Racism/white supremacy:

Re: the package bombs in Austin

Alexandra Erin
@alexandraerin
whispers very loudly Hate crimes should be treated more seriously than other crimes because they terrorize a community. It's the difference between vandalism, assault, or murder, or vandalism, assault, or murder that sends a deliberate message of "THIS COULD BE YOU NEXT."
A crime can involve the emotion of hate and not be a hate crime. Most murders have one target. A lynching is aimed at a community. A lynching sends a message to everybody who witnesses or hears about it, about who belongs where. How we deal with lynchings must blunt that message.
If I kill you because I hate you, that's murder and you're the victim. If I kill you because I hate people of your religion, and I do it in a way designed to make people of your religion feel unsafe in their place of worship, that's murder and a hate crime with many other victims
This mini thread brought to you by the fact that there is someone sending bombs mostly to Black people in the Austin area and this is both literally terrorism and a hate crime, and if it gets any traction as an issue it's going to attract "All crimes are hate crimes!" comments.

This is all funny because she comes across as stupid but if you listen, she's really saying this: its not about school resources, its about students, ie poor students of color suck and will suck at school no matter what. Seems incomprehensible but she really is saying something.

'Thanks to the Russian nerve agent “Novichok,” I once got to see the inside of an interrogation room at Lefortovo, the old KGB prison on the east side of Moscow.

It was in 1993. The Russians were not pleased that I had written an article the year before disclosing the existence of Novichok, identified Monday by British investigators as the weapon used last week in the attempted murder of former Soviet spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury.'

I'm sorry to digress, and I know this is not the point of these threads, but I am becoming daily more concerned by what I suppose must be called a side-issue. Every time I see mention on SM of Trump and pussy-grabbing and Stormy Daniels, I see many, many responses from pro-Trumpers accusing Joe Biden of being a paedophile, with photos and videos which supposedly support this. I have to admit, this does deeply disturb me and is making me reassess my estimation of Joe Biden. Am I being manipulated by fake news from Trumpists?
I have also, of course, noted the "viral" photo of Joe Biden with the homeless man at the cinema.

So Tillerson has spoken about the attack but what a surprise, nothing from 45.

lettuceWrap · 13/03/2018 07:54

Sadly I think that yes, we are being manipulated. I guess that’s always gone on (ie newspapers historically would be bought or funded or influenced by those wishing to push a certain view), but everything is so much more immediate now. Easier and cheaper to reach and influence big groups of people.

DoctorTwo · 13/03/2018 08:23

I have read every one of these threads and just want to say you lot are not only brilliant but prolific. Long may you reign.

TheClaws · 13/03/2018 08:24

Ouais If nothing else, that’s a targeted campaign of ‘whataboutism’. Both the right and left engage in the practice, but the right have branched out into using ‘whataboutism’ themed memes heavily - so much so that they are not adding anything to the discourse at all.

OuaisMaisBon · 13/03/2018 08:25

I was listening to the news report of Trump's non-reaction to the "incident" in Salisbury and idly wondered if there could be a way where the rest of the world (well, everyone except Fox, really) could agree to deprive Trump's White House of the oxygen of publicity and just completely ignore his ridiculous antics as irrelevant. There is this convention about the USA being the leader of the Free World, and the rest of the "Free World" being directly dependent on the USA (what is that saying, "When America sneezes, the rest of the world catches a cold"?) - but given the current WH's increasingly demented behaviour, should it not just be dismissed and the rest of the world carry on regardless?
Sorry if this is nonsense, I am just so fed up that people are hanging off this bumbling cockwomble's every word. He needs to not matter and be replaced.

Roussette · 13/03/2018 08:36

DoctorTwo [smile

Ouais I agree but the trouble is he makes good news. When I say 'good' I mean that his shitstorm is so readable all over the world. His latest tweet for instance which is all in caps and sounds like it's from a demented madman. Which it is of course...
