To ask why people have such a hard time spelling names correctly

So my name is Bryony. the 2 most common ways to spell it are my way or Briony. I have my full name in my email address and of course always sign off with it but after 34 years it still amazes me how many people will respond with "hi Byrony/Bryany/bryoni" etc etc. I mean my name is right THERE on the email- twice !

My mum also has a name that can be spelt two ways and she constantly receives emails with it spelt wrong. Even some of her friends she's known for years don't get it right.

Another example is a Latvian lady I work with named Liisa. Of course we would naturally be inclined to spell it Lisa, but that's not her name. After 8 years of her working for the company so many people still get it wrong.

I really don't understand how this happens. I can understand a typo but when it happens over and over again I struggle to see how just looking at how the email was signed off or the name in the email is so difficult.

And I feel awful for my brother as we have a surname that's also a first name , and his first name can also be a surname. So he's constantly getting called by his surname. I know in the grand scheme of things it's a minor issue but it's just befuddling to me.

I'm sure there are lots of reasons given - some of which may be valid (I've defended spelling w/dyslexia before) however in all reality I'm inclined to agree with LimonViola in post five.

AriAliyah · 08/03/2018 19:10

My name is Phoebe. Not Phobe. Not Pheobe. Not Feebee. Not Feeby. Not Phoby. PHOEBE!!!

LegallyBrunet · 08/03/2018 19:10

I have a name with at least three common variations, of which mine is the least common. The amount of times people have misspelt my name is unbelievable, even when I've told them which variant it is/it's in front of them. I feel sorry for my sister too. She has a perfectly normal first name but her surname is very unusual and people are always spelling that wrong as well.

thecraftyfox · 08/03/2018 19:11

We were considering calling our son Aaron but the constant mispronunciation dissuaded us in the end.
My surname is constantly misspelled. It's a really easy shortish name, similar to Cotton. It gets spelled Carton, Curton, Curtan, Cutton etc. Usually in response to my email which has my name RIGHT THERE!

ForalltheSaints · 08/03/2018 19:12

Some people just cannot spell. Other people have parents who thought it 'wacky' or clever to give an unusual spelling.

AriAliyah · 08/03/2018 19:12

@thecraftyfox I can't even think of another way to pronounce Aaron!

Loonyluna16 · 08/03/2018 19:14

@ihavebrillohair yes 😂 air-ron (ae is my Scottish lol.) Arron is a diffrent name. Although people call him Aidan and keiron too so bizzare 😂

Kraggle · 08/03/2018 19:18

AriAliyah my daughter is a Phoebe and the Pheobe spelling gives me the rage! Even now at nearly 5 her auntie and cousins sometimes spell it wrong. It’s laziness.

Skiiltan · 08/03/2018 19:20

I feel your pain, Biryani.

To my knowledge, my name has only ever been spelt one way as an actual name, but I regularly get e-mails spelling it two other ways.

Loonyluna16 · 08/03/2018 19:20

@thecraftyfox how do you pronounce it.

The easiest way to think of it as the AA batteries. Double A= "ae" you don't say Ah ah batteries.

FlyingElbows · 08/03/2018 19:21

I've got one of those names which is different depending on whether it ends with "e" or "a" (think Diane/Diana but not those). People just opt for whichever they consider most usual which in my experience is the "e" option. It's complete laziness and just rude really. It's a basic courtesy to at least try and get someone's name right.

csigeek · 08/03/2018 19:21

Same here. I don't get why people are so dense!

AriAliyah · 08/03/2018 19:22

@Kraggle I have a friend who spelt her daughter's name like this on purpose! When she told me I struggled to understand why... bizarre!

RandomMess · 08/03/2018 19:25

I get irritated when people choose to abbreviate my name when I never do just copy what is on my email including the spelling.

Recently started a new job HR spelt my name wrong on the contact immediately told them... everything is incorrect now I'm here and they tried to fob me off with the print offs being a week old - erm I told you 6 weeks ago!! Email address wrong, all my various records wrong Angrythey also now using the surname on my old out of date passport otherwise they will be fined...

Coulddowithanap · 08/03/2018 19:27

I have a colleague who spells his name different to his name in his email.. rather confusing lol ... Funnily enough he always spells my name incorrectly.

PourMeAGlass · 08/03/2018 19:27

This drives me wild, my DS is called Isaac, it's not really difficult to spell and isn't that unusual. In my opinion.

But come Christmas and Birthday's, we get many variants, including from Grandparents! Issac is most popular, that doesn't even look right written down!

I agree OP, people should show more respect and make an effort to remember.

backsackcraic · 08/03/2018 19:34

Yes you are, some people are word blind and have disabilities which make it difficult or impossible for them to differentiate.

Duchessgummybuns · 08/03/2018 19:34

My name gets spelled wrong despite being in my email address at work... but eh I guess most people aren’t as bothered about spelling as I am.

Great name though OP, that’s my daughter’s name and the same spelling Grin

LeighaJ · 08/03/2018 19:37

I can't even count the number of times each day at my job that I see even common names spelled incorrectly even when the correct name has been provided from official ID. Confused

4GreenApples · 08/03/2018 19:39

Some people just don’t pay attention.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 08/03/2018 19:40

My name can be spelled three ways and it is more or less inevitable that I get the wrong one, even if, as others have said, it’s on email. My surname can be spelled lots of different ways and I always end up spelling it out. Most mail has it wrong.

Skiiltan · 08/03/2018 19:51

Some parents don't help, though. After decades of people misspelling Michael as Micheal, I've noticed some boys are now being officially named Micheal. But their parents still pronounce it as Michael.

RainbowGlitterFairy · 08/03/2018 19:52

My parents decided to be unique so gave me a hyphenated name but rather than make up the spellings they used spellings of slightly different names. So say my parents call me Annabel-Isabella, they have actually spelled it Anabella-Isabel so nobody ever gets it right. I decided age about 10 that i had had enough of correcting people so started going by a shortened version, only like a dick I went with a shortening that can either be a y or an ie so everyone still gets it wrong.

FifiVoldemortsChavvyCousin · 08/03/2018 20:05

Clevs - My maiden name was not common, but not that uncommon either. It could be pronounced two ways. When I was giving my surname over the phone to anyone I would sometimes be asked to spell it after saying it. After spelling it out to them they often replied “oh, ” with the other pronunciation

Is it Bucket?Grin

FifiVoldemortsChavvyCousin · 08/03/2018 20:09

OP, it’s because people DGAF.
