AIBU to think Yorkshire Police are a shit show?

The recent investigation by WY police regarding comments made on twitter (non threatening and not racially motivated) has prompted me to think about my own involvement with them and the publicised screw ups they have made over the years.

Without researching, what comes to mind is:

Yorkshire Ripper.
So many missed chances. More women murdered.
Womens concerns/alerts dismissed because they were prostitues.

Hillsborough.
Failure to manage the crowd then blame planted at the fans door.

Jimmy Saville.
They knew.
So many raised concerns.
They ignored.
For 30 plus years

Rotherham.
Concerns were raised.
People were silenced.
So many girls became victims when the police should have protected them.

I am sure there are more Angry

My own experience was aged 19 beat up by my bf.
Got home and called the police.
4 hours later I was visited.
Female officer refused to write down my statement as I had been drinking. I had but the beating lasted 2 hours before I escaped and I was very sober by then. She also said it was a waste as I would only go back to him. He had never hit me before and I had no involvement with the police prior to this.
No photos taken of my busted lips, nose or black eye.
A week later I was contacted by a detective who wanted to interview me. They had arrested him the night before for a fight in Leeds. When they charged him my complaint showed up.
They came to my work and interviewed me for 3 hours.

He was charged with the fight and my evidence helped but he was never charged with my assault. That was forgotten. Not seen as important. He was given 3 months for fighting over football. I never heard a thing from them.

I have no trust at all in Yorkshire police and feel they need to be investigated.

AIBU?

Why? Because I won't join in with some Ill thought out post slating a police force?

Because im not blindly agreeing with you?

No none of those reasons.
You dont seem happy with my post and you dont agree with it.
I thought once you had made your point you would leave.
You haven't and instead it seems hou want to pick a fight with me.

I'm not interested. Sorry.

I appreciate the police and the work they do. I just think if a force has failed in the way Yorks police has then maybe they have not learned lessons?

I dont know I am just some dummy on mumsnet posting the random thoughts in my head. Doesnt make me right it just made me ask the question.

CosmicCanary · 13/03/2018 20:30

and accepttheirversion of events. It doesn't work like that.

I had the shit kicked out of me.
I gave a statement which was not recorded through bloody lips and a smashed nose but yeah it was just my version of events Hmm

How rude to respond with "yawn". Someone has just posted about their assault and how the police ignored it. Unbelievable.

So frawater, are you suggesting the should allow child abuse to continue?

BigMamaFratelli · 13/03/2018 20:39

I work with wyp and syp and although I've come across some fantastic officers, sadly I have to agree with the op that the majority are a shit show.
I don't think the op gave a great set of examples, but I'll be honest and say I'd be in no rush to call either police force if the need arose.

CosmicCanary · 13/03/2018 20:39

Fra can you explain your post....I am not sure I quite understand your point?

Fra I don’t really know what you’re on about but they aren’t mutually exclusive.

There’s loads of work being done on CSE.

Fra please be mindful of what your saying.
My thread is not about 1 case or 1 force as such.

Please dont post in a way that will get my thread deletd.

Right. You’re coming across a bit racist now.

NC4Now · 13/03/2018 20:57

Fra posting racist or anti muslim stuff US wrong and should be taken seriously by the police.

The handling of Rotherham was also wrong.

Those 2 things are not the same.
Please stop trying to blurr the lines because it suites your agenda.

I've got mates who are Police Officers. I hope they're better than the ones who interviewed me when I was assaulted, who smirked at me, interviewed me in a cold room and didn't offer me a drink. They came to my house to tell me my sexual assault was my word against the guy who did it and they wouldn't even be interviewing him.

A bit of my soul died with that tbh as it was another Police Officer who'd encouraged me to report it, when I went to rape crisis, but because it happened in another borough I had to report it to those police who were horrible.

OP I believe you.

CosmicCanary · 13/03/2018 21:05

Han I am so sorry.
I know we are strangers but ❤

This happened to me in 1995. I want to believe its better now but I dont think it is.

My only positive experience with yorkshire police was when I was a witness giving evidence against an assault on a police officer. As a victim, totally different story. Funny that.

CosmicCanary · 13/03/2018 21:18

A family member of mine lost an historic child sex abuse case against her father under WYP.
They decide 2 very key witnesses who had already given written statements did not need to be called to court.
He had 5 witnesses over 3 days she had nobody called but her mum.
The jury cleared him.
She was 19 at the time and they promised to look after her.

OP posts:
HyenaHappy · 13/03/2018 21:20

The police don’t decide which witnesses get called to court.

Forevertired19 · 13/03/2018 21:22

I... I don't like police men.
DP's uncle is a police man and he loves his job. Its always been his dream and honestly. He's lovely and I can't understand how he does it. Within the first 2 years he has numerous certificates under his belt.
But every single police situation I've delt with has been horrible and cold.
My db committed suicide and the first attempt, they came in and blamed my mom and accused her of drugging him. Which she didn't do.
Then when he did succeed, police failed to inform us for... 5 hours. I even sent him a text thinking he would reply and he didn't. The policemen came to our door and we knew it was my brother. We were at the door screaming at them to tell us if he was okay. But they ushered us in, sat down and had a look round before saying anything to us about what had happened.

My DP's grans partner attempted to hit them and attack them all and the police took 7 hours to arrive to sort out their situation with a very dangerous man. Even then they didn't do much.

It's a shame because police are so pushed for numbers. I guess the insensitivity that comes across is because they have to harden up for it. But I salute their work ethic. Especially as I know DP's uncle has been stabbed numerous times, bitten etc. It's a hard job.
But I just think it's how pushed they are and it'll only get worse

coconuttella · 13/03/2018 21:25

YABU

You had a very bad experience, and bad mistakes have been made by some over the decades, but that doesn’t mean all the police forces currently in Yorkshire are a ‘shit show’.

HopefullyAnonymous · 13/03/2018 21:31

Just two points I’d like to address. Firstly, we can’t take statements when people have been drinking as it’s just not best practice and would be torn apart in court by the defence as being unreliable. Secondly, we don’t choose which witnesses get called to court.

I can’t make excuses for the failings of other officers; we should always be doing our best. Most officers do. We are limited in terms of officers, funding, equipment and time. The CPS decide which cases to progress, not us.

Our training alone is gruelling and the job is draining in ways you can’t imagine. No officers I know would ever deliberately do a shit job (I’m sure they do exist!). We are all trying.
