To get irritated by show off women at the gym?

AnythingGoez · 13/03/2018 23:25

I do body Attack. Every session there are 4 or 5 women who stand at the front chanting loudly, shouting in time with punches and they wear MMA type mits to do the session in. Why??? It's non contact, why wear mits?! Just for attention? It's putting me off going because I end up just getting annoyed with these women! Just no need for the OTT shit surely?

They aren’t showing off, they’re doing what they do to to enjoy the session and get the most for themselves. Just pay attention to your own body and not wht anyone else is doing...

I'm all for people enjoying their workout but the thing about fitness classes is that they're with others, some consideration is needed

Disagree. These Les Mills type classes are intended to be group experiences. It's absolutely fine to want to stand at the back, lack confidence, ability, fitness, whatever....but a whole class full of that type of person makes for a soul less mass experience. I've been there. The whole room lacks energy, the class needs those people at the front to get the room going, push people to try harder etc..I also know it makes the instructors job a lot easier too.

you do your thing and let them do theres.

Dipitydoda · 14/03/2018 08:55

@fruitcocktail6 wondering whether you go to my gym where every class starts like this😂.

IME every class has the people there who like to make it clear they’re the experts, oh so pally with the instructor, the class as it stands isn’t quite hard enough for them. They generally have plenty of free time to turn up early leave late. Then there’s the work horses who have been going a while, turn up do the job, exit without fuss as time is limited and they have just about managed to squeeze in a class. Then there’s my natural grouping, the people going left when everyone else goes right, laughing at how uncoordinated they are. Op accept the natural groups, give yourself a giggle (and the odd eye roll)

Moominfan · 14/03/2018 09:01

Try a real boxing class maybe? Ones I've been to people are down to earth and it comes chant free :)

BusterTheBulldog · 14/03/2018 09:03

I wonder if I go to your gym op?! Wink I am a stand at the front, jump as high as poss, shout when encouraged type. Mainly as I LOVE combat and attack (slink to the back for pump and cx).

People that are out of time, don’t punch properly and have zero interest in technique annoy me, but y’know I don’t let it get to me as presumably we’re all there cos we enjoy the class and want to get better.

Much prefer a bit of energy to a class full of nothingness.

thismeansnothing · 14/03/2018 09:09

Sorry I was one of those members who wore wraps. But that was because I found myself holding a fist so tense I was hurting my hand by digging my nails in so hard. It was prevention more than showing off.

cucaracha · 14/03/2018 09:13

You are your own problem, not them.

I can't see anything wrong with anyone being enthusiastic and making the most of a session. For all you know, they are doing the class as a top up, but also practice real martial arts and are just used to their mits.

Your post screams of jealousy and insecurity. If you were working harder, you wouldn't have time or energy to notice them.

heron98 · 14/03/2018 09:35

I sometimes worry people think this about me.

I go to spin class and work really hard because I race mountain bikes and it really helps my fitness.

I feel like other people in the class are just pedalling and chatting and that they look at me and think I'm a twat.

But I am there to do the class, so I give it my all. And I am not a twat, honest!

PaperdollCartoon · 14/03/2018 09:40

Yes I know what you mean, I’ve found it the worst in Zumba out of all classes though (haven’t done that in a while!)

But I’ve work little fitness gloves in classes like this before and it’s definitely not showing off, I sweat A LOT and there’s no hope of doing a push up on a slippy gym floor without gloves more than 2 minutes into a class like that. Also bear in mind that if someone’s been going to the class a long time they’ll be getting fitter and need to push harder to get a good work out. Those classes are for all levels. I’m generally in the ‘just worry about yourself’ camp.

PaperdollCartoon · 14/03/2018 09:40

cucaracha · 14/03/2018 09:41

some people use the gym as a social club, some believe that turning up to a body combat mean they do martial arts, others are there for a proper workout.

As long as no one prevents you from exercising, what's the big deal? If you are that jealous about others, just work harder and catch up.

OutyMcOutface · 14/03/2018 09:42

I’m going to go very much against the grain it would seem and say YANBU. Even if the glove are weighted they could just wear wrist weights instead of looking like twats. Obviously some workouts can benefit from a bit of weird animal noises as someone pointed out above but there is a different between verbal participation for the sake of your abs and verbal participation for the sake of attention. I suspect you wouldn’t be so annoyed unless it is the latter. And obviously loud chatter can never be a excused under any circumstances.

OutyMcOutface · 14/03/2018 09:48

Oh, and for those of you who think the you are doing the rest of us a favour by ‘bringing some energy’ you really aren’t. You are actually making it difficult to concentrate with all the yelling and exaggerated movements. When I go to a gym class I want a work out, not a sensory overload.

TakeThatFuckingDressOffNow · 14/03/2018 09:48

YANBU - no one likes a show off, it’s like being back at school.

Look at me everyone, I’m the BESTEST at PE...

Reminds me of the don’t look at me I’m shy sketch.

NathusiusPip · 14/03/2018 09:56

To veer off topic slightly... why do people go to a 'body combat' gym class instead of going to an actual martial arts/kickboxing/boxing class? Surely if you're going to get all sweaty pretending to punch things, it'd be more useful to learn to do it properly and learn some self defence?

BusterTheBulldog · 14/03/2018 10:03

I’m not doing exaggerated movements, just doing them correctly Wink and having been in classes where everyone is half hearted, chatty and doesn’t try I’d much rather be an energetic person.

nathusius - i go to combat because the structure of it means I have to concentrate and work hard, but not engage with anyone if that makes sense? I don’t want to learn a specific skill or self defence in those classes I just want a good all over workout. They are part of my overall fitness plan and I just don’t have the inclination to sign up to do a course on anything like that. I have other fitness goals so no time (or being honest, inclination!)

SillyLittleBiscuit · 14/03/2018 10:17

I'm pretty shy/worried about looking daft so skulk away at the back of the room trying not to bring attention to myself. Secretly jealous of everyone who doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks of them. They're clearly enjoying themselves more than me.

BusterTheBulldog · 14/03/2018 10:21

Just go for it sillylittlebiscuit! 2 tracks in and everyone is too busy concentrating on themselves anyway!

cucaracha · 14/03/2018 11:02

why do people go to a 'body combat' gym class instead of going to an actual martial arts/kickboxing/boxing class?

sh..... so many people think it is an actual martial art class and they are learning fighting skills! Grin

(disclaimer: of course it doesn't apply to anyone, others do it because it's fun, it's part of their gym membership and it's as good a workout as any)

IMightMentionGriddlebone · 14/03/2018 11:04

Actually, I think the point about energy is a good one. When I attend fitness classes and any individual session has been predominanted by the quieter, less vocally enthusiastic set, I notice we all get slower, and slooower, and at the end, we've got much less out of it than usual.

On the other hand, zero interest in technique at body combat classes? Er, so that would be everyone then, wouldn't it. I've been to body combat. Fun work-out, great format for group exercise, and generally a great development in the fitness world. I like it. However, punching the air in time to music is not how you develop technique.

SoupDragon · 14/03/2018 11:20

no one likes a show off

When does giving something your all become “showing off”

Trinity66 · 14/03/2018 11:23

It's really your problem, in martial arts you're supposed to be high energy and shout.

AnythingGoez · 14/03/2018 11:31

Haha I'm actually a black belt in karate, you know, real martial arts! Unfortunately I can only get there once a week so do body Combat to keep my fitness levels up.

I'm glad some of you agree with me. The gloves are not weighted, they're little MMA mits and these people stand at the front pretending to be Conor McGregor, making a racket and looking like twats. Just no need!!
