WingsOnMyBoots · 13/03/2018 10:05

I'm sorry I feel like a moan today. I am so sick of hearing people referring to clothes as PIECES! They do it with jewellery as well. It's not 'trousers' or 'dresses' or 'cardigans' it's PIECES!! Does anyone else hate this???

Colour block? No it's just an item of clothing which doesn't have fancy patterns on it.

TipsNotHacks · 13/03/2018 12:16

I was thinking this during one of my mammoth time wasting YouTube sessions - daft blogger girl prattling on about the "pieces" she'd "curated" for "this seasons edit". It was all sorts of bog standard ordinary shite from Topshop, RI, Zara etc. Yawn.

Dandellion · 13/03/2018 12:17

It doesn't bother me one bit that my interest in fashion can be considered superficial. Do we all have to be dour all the time then, and have terribly worthy interests?

It's just fashion. Doesn't matter if it, and the language used to describe it, is superficial.

SummerRoberts · 13/03/2018 12:21

I hate source too. As in "I need to source a yellow cashmere jumper" or "I sourced this beautiful piece recently"
You didn't!!! You bought it!!!!

Ketzele · 13/03/2018 12:25

I think flats that belong to posh people are now 'apartments', aren't they? That's what I've gleaned from my posh interiors magazines. And they never have holiday homes - their magnificent rural piles are always described with euphemisms like, 'their retreat from busy lives' or 'the family bolthole'. Which makes one realise that there must be 'another property' somewhere - probably Mayfair.

LimonViola · 13/03/2018 12:30

Dandellion

Superficial wasn't intended as an insult, sorry if it came across that way.

I just mean that the clothes we wear are, for most people, a very superficial thing. Few people put lots of time and energy into 'curating' their wardrobe and choosing 'pieces'.

Using phrases like 'piece' just makes me think of someone into fashion trying to make it sound like art in a fancy gallery!

I also have some 'superficial' interests, makeup/beauty definitely being one. But it's just a red lipstick. Doesn't need to be a 'statement lip'.

Sahara123 · 13/03/2018 12:48

A few years ago I wanted to strangle Susanna whatshername on This Morning referring to a jean or a trouser. She then wanted to team something with a black tight ...... My teeth hurt

NextIndia · 13/03/2018 12:51

Yes, to all of the above, yes! Wankery of the highest order.

maryfrommaryville · 13/03/2018 12:52

Curate their small batch, artisanal pieces. Envy

WingsOnMyBoots · 13/03/2018 12:52

Arrggggh! STATEMENT PIECES!!! 'SPACES'!! 'POP OF COLOUR'!!!

I swear I am determined NEVER to speak like this!

Another one I hate it 'let's UNPACK this' instead of 'explain'. Shut up.

YANBU, @WingsOnMyBoots - and I was coming onto the thread to mention spaces too. I am sure that people who wear 'pieces' have 'spaces' in their homes, not rooms.

FriedEggs1 · 13/03/2018 13:07

Sahara123 That's what I mean. This kind of knobbery makes me want to throw something heavy and hard

JaneJeffer · 13/03/2018 13:21

Rousette that's hilarious, the look on John Torode's face Grin

Sweetpea55 · 13/03/2018 13:36

Pop of colour,,,,what the hell is that all about...And ' pieces'..and 'trouser ' whats wrong with trousers..

Wankyness in the extreme

Luckyme2 · 13/03/2018 13:52

Sorry to detract from the thread but Rousette that clip is hilarious! 'And a cherry.' Grin

Ketzele · 13/03/2018 13:54

Oh, how could I have forgotten: 'hero' pieces? Meaning that every 'space' has to have a 'hero' i.e. a 'hero cushion' that adds a 'pop' of colour, or a 'hero chair' that is a 'statement'.

Swissgemma · 13/03/2018 14:08

The apartment/flat distinction is amusing... I own a riverside "property" in London. in a nice block. When I bought in the late 90s it was a dodgy area what I bought was a flat... all the signs in the building directed you to the correct lifts to get to the various flats. My DM used to shudder and say "apartment" you mean "apartment". I really didn't, apartment to me means a cheep and cheerful holiday! Recently however, they have redecorated the communal areas and I seem to reside in a desirable riverside residence in an apartment. Hmmmm

Herbalteahippie · 13/03/2018 17:04

YANBU. I hate it when a room is referred to as ‘space’. I feel ya x

Herbalteahippie · 13/03/2018 17:06

"Do you all get annoyed when chefs or dancers use specific terms or phrases related to cooking or dancing? Is that 'pretentious' and 'wanky' too?"

Well I don't know about dancing. But I can happily move onto cooking wankery.

I will start with:
Artisan
Lovingly crafted
Drizzled

iklboo · 13/03/2018 17:15

I remember an interview with KT Tunstall saying she'd been clothes shopping in a fancy place and as she was leaving the woman called after her 'don't forget your pieces madam' - and she was confused as 'pieces' is used in some parts of Scotland to mean 'sandwiches' and she knew she hadn't bought any food Grin.

BertieBotts · 13/03/2018 17:18

Grin I love this thread.

Fine in high fashion (probably - I'll never own anything high fashion, so I don't care). Not for ordinary clothing.

Hate pop of colour/makes something pop. "Brings out the colour of your eyes" worked fine, why did they change it??

Battleax · 13/03/2018 17:20

I'm with you totally OP. How about making clothes singular? When did this start? Trouser, legging etc.

Same with make up; “a smoky eye”, “a berry lip” etc, ad if it’s just the one.

Crazyladee · 13/03/2018 17:47

Oh I hear you OP.

But after watching Masterchef year after year, there is one saying they constantly use that gives me the rage..

"Plate of Food"

Why?? Why not just...food? Or Dish? "He is going to create an amazing Plate of Food"

All the professionals use it and I really don't get it!!!!

CaptainCardamom · 13/03/2018 18:05

The food one that drives me nuts is "bake" as a noun... I like GGBO but cringe every time one of them goes "I've been really proud of my bakes today" aarrrggh! It was never used like that before. Why have they all adopted it as if it's perfectly normal?
