Hi

(I have name changed for this, in case people think it is a ridiculous suggestionBlush)

It’s from a few years ago, but I thought this initiative in Sweden was really interesting:

Sweden invents a word for girls’ genitals equivalent to ‘willy’ for boys

www.theguardian.com/world/2015/aug/01/sweden-girls-genitals-feminist-invention-snippa-vagina

We don’t really have a universal similar word here, and for the same reasons as Sweden, perhaps it’s time we did!

I reckon that if we could agree on a word, that Mumsnet likely has enough reach to get it into common usage.

So, does anyone think it is something we would benefit from, and if so, any suggestions for a term?

(and for avoidance of doubt, I am not actually suggesting unwilly as the term!Grin)

I like foof Grin the word I mean 😂 but it's flower in this house just because that's what I was brought up to call it

LoveB · 12/03/2018 20:58

I don't think of shitting and farting when I think of "bum". I'd think that about anus.

Bums are cute

Dowser · 12/03/2018 20:58

My dad used to call people a big daft fanny.
Not usually to their faces.
Sometimes I still do.
In America, I was a bit startled when a chap referred to my bum bag as a fanny pack. I think he knew I’d be a bit taken aback.. he probably tried it with all British women.
For the boys I’d use tail, can’t remember what I’d say to my daughter.
It certainly wasn’t front bottom.

LoveB · 12/03/2018 21:02

Otherwise, fandango

Whatififall · 12/03/2018 21:06

Bits.
Used for both girl bits and boy bits. DD knows the anatomical terms but they got a bit mangled - Vagina became a china, testicles became tentacles.
She's happy with bits, non-offensive, easy to describe and easy to fit in with the PANTS rule.

UnWilly · 12/03/2018 21:11

So many different words!

How do you read children’s stories with a straight face if you’re calling it a fairy or flower ?

NotBadConsidering · 12/03/2018 21:41

I once saw a baby girl as a patient whose mother had brought her to see me because she was worried about her "red wee". Consultation went something like this:

Mother: I'm worried her wee looks red
Me: ok, so you think her urine is red
Mother: no, her wee.
Me: Confused sorry, do you think she has blood in her urine or nappy?
Mother: No! It's her wee! It looks red and sore!
Me: ConfusedConfused so it hurts her to pee?
Mother: NO! Her wee looks sore. I'll show you: [takes off nappy and shows me a nappy rash] see, her wee looks sore.
Me: Oh, you mean VULVA well why didn't you just fucking say so

So I'm all for correct anatomical terms. Hmm

PrettyWisdomous · 12/03/2018 21:53

Falsepriest and NotBadConsidering both made me laugh out loud!!

We always called it a mini in my house. My friend called it a woo woo!! I don't like Wilma as it's another word that suggests that women are just non-member, like twatty's comment.

PrettyWisdomous · 12/03/2018 21:54

Non-men, even! Autocorrect.

Flockoftreegulls · 12/03/2018 22:05

Vulva is the worst word in the English language. Yuck.

CremeFresh · 12/03/2018 22:11

We used Mini when DD was very little and then we used privates when she got older.

UnWilly · 12/03/2018 22:24

Vulva/vagina are just so very formal. In every day life most people don't call their coller bone their clavicle or their bum their gluteus maximus etc etc so what's wrong with another term for your "privates". .

her wee looks sore

I'm sure we can find something reasonable between the two though

Wilma is my fave so far - a willy & a wilma goes together nicely Grin

(I hate the word vulva, and penis is too clinical).

Stormwhale · 12/03/2018 22:42

Here in Essex most people call it a noonie, or noon for short. It's kind of a short oo sound though.

I call it lady bits.

MilfordFound · 12/03/2018 22:45

I call it my chuff. I like the sound of foof too. Not sure what I'll use with my daughter, she's 3, I should probably decide soon.

ImAGuiderToo · 12/03/2018 22:49

I genuinely can’t remember what we used when the dc were younger - but I do remember mil saying that we should use ‘minge’ for dd1 when we were talking about it.

I’m quite sweary generally but did suggest that perhaps minge might cause offence...Grin

angelikacpickles · 12/03/2018 22:50

Why can’t we all just be rational and use the correct terms? You don’t use euphemisms for your legs or arms - what’s so upsetting about genitals?

No, @Babdoc, nobody ever calls any other part of their body by a non-medical term. Nobody has a tummy or a belly or a belly button or a bum or a pinkie or anything like that.

SleightOfMind · 12/03/2018 22:57

Gah! I rue the fucking day My DTs learned the word penis.
I can’t take them anywhere now. It was fine when they just sniggered about willies.
Think long and hard people, before going the anatomical route.

Wilma sounds like it would work though.
I’ll try it out on DH in the throes tonight Wink

UnWilly · 12/03/2018 23:23

If we go with Wilma, I don't think I could watch the Flintstones ever again!

OP posts:
wheekwheekpiggiefeet · 12/03/2018 23:37

I like the word "minge." I actually learned it on MN after reading an OP entitled "Mooncup Ate My Minge!" I had never fancied a mooncup before reading that thread and now I shudder when anyone mentions the damn things

wheekwheekpiggiefeet · 12/03/2018 23:39

UnWilly I think your username would be a perfect term actually. An Unwilly.

Some people use Minkie but it makes me think of whales (as in minkie whales) LOL.

ApproachingATunnel · 12/03/2018 23:47

Lady bits

KnitFastDieWarm · 12/03/2018 23:49

We have willies in this house Grin
when talking to my DS about bodily functions (for example, when he’s seen me changing tampons) it’s a vagina.

Onlyoldontheoutside · 13/03/2018 00:20

We called them lady bits then vulva when DD was a bit older but explaining that there were 2other holes in there, one for wee and another that babies could come out of .
Vagina was used when we talked about periods .
Maybe not on MN but a lot of women think they urinate from their vagina and even more do not understand that the vagina is an internal structure.
We don't need a formal new word that will confuse girls and women even more.
Nice to know that in DDS biology lessons she was taught that all the clitoris was is a little tiny bud just above the urethra🙄
