To get irritated by show off women at the gym?

AnythingGoez · 13/03/2018 23:25

I do body Attack. Every session there are 4 or 5 women who stand at the front chanting loudly, shouting in time with punches and they wear MMA type mits to do the session in. Why??? It's non contact, why wear mits?! Just for attention? It's putting me off going because I end up just getting annoyed with these women! Just no need for the OTT shit surely?

Oh and then we have the freaks that decide to start doing yoga in the bleeding sauna/steam room. Fuck off and do it somewhere private, nobody else is interested in your attention seeking!!

Haha I'm actually a black belt in karate, you know, real martial arts!

Yes so is my son and they're encouraged to Kiai during those classes so you'd think you'd be used to it since you're a black belt aswell Grin

Kitsharrington · 14/03/2018 11:37

Why do you assume they are showing off? More likely they are just enjoying themselves and don't care what you or anyone else thinks.

IMightMentionGriddlebone · 14/03/2018 11:41

Trinity What, all of the punches? Grin

AnythingGoez · 14/03/2018 11:41

Kiai is fine if it's for a reason - to do it just to show off and seek attention is ridiculous!

It just sounds like they're getting into to it and having fun tbh

ShowOfHands · 14/03/2018 11:43

This is why I can't go to fitness classes. I find other people distracting. When I work out, I'm facing my own demons and the whooping, hollering and gurning faces are the ultimate distraction. It works for them clearly, so I vote with my feet.

Not as bad as trying to do free weights and men with poor form trying to spot for me or offering incorrect advice though.

I'm happier at home.

DammitPatrice · 14/03/2018 11:46

There's a couple of men who go to my local gym who seem to make as much noise as possible on weights and the treadmill so you know just how hard they're pushing themselves.

They end up sounding like a distressed cow stuck in gutter.

SaucyJack · 14/03/2018 11:53

"Haha I'm actually a black belt in karate,"

Oh sweetheart, you're starting to sound like Gareth from The Office now.

of course you are so you are pretty fit, but you can't concentrate on a workout because of other women? Why don't you just go at the front and concentrate on your own business?

JustGettingStarted · 14/03/2018 11:55

I don't understand why women are so big on doing classes, full stop. Is it because they prefer group activities? Or because they're bored of machines but are intimidated by free weights?

My close friend does probably 9 different classes a week (often two a day.) She does have overall fitness but I don't get it. I'd rather go when I want to and do what I want to.

Trinity66 · 14/03/2018 11:58

Personally i think anyone who's making any kind of effort to keep fit and do classes or go for a run etc, should be encouraged not mocked or judged.

Shadow666 · 14/03/2018 12:00

Classes can be fun. I really enjoyed doing them.

cucaracha · 14/03/2018 12:03

I don't understand why women are so big on doing classes, full stop.

because it's easier to get motivated, because you push yourself more, because you just have to follow the class instead of designing your own program, because you pay for a monthly fee that includes everything, and it's fun to follow the music.

I very rarely go to the gym, but I can understand the attraction. My personal issue with classes is that I don't see if I am making any progress.

JustGettingStarted · 14/03/2018 12:08

Yeah, I get the external motivation thing. Although I was in the military and I have had enough "external motivation" for the rest of my life, thank you.

Tracking my progress is what motivates me. I like to see if I can lift a little bit more weight or one more rep... Or run a little bit further or faster.

loveka · 14/03/2018 12:10

I wish I could stop being irritated by people at the gym. I honestly do.

There is awoman who goes to my Zumba class who drives me to distraction. She gazesxat herself in the mirror, making eye contact with herself and pouting. She overdoes all the moves, bouncing around like a gazelle. When you have to kick, she kicks her height, leaping up as she does so. The the thing is like she is auditioning for a West End show.

She stood next to me on Saturday, and I had to really grit my teeth.

All the people who say "concentrate on yourself" please tell me how to do that, because I know I am ruining it for myself!

Trinity66 · 14/03/2018 12:10

Same here, I prefer a run on the tread mill or a hike but each to their own

PoorYorick · 14/03/2018 12:16

I enjoy classes. The moves and music are always changing and fresh and I have to commit to the full hour, so no skulking off early.

Haha I'm actually a black belt in karate

Then you should know about discipline, focus and respect, and the other women in the class shouldn't bother you.

to do it just to show off and seek attention is ridiculous!

See, this is MN (and, to be fair, real life) all over. You have no idea what these women's motivations are. If I saw them, I might think they looked a bit silly but I'd assume they were doing it because they were really into it and enjoying themselves. You have no idea what's going on in their heads, but there's a narrative you want to fit them in, so you just make up their thought processes for them and decide that they are inferior human beings.

The only actual facts you have are that these women do the class, they use ineffectual equipment and they exclaim while they punch (something I've been encouraged to do in every boxercise class I've done and some Zumba ones). You can believe they're just 'attention seeking' if you like, but don't pretend it's anything other than what you want to think.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 14/03/2018 12:16

I don't mind Combat show-offs as much as Attack show-offs. Some of these things don't have any impact on me, they're just annoying - but some do spoil it.

In track 6, when the instructor has repeatedly said, every week 'faster runners on the outside' they go in the middle and run tiny circles so it seems like they've lapped everyone, which pushes everyone else out further and means you can't over-take. (spoils it)

OR they weave in and out and cut you up. Because if you're not a dick about it, how will everyone know how fucking fast you are? (spoils it)

They stand there skipping before class, so we know. (just annoying)

They do tucks when it's not supposed to be a tuck so we know.(just annoying)

They jump up and down when everyone's wheezing after track 9 so we know. (just annoying)

When it's a three step run, they hurtle back and forth out of time with the track, which is off-putting if they're in front of you and visibly confuses anyone new to the class. (spoils it)

Whereas in Combat, I'm fine with people going extra-punchy, or getting carried away with the running-man move: that's just kind of cute. And Pump show-offs with loads of weights - that's their business.

userofthiswebsite · 14/03/2018 12:18

Heehee this is why in 4 years of gym membership I have never ever done a class. Always workout alone or with PT.

PoorYorick · 14/03/2018 12:22

Seek, see, if I saw those people I wouldn't assume they were showing off I would honestly just think they were a bit overenthusiastic, or possibly a bit thick.

they go in the middle and run tiny circles so it seems like they've lapped everyone

Nobody is stupid enough to believe that you've covered more ground when you run on the inside. Nobody is stupid enough to think anyone else believes it. I'd assume they wanted to work at a lower level and didn't really care if everyone knew it.

OR they weave in and out and cut you up. Because if you're not a dick about it, how will everyone know how fucking fast you are? (spoils it)

No, just not very good at staying in a straight line, like lane drifters in cars. Thick, nothing more.

They stand there skipping before class, so we know. (just annoying)

How on earth have you decided that's their motivation? Perhaps they just want to work a bit while they wait?

They do tucks when it's not supposed to be a tuck so we know.(just annoying)

Then they're either thick, or don't care that people think they're thick!

They jump up and down when everyone's wheezing after track 9 so we know. (just annoying)

What, they have to work to a lower level than they want to just because you're out of breath? Dafuq? Why do you assume it's all about you? Can they even see you?

When it's a three step run, they hurtle back and forth out of time with the track

Thick! And no rhythm!

Honestly! They're either at a higher fitness level and want to work a bit harder, or they're a bit overenthusiastic, or they're just thick! Why all the accusations of malice???

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 14/03/2018 12:26

They definitely don't want to work at a lower level! You're right, it's thick, but it's definitely not that.

I did try to say that some things are just irritating - because they're very perfomative, I guess - I didn't for a moment suggest anyone should pretend to be less fit than they are: it doesn't spoil anything (as I've said), but there's something about the ostentatiousness of it that's mildly annoying.

Being deliberately out of time or in the wrong place, however, is quite inconsiderate.

It's kind of funny that you're saying I have made 'accusations of malice' though - because I haven't - whilst you have repeatedly said they're thick!

BusterTheBulldog · 14/03/2018 12:26

imight ok, by ‘technique’ I mean knowing the difference from an upper and a hook or a roundhouse and a side kick - obviously I’m not suggesting I’m on my way to being a martial arts expert.

Our gym is the opposite seek slower runners are encouraged to go inside but stick resolutely in the outside, it feels wrong to undertake given we’ve been told to go slower on inside so I High knees run instead-another area i suspect I’m seen as ‘showing off’ I guess.

You can do classes and other stuff you know? I mix up between outdoor running (25miles a week) and weights. I don’t know why threads on gym classes descend into ‘classes are shit anyway’ type views.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 14/03/2018 12:28

I am under no illusions that I could win a fight out of a paper bag as a consequence of doing Combat! I just enjoy it and find it quite good at stress-busting. It's not quite as good a work out as Attack, which I also like, but it's more fun.

PoorYorick · 14/03/2018 12:33

It's kind of funny that you're saying I have made 'accusations of malice' though - because I haven't - whilst you have repeatedly said they're thick!

Being thick is not malicious. Being attention seeking is...well, perhaps 'malicious' is too strong a word, but it's not well intentioned. Being thick, however, is not an intention at all.

A wise person once told me never to attribute something to malice if it was more likely to be attributed to just being thick.

Being deliberately out of time or in the wrong place, however, is quite inconsiderate.

But again, you're assuming it's deliberate when you don't know anything about their thought processes. In my experience, most people don't like appearing to have no rhythm or co-ordination. So if they're continually out of time with the track, I wouldn't assume attention seeking (and why is this such a crime on MN anyway?), I would assume....thick!
