Do boys say "I love you" to platonic female friends?

Just wondering about this (and exercising my natural curiosity as a nosy mother), because my DS (nearly 14) has some female friends which he says aren't girlfriends, but he ends his phone-calls to at least one of them with "bye, love you". I know girls sometimes do that with their platonic girlfriends these days, but is it a thing with boys too?

When I was a teenager we all said that, not anymore.

I'm not a boy btw but boys I was friends with did.

crazycadetmum · 13/03/2018 17:20

My son does this, he says it to his male friends too...he’s 20 btw.

DietCokeGirrrrrl · 13/03/2018 17:22

Yeah, when I was a teenager this was common

FittonTower · 13/03/2018 17:22

I've always had lots of male friends and some said it to me platonically. My best friend still does, and i love him too - he is awesome.

ConstantReminder · 13/03/2018 17:30

Yes some do. It seems guts today are more comfortable expressing emotions like that ~ and more comfortable with platonic friendships. Great, isn’t it?

frasier · 13/03/2018 17:32

Yes, everybody loves everybody else (babe grl, bae) in my niece and nephews friendship group!

SundaySalon · 13/03/2018 17:35

My male friends used to do this when I was a teenager. I used to do it out of habit I said it so much to my parents and siblings that it kind of slipped out with friends.

ConstantReminder · 13/03/2018 17:37

guys not guts (sorry)

MyRelationshipIsWeird · 13/03/2018 17:39

I think “love you bye” is a thing now. I’ve heard DJs on radio one say it to callers, and my DS1 has male friends who text that to him! So yes, boys do say it to all sorts of people.

DownAtFraggleRock · 13/03/2018 17:41

All the lads do it to each other when they get off the bus I travel home on in the afternoon...

I think it's ironic

HonkyWonkWoman · 13/03/2018 17:41

It's very common for people to end phone conversations with love u
where I come from.

Chienrouge · 13/03/2018 17:44

Yes, they definitely do (in my experience)

Luckyaide · 13/03/2018 17:54

Yep.

Darknessinthevalley · 13/03/2018 17:55

Definitely as teenagers. Even now if I see my best mate we say it as we say goodbye. It certainly doesn't mean anything. I do love him, he's great!

AnyFucker · 13/03/2018 17:58

Yeah

youokayhun · 13/03/2018 17:58

I'm 31 and some of my partners friends always end calls to both me and him with "love you, bye" as well as to our faces. I actually think it's nice for good friends to express themselves like that but just what I'm used to.
