To ask is your dishwasher worth it?

We don’t have a dishwasher, but I’d really like one. Are they worth it, are they expensive to run and do they do the job better?

viva taking a cupboard out is fairly easy that even a non competent diy’er could do it. You won’t rebret it Grin

yolofish · 06/03/2018 18:18

basically, if it cant go in the dishwasher it doesnt get into my kitchen, with the exception of humans, animals and my posh mermaid roasting tins...

myusernamewastakenbyme · 06/03/2018 18:26

Ive got one....its ok but wouldnt be the end of the world if it broke....someone upthread said they'd rather have a dishwasher than a washing machine......how in gods name can you wash bedding...towels...jeans etc by hand ????

SleepingBooty · 06/03/2018 18:27

Ours died last month, hand washing is beyond awful. The new one won't go in until next month. 😣

Mollieben · 06/03/2018 18:40

Omg yes! So worth it - would never be without it

BlondeB83 · 06/03/2018 18:41

Best thing you’ll ever buy!

notmyredditusername365 · 06/03/2018 18:44

It would probably save you about half an hour dish washing time per day. So definitely worth it but roffle at the idea it's more useful than a washing machine.

Backscratchesforever · 06/03/2018 19:40

Thanks everyone, I’m going to take the plunge!

My DM definitely would go NC if I had two lol!

We managed for nearly 25 years without a dishwasher. When we had the kitchen redone 3 years ago we thought we might as well have one. But tbh we only use it at Christmas and when entertaining. DH does most of the washing up and he likes doing it by hand while listening to the radio. There’s only two of us do not much washing up to do.

The80sweregreat · 06/03/2018 20:07

Yes, they are great.

SellFridges · 06/03/2018 20:08

We’ll definitely be getting two when we do it Kitchen. I wouldn’t be without one now!

GerdaLovesLili · 06/03/2018 20:10

I love our dishwasher. And, as I told my MIL, it's cheaper than getting a divorce. She's now going to get one :-)

MissOrganisedMe · 06/03/2018 20:12

Sorry to hijack, I love my dishwasher but it leaves my dishes grainey.... Any tips on how to stop it. I don't live in a hard water area and use rinse aid. Flummoxed.

MaudesMum · 06/03/2018 20:12

I live by myself and have a small kitchen. When I refitted the kitchen I installed a slim-line dishwasher, and lost a bit of cupboard space as a result. No regrets! It washes up better than I can, and means that my kitchen surfaces are kept nice and tidy. It's my second favourite kitchen appliance - only beaten by the coffee grinder..

LetsGoBitches · 06/03/2018 20:22

We got our new one yesterday.
Had it installed by two fantastic polish blokes and nattered for the lunchhour they were here about all kinds of rubbish while they hauled it in and connected the pipes up..
I reorganized the under sink cupboards when they left, so feel totally virtuous.

Our old one gave up the ghost after 10 years of happy service, so IMMEDIATLY I got online and ordered an exact replacement.

Without one we used to have the most awful resentful fights iirc. IMO dh couldn’t wash the glasses and cutlery properly, and IHO I couldn’t wash the pots properly. What a waste of time.

None of that now. Just everyone happy after dinner and able to relax together. Also it’s much more ecological too as it only uses 11L of cold water, and dries up as well, as everything is sanitized in the steam and then warm enough to dry, even on eco wash. We put ours on when we go to bed and it’s all done by morning. Just fantastic.

I also got a tumble dryer after much guilt laden hemming and hawing about the environment, and honestly couldn’t be without one now.
I can’t believe I didn’t get one when I found out I was pregnant. When I think of the lines and lines of babygros and little cardigans I used to hang up, I’m aghast at the total waste of time I could have spent doing my Pilates exercises, or eating cake or whatever the hell I wanted!

Machines made to reduce the wifework load are the appliance of science!

Good luck Op!

Pandabear2018 · 06/03/2018 20:27

Yes.Didn't think they were worth it for small family, then stayed in a holiday cottage with one..... ordered one the day we got home!

madsiemoomoo · 06/03/2018 20:30

Definitely! My DP was always 'what do you need a dishwasher for, it's such a waste of money, even if I had one I wouldn't use it' until he moved in and now couldn't live without ours Grin

Nomorechickens · 06/03/2018 20:37

Firesuit are you my MiL? She rinses her dishes in lukewarm water, whenever we visit i have to sneak into the kitchen and boil the kettle so I can wash up all the dishes and cutlery we will be using in hot soapy water to get rid of all the dried bits of food.

frasier · 06/03/2018 20:43

Yes, yes, a million times yes.

I have no idea how much they cost to run, I don't actually care. Get one!

startingtheengine · 06/03/2018 20:49

I wouldn't be with ours.

Vibe2018 · 06/03/2018 20:53

Our electricity was out for a day last week and I really missed the dishwasher - it takes much longer and more effort washing dishes by hand.

Ohyesiam · 06/03/2018 21:17

If mine didn't beep when it was finished, I'd Marry it.

brownelephant · 06/03/2018 21:24

yes, worth it.
ours uses 7l of water on the eco cycle.
I would never be able to wash up all my dishes with that little water.

NeeChee · 06/03/2018 21:27

Absolutely love my dishwasher. We got a second hand slimline one off for £40 and it's still going strong over a year later.
My sister has one in her new house and has never used it, which I don't understand, especially with two under fives.

SusanneLinder · 06/03/2018 21:31

I couldnt live without my dishwasher. Kitchen tidied in 5 mins. Does toddler bottles ( not that I have a toddler..lol). All that washing and wiping dishes....yee gads...just no. Much more hygienic as it washes at a higher temp than my wee hands can cope with.
