If it did follow us for just over a mile will it be able to get back if it does have an owner?

No animaldaze way off north of the boarder

Thank goodness, the owner of this cat wasn't even interested, was aggressive on the phone and wouldn't answer the door when we took him back. A mile is quite far, usually only Tom cats that'll wander that far. Best bet is to get him to the vets for scanning and yes to local FB pages, mine are full of missing/found cats but lots reunited that way.

Cats have an amazing homing beacon. Dsis moved out with cat over 8 miles away and it took 2 weeks over roads and fields but I was greeted and awoken by its flea ridden scrawny face at 3am yowling on my window ledge. I’d leave flyers up around where it hooked up with you and see if anyone claims it, if you think dc is crying now, wait till an owner comes forward! Also try pets lost and found pages on fb. Full of tragic tales of woe and delight!

Worldsworstcook · 06/03/2018 20:27

And salmon? You’ve got a friend for life!

Chocywockydodahhhhhh · 06/03/2018 20:30

Didn’t have anything else in for a cat so it had to be salmon

Our cats don’t have collars either but are both microchipped.

Girl cat does tend to follow people, she is known for following us when we go for a walk and we have to return her home and then run the first 100m so she can’t see us and follow again!! She does not know her way home from about 1/4 mike away from our house. She just stands there and looks confused if you try and shake her off.

She also followed one of DS’s friends after a party, 1/2 mile in another direction. DS only found out as the friend put in snapchat about a cute cat following her. DS had to get out of bed and go and collect her at about 1am! There is no way she would have known her way home form there.

If a cat follows you again please don’t let it follow you more than about 50m as it will then be off it’s patch and stand little hope of getting home.

I hope it is chipped and gets back to its rightful owner. Even if it is not chipped I think you should put posters up where you found it. Its owner may be missing it.

Genuine question, how do you stop a cat from following you? Given that the one thing everyone says about cats is that they do whatever the hell they want Grin

MrMeSeeks · 06/03/2018 20:51

Put the cats pic on facebook, buying/selling, lost and found siges too.
This could be someones pet.
Some cats refuse to wear collars.

Chocywockydodahhhhhh · 06/03/2018 20:53

We did try and lose it but it just ran after us.

WatchoutDSisdriving · 06/03/2018 20:58

Yes to be fair it is easier said than done to stop a cat following you but you can hiss at it, stamp your feet to scare it off, not talk to it or stroke it etc. I know these are counter intuitive but letting it follow you out of its area is not a great idea.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 06/03/2018 21:00

Yes, take him to the vet to check his chip. He could be Six Dinner Sid! 😂

Loving the mental image of Herbie following you home though! 😂

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 06/03/2018 21:04

I didn't think cats did this- following people for so long they couldn't get home. I thought they were quite intelligent!
Maybe they just aren't that bothered about where they live and assume someone will take them in.

I've heard about cats getting stuck in vehicles sometimes and accidently driven for miles in the back of a van or something because they're attracted to the warmth inside. That could be a possibilty?

WatchoutDSisdriving · 06/03/2018 21:11

Our girlcat is far from intelligent Grin gorgeous and cute yes but intelligent, nope 😂

Our boycat is more intelligent and doesn’t follow people!!

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 06/03/2018 21:20

Oh I suppose intelligence levels vary amongst cats then! Have you checked on girlcat watchout? She might be in someone's shed eating salmon Grin

WatchoutDSisdriving · 06/03/2018 21:24

Hehe, I can see her! She is safely with us Smile

1ndig0 · 06/03/2018 21:34

Some people move and leave pets behind. People go awful things. Or maybe the owner is in holiday and hasn't bothered to get anyone to feed the cat? Maybe they've gone into hospital? Or the cat could have been dumped?

Anyway, PLEASE look after the cat until you can take him / her to the vets. Are you able to keep the cat if nobody claims it? If please not, don't put it in a cats home. I will take him /her myself or find a friend who will home the cat. I have three already.

Sounds like a lovely cat. They know who they are safe with. Poor thing must be lonely and confused.

TroubledLichen · 06/03/2018 22:17

Salmon! What a lucky cat. Actually really hoping it is a stray now (poor kitty) and this will be a happily ever after story!

retirednow · 06/03/2018 23:09

I hope your new friend is feeling safe now, can't wait for the update, SmileSmile

Chocywockydodahhhhhh · 07/03/2018 07:52

The cat has gone and is no where in sight. I will keep an eye out for it today

OP posts:
Chocywockydodahhhhhh · 07/03/2018 14:36

Update Cat came back and I have taken him to the vets, he is microchipped but the vet said he was malnourished and looked lost, but previous to that well cared for. They obviously won’t tell me the address but the vet said it was quite a long way away. The owners are coming to get her later from the vets and are really grateful as she has been lost
Happy ending

Wow, that is great news, I hope she continues to be loved and doesn't go wandering off again. She was lucky she found you. Halo

retirednow · 07/03/2018 14:39

Sorry, meant he, wonder if he's neutered.

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/03/2018 14:39

Ah that’s nice. I bet their thrilled she’s been found.

thecatneuterer · 07/03/2018 14:40

Great news.
