectrum, it's not a choice between being po-faced and half hearted or flailing around like a drunk auditioning for midsummer night dream.

I don't know, in Zumba or Jhoom that's kind of the point.

I love winding myself up at the gym, gets me through the workout. For example;

-combat teachers who can't even punch. (Lapsed kickboxer here).
-women who don't wear sports bras to high impact classes.

Spartacunt · 14/03/2018 18:30

Next time get there early, stand right at the front and wear these

Don’t sweat the small stuff & enjoy the class for yourself

Nakedavenger74 · 14/03/2018 18:44

@goldenbulldog are you saying that there were people at the front of a hot yoga class whooping and shouting?

I've done hot yoga for years and I've never seen that. Ive also slowly made my way to the front on the encouragement of a teacher. It's motivating, it's increased my confidence in my abilities, I can perfect my technique as I'm closer to the mirror and the teacher can see me better to correct me. I'm also a size 18 (down from much much bigger) and there's some poses I can't and will never be able to do (due to excessive boobage, bellyage, age or crap ankles) but I will bloody try my best every time.

Noone in HY gives a damn about anyone else as it too physically and mentally overwhelming so it's the least showyoffy class you can do!

How depressing that someone might find someone trying their best that irritating...

flippertygibbett · 14/03/2018 18:49

I'll be honest, I'm usually so sweaty and out of breath in classes/in the gym I couldn't even tell you how many people are in the room let alone what they're wearing or doing....Confused

If you're able to focus your time and energy on other people instead of you know, not dying, you really are doing exercise all wrong Wink

austenozzy · 14/03/2018 18:51

Just stand up the front and, instead of making clouseau vs cato karate noises, scream “FUCK OFF” at the top of your lungs with every punch and kick. That should get the message across.

flippertygibbett · 14/03/2018 18:56

Mumsnet: where gyms are for not exercising and changing rooms are for not changing.

Howling 🤣🤣

PoorYorick · 14/03/2018 19:05

women who don't wear sports bras to high impact classes.

Well don't give them any headspace, they'll be punished right enough!

cucaracha · 14/03/2018 19:25

women who don't wear sports bras to high impact classes.

but some women forget to put the correct underwear in their gym bag when they leave for work that day Blush
fondly remembering wearing a thong for a high impact class, oh the painful shame

BusterTheBulldog · 14/03/2018 22:02

Putting my sprouts bra on is a work out in itself!

NathusiusPip · 14/03/2018 22:43

Buster that makes sense, I guess. If I could be arsed to get off the sofa and seriously exert myself for a couple of hours, I suppose I think it'd be more useful to learn self defence. I can't be arsed, though, so my opinion is irrelevant. Grin

awesomeness · 15/03/2018 00:01

I can honestly say it would annoy me, I'm autistic so noises, people.....general no for me anyway

BUT I have recently signed up for a gym, totally out if my comfort zone ans a huge thing for me...and booked a load of classes starting next week, different ones just to see what i like and just promptly cancelled the lot after reading some of the comments on here!

how people who don't make unnecessary noise are irritating; or not putting mega effort in, or are not in time or are not sure of the moves

If you not in an 'expert class' just a general class and get irritated when new people join and maybe don't have the skills you've clearly honed.....well that's just plain nasty

HuskyMcClusky · 15/03/2018 01:31

I love the geared up twats up front.. gives us in the middle and back something to aspire too.... plus you know you've made it when your front row

Seriously, the fuck? This thread is so weird.

I stand up the very front at Pump. It’s because a) I can’t see the instructor otherwise as am practically blind, and b) I like being under the fan as am a sweaty beast.

I also use loads of weights. That would be because I’ve been doing it 3x per week for years and otherwise I don’t get a decent workout.

Why the fuck this should bother anyone else is totally beyond me.

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 15/03/2018 02:05

They follow the workout and wear stuff. No big deal.

It sounds like you're insecure and instead of working on yourself, you pick on other people instead (in your head.) I used to do it too til I gained confidence.

People are just doing their own thing, why not do your own thing too?
