Sorry to be so slow this morning, but who is Mother and why do we expect Mattis to do a Brutus?

cozietoesie · 15/03/2018 08:58

You're not being slow. The VP refers to his wife as 'Mother'.

And if anyone understands General Jim, they're tougher than me - so I'll defer on that one.

ElenaGreco123 · 15/03/2018 09:03

cozie Thank you.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 15/03/2018 09:38

But isn't the point that very little came of Litvinenko and that's probably to do with Russian money in our system?

That isn't to say they can't cause chaos - they can and have - but their insurance policy against severe retaliation is the money they have invested across the world. And what appears to hit them hardest are things that target their money, like the Magnitsky Act.

cozietoesie · 15/03/2018 09:56

I just thought it would be good to remember him.

TheClaws · 15/03/2018 10:09

lionheart I’ve seen headlines refer to the Russian embassy tweet as the implied start of the second Cold War.

TheClaws · 15/03/2018 10:10

IMO, I think that’s been operating for at least the last two years.

Lweji · 15/03/2018 10:12

It feels to me that we are indeed on the brink of another cold war. Not that it has been much warm since Putin rose to power.

lionheart · 15/03/2018 10:25

Oh yes, Claws, there is that. Shock

MedicinalGin · 15/03/2018 10:40

If Brutus stabbed Caesar in the back, I wonder how Shakespeare would have written about Trump firing Rex Tillerson on Twitter? 🤔
It doesn’t have the same dramatic effect really, does it. He was probs sitting on the loo bashing out tweets on his phone - it’s not exactly the stuff of stage tragedy. Nevertheless, this will keep me going this morning as a do my boring hoovering and try not to think about the prospect of a second Cold War

MedicinalGin · 15/03/2018 10:42

Sorry to interrupt the diligent work everyone- as you were!

I do love to think of all the mumsnetters like me who scour these threads whiteout ever saying much- I bet there are thousands of us all over the world. You guys are heroic 💪

MedicinalGin · 15/03/2018 10:42

whiteout

Sorry I meant - without -

cozietoesie · 15/03/2018 10:44

Over to you, Medicinal. (Re the Shakespeare.) Grin

MedicinalGin · 15/03/2018 10:54

Oh gosh- I don’t think I possess either the wit, incisiveness or darkness of humour to be able to even take a guess; I also don’t have enough of a working knowledge of the classical languages to be able to translate ‘fucking Moron’ with comic effect.
However, it remains a fascinating thought- how would Shakespeare have done trump? He’d have skewered him surely, but I am off now to have a google ...

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 15/03/2018 11:02

I think Putin's been waging this war for awhile. I'm scared that we're not going to take appropriate actions (sanctions rather than nuclear weapons) because of our politicians being in their pockets, similar to Suadi Arabia, and then we have people in charge who are so beholden to foreign interests that they shit all over us.

If this sounds familiar (and if you're reading the Trump thread, I hope it does!) it's even more depressing because unlike in America, it's very unlikely that there'll be a Mueller type figure here to investigate or that the UK population will even give a shit because Trump is such a cartoon villain it's easy to see he's nefarious. May and co hide it better.

This looks interesting, but I don't have Flash installed at the moment so can't play the game.

BBC game challenges young people to spot "fake news"
www.bbc.co.uk/news/school-report-43391188

The new interactive BBC iReporter game - aimed at youngsters aged 11 to 18 - gives you the chance to take on the role of a journalist in the BBC newsroom.

It is a "choose your own adventure" game, created by Aardman Animations, which challenges you to make your own decisions on which sources, political claims, social media comments and pictures should be trusted as you contribute to the day's news output.

Which should be published, which should be checked and which should be discarded?

The game is part of a BBC initiative to help young people identify false stories by giving students and teachers resources to use in classrooms across the UK.

It's by Wallace & Grommit Aardman, so should be fun!

Thank goodness! It's great that there are initiatives being introduced. I'm glad it's being taken seriously.

Lawyers for Charlottesville protesters suing over last summer's violence are seeking sanctions after white nationalist leader Matthew Parrott appeared to post on social media that he "scrubbed" information related to the Traditionalist Worker Party.

Rolling back civil rights in the education system won’t make students safer. The Trump administration should focus its efforts on real solutions if it wants to protect young people from gun violence.
