To wonder why MNers are so obsessed with Brexit now?

I used to post on MN before the referendum and I saw very little discussion about Brexit in AIBU (although I think a lot of threads started in AIBU were moved to the EU Referendum topic).

In the EU Referendum topic traffic was fairly slow and there were just a few posters battling it out time and time again. A few posters on the leave side were, in my view, 99% likely to be paid trolls, who all disappeared immediately after the referendum.

Since the referendum the subject really seems to have picked up steam and there seem to be loads of people getting really worked up about how Brexit is a disaster and the country is going to the dogs.

AIBU to wonder where all these people were before, and why they weren’t all shouting from the rooftops when there was still a chance to change the result?

Confused

Actually it's more a case of rabid bitter remainers seizing on any poster who may not even be a leaver but dares to say something positive about leaving then like piranhas you all start demanding answers, reasons... Whys

Gosh you're so right, how dare they want reasons and whys when all they get is "it'll be fine, we won. everything is going to be great!"
They never know how, they never can say why. Just repeated accusations of being hysterical because you actually care about what is happening.

I was looking at the posts on the EU Referendum board only the other day, went right back to threads started way before the vote.
I would say they were overwhelmingly pro Remain, so I really cannot let the allegation that Leave posts were peppered by "professionals" go by without voicing my dissent.

The other thing that has occurred to me is that many, many times it has been pointed out that older people tended to vote Leave. So how likely is it that Mumsnet Leaver "Bots" have influenced their votes?

(If my posting style is somewhat stilted I am sorry but I've had 1/2 bottle of Vodka Hmm tonight as I will be 60 tomorrow so am a bit Shock)

I posted quite a bit before the referendum. I was and am pro-Brexit. I was also wrongly accused of being a paid troll who "disappeared after the referendum". Actually I expect most of us just name changed.

I posted on several threads in the run-up to the referendum (I have changed names a couple of times since then). There was one very prolific and vocal poster who posted in favour of leave on virtually every referendum thread. Their posts were always written in a particular style and at great length. I remember them specifically because I had a couple of vocal tussles with them. I remember feeling a little suspicious that they disappeared literally they day after the referendum. It was perfectly possible they just changed names of course, but after all that time spent arguing in favour of leave I was surprised that there didn't seem to be even one post discussing the result.

As for why there are more threads now, I think as the leaving date approaches, serious issues are brought up that spark debate, that affect people's lives. As these issues have been discussed in the media, threads pop up on Mumsnet, albeit a little late in the day. I'm thinking particularly of threads about the Irish border. The difficulties around this were definitely raised pre-referendum, but not given nearly enough media coverage.

There was one called springingintoaction and one called daisy-something. Both I suspect were paid trolls.

I remember you A4Document - never thought you were a troll. You posted like a real person. You said some properly idiotic stuff, but you were clearly genuine.

There were/are plenty of lefite leave voters.

whywhywhywhywhyyy · 15/03/2018 19:38

It is one of the biggest political changes our country will go through in decades. Plus people are shit at arguing but love it.

Leaver: Until I walk into this fire, I won't know if it actually burns! Despite all analysis saying it will burn, I won't know until I try!

Remainer: THE EU IS GOING TO HATE US AND NOBODY WILL TRADE WITH US AND WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE

ALittleAubergine · 15/03/2018 19:40

I'm mostly resigned to brexit now. No other way to put it. Just wish more capable people (cross party!!!!) were in charge of it. It's way too big to be in hands of just one party.

I wonder whether any of our prominent pro brexit politicians are in the pay of the Russian government and if so who.

LeighaJ · 15/03/2018 22:19

Maybe because news are obsessed with it whereas the average person seems a bit worn out and feeling meh nowadays. Where I live at least.

Echobelly · 15/03/2018 22:28

I think a lot of remain people were 'shouting from the rooftops' before the vote, but were shouted down as 'fearmongers' and in many ways people did take the wrong tack and misunderstand why people were voting leave, which was not always because they were 'stupid' or 'xenophobic/racist' but because they saw a chance to take, as they saw it, some power, but like frankly most of us had no real understanding of the EU and how it works. I know I didn't, so I voted remain not least because I had no idea what the alternative would mean.

I think London and major cities will get through Brexit reasonably OK. I think other places, mostly those that largely voted out, will be more screwed than ever, eg rural areas that have actually relied on EU funding subsidising them. I think the economy might even be relatively all right, but ordinary people will all be hit by much higher costs.

I just wish the government would admit it is utterly impracticable, no one who has seriously looked into it foresees any positive outcome for the UK. The gov should stop the Brexit process and instead promise heavy investment in all the areas that voted leave so the real issues in those areas can be ameliorated.

And that is what I am bothered about it.

Clarissalarissa · 15/03/2018 23:12

The Germans have learned from WWII. Before the Referendum, I did feel a bit uneasy about the never-ending obsession with Britain defeating the Nazis. Now I realise that it was much more damaging than I thought - leading to an unwarranted sense of superiority/specialness, and contributing to the current disaster.
We are in very deep trouble because of Brexit. And it is really just for the sake of a few extreme right-wingers, isn't it?
