To ask is your dishwasher worth it?

We don’t have a dishwasher, but I’d really like one. Are they worth it, are they expensive to run and do they do the job better?

I am now tempted to order a second one...

TheRebel · 06/03/2018 16:40

As well as your 2nd dishwasher you also need to get a waste disposal unit so you can scrape all of the leftover food straight into the sink!

YTho · 06/03/2018 16:42

Yes, we got one two years ago after years of umming and ahhing. It really does make life easier but be prepared that you may have to get more plates, cutlery etc depending how often you need to do a wash. We do a wash every other day so needed another set of everything.

LaGattaNera · 06/03/2018 16:43

I am in a hard water area and was advised to use separate salt (& rinse aid) and just buy regular tablets - I find the Aldi Magnum tablets fine

If you've got more than one person in the house, you should get one.
They're brilliant. Saved many arguments and stand offs.

LoislovesStewie · 06/03/2018 16:46

I agree with you all, and I read somewhere that it is no more expensive to do a full load than washing up in the sink.

UserDeleted · 06/03/2018 16:46

I don't like mine.

I moved house a few months ago and the house came with a dishwasher - first time I've ever had one.

It never gets close to full so seems like such a waste of money to run.

It's a lot quicker to just wash the stuff as it takes so long to run through a cycle. So rather than do dishes, dry dishes, put away dishes and being done in 20 minutes I have to wait a couple of hours. Annoys me.

I feel like a weirdo as I just don't like it. When it breaks I'm already thinking of what I can put in that space instead.

megletthesecond · 06/03/2018 16:46

Yes.

Firesuit · 06/03/2018 16:47

We have a dishwasher that we inherited when we moved in 20 years ago. We had never had one before, so used it a couple of times out of curiosity. Since then DW has used it as an extra cupboard.

It takes a few minutes to wash three plates and two pots under a running tap, it's difficult to see how a dishwasher can be labour-saving when the task requires virtually no effort in the first place.

I'm sure the people who use them aren't irrational, I suppose they just have very different cooking styles, or maybe they have hundreds of plates and cups and only wash them when they've run out of clean ones.

Firesuit · 06/03/2018 16:48

We don't dry or put away, so I'd say washing up after dinner is at most a five-minute task.

Firesuit · 06/03/2018 16:50

Pots, frying pan or whatever live on the cooker, plates, cups and cutlery for three people live in the drying rack.

Norma27 · 06/03/2018 16:50

Ours broke recently. It was given to us about 10 years ago so lucky it lasted so long. Was ok but not going to replace it. Other things I would rather spend money on. Don’t miss it at all and it broke about 6 months ago.

Do you eat out a lot? There's only 2 and a load of cats whose plates goes in too of us and we eat at home most nights and often have cooked breakfasts and ours goes on full at least 4/5 times a week. Three plates and 2 pots (does your food require no preparation and do you eat with your hands?) isn't even one meal's worth of stuff.

SluttyButty · 06/03/2018 16:51

I’m on my third dishwasher and can be quite childish in the period of one not working and new one arriving (that’s 3 in about 15 years).
I run mine on the eco wash, takes 3hrs 10mins but uses the least amount of power and water.

Bluelady · 06/03/2018 16:51

I love mine.

Bluelady · 06/03/2018 16:52

And there are only two of us.

Funnyface1 · 06/03/2018 16:52

Really worth it. We moved late last year and in the first week dh took out a kitchen cupboard to fit the dishwasher in. Once you've had one you can't go back.

gussyfinknottle · 06/03/2018 16:53

I thought they were a stupid waste of time until there was one in a holiday cottage I stayed at. Same with dryers.
Please get one. Now. They are ace.

halfwitpicker · 06/03/2018 16:53

Oh yeah baby.

LaurieMarlow · 06/03/2018 16:53

Do it Grin

notamorningperson27 · 06/03/2018 16:53

We have two in our new kitchen. This means you never have to have dirty dishes on the side - as soon as one goes on you can start filling the other - this is great when the kitchen is open plan.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 06/03/2018 16:54

There are only two of us. It gets used about once a fortnight. Could easily live without. However, I would take a bullet for my tumble dryer. I love it that much.

Rafflesway · 06/03/2018 16:55

I have had one for over 30 years now - although not the same machine of course Grin - and have to say that I really couldn't stomach eating/drinking from crockery that has been hand washed now. Everything feels so much cleaner/more hygienic when it has been through the dishwasher.

I know, before you all tell me, I'm weird! 🙄

S0ph1a · 06/03/2018 16:56

We also have two. I love them more than my kids.

Dakiara · 06/03/2018 16:56

Yes. I'm even thinking of getting new saucepans that will go in there too! Had six months or so of doing without one recently and yikes I missed it!
