To think this buyer is being totally and utterly unreasonable?

I am so stressed about this I don't know what to do - and I now feel powerless until tomorrow at least.

We are selling a house having already moved over 100 miles away. That's been a nightmare in itself, but we are/were finally due to complete tomorrow. Just a couple of hours ago I had a phone call from the agent to say the buyer has been round today and seen 'a load of rubbish' in the garden. This is bollocks anyway - there's a table and chairs, which, while not new, are not rubbish and are perfectly usable, and a few pots. Nothing has been said before about them wanting it cleared but now they're saying they won't complete while it's there.

Me and dh have work tomorrow and can't take leave at this notice and there's no one else to ask. We are absolutely on the bones of our arse at the moment and desperately need the money from this sale. I can't stand for it to all fall through now. Can they do this? I'm not UR am I - if they had said a couple of months ago when they put the offer in they wanted it cleared we would easily have got it done by now, but we haven't got a magic wand to sort it now.

You have to clear a property completely, otherwise you have to list it on the fixtures & fittings list. What is good stuff to you is Other People’s Rubbish to them.

If you’ve exchanged contracts, surely it’ll cost them money to not complete tomorrow.

You are being unreasonable. Vacant possession means nothing left at the property. You need to remove your stuff.

Is the garden locked? If not you could hire a van or put it on the local Fb page and gumtree as free to collector.

Make a freecycle post saying "in garden, available for collection asap" and someone will be happy to rehome them!

I'm afraid yabu. Do you have a community Facebook page for where the old house is? I would post on there that the stuff is all free to collector and hope it goes.

I’m sorry but you are being a bit unreasonable.

When you buy a house you generally buy with vacant possession. I would assume all furniture would be taken including garden furniture and I’d be bringing my own stuff with me. They may have a full set of garden furniture they want space for and don’t see why they have to pay to have your stuff removed.

I wouldn’t halt completion over it (and I think there’d be severe financial penalties for them if they did) but it’s not unreasonable for them to want the items gone at your expense.

Can you ask your old neighbour if they could possibly move it in to their garden and you go up at the weekend to dump it. (Nice neighbours may even offer to do it for you).

Yes post on gumtree/freecycle, if not start ringing man&van type outfits and ask for their fee to take it away/keep it/take to tip (which however can be awkward if you are a van driver).

If they don't complete on the agreed date, I think they forfeit their deposit. Hopefully someone who actually knows will be along in a minute.

Nope. They are perfectly reasonable. If they have their own table and chairs they want to put in the garden then why should they have to pay to shift yours first? YABU.

Every single rented property I've moved into has had numerous amounts of others peoples crap that were left as they were 'perfectly usable'.

It's not their problem you've moved far away and it's not convenient for you.

If I bought a house, I wouldn't want other people's crap left in it.

Is there a British Heart shop near your property? They collect if it's good enough for charity. Otherwise you need to pay a local man and van to clear it tomorrow.

Just as it's a,hassle for you get rid of it's also a hassle for them and giving them the expense and faff to get rid of YOUR stuff. You should have cleared the property in and out completely. YABU.

If they don't plan on using it then they're going to have to get rid of it. You should have confirmed with them before you moved if they wanted it.

YABU to think that people might want the old shit you haven't got round to disposing of.

We had the same when we moved into our new home recently, the vendors ended up paying for a skip and the cost of a labourer to fill it with all the crap they left behind.

Assumption is always that you clear it, they should never have to clear that. It is what vacant possession means. I'm sure they won't pull out over it, but it is you that is in the wrong. You could always suggest knocking £100 off the final settlement figure to cover clearance. Or that you will pay once settlement has been made.

Sorry I think you are being unreasonable. I would expect it to have been cleared so wouldn't have mentioned it earlier if I was the buyer as I would have thought it would be gone by now/tomorrow.

I would be annoyed if I had to take some garden furniture to the skip alongside the hassle of moving.

When we moved here they had left a washing machine and hadn’t cut the grass so took 500 off the price. I was gobsmacked, didn’t even expect the grass cut as the last owner had passed away.
