To ask is your dishwasher worth it?

We don’t have a dishwasher, but I’d really like one. Are they worth it, are they expensive to run and do they do the job better?

I genuinely cried when I moved house and realised there was no space in the kitchen for a dishwasher. I do a lot of cooking and would be washing dishes for hours without one.

BarbaraofSevillle · 06/03/2018 17:00

We lived for years with the fridge in the dining room so there was room in the kitchen for a dishwasher.

CavoliRiscaldati · 06/03/2018 17:00

it's difficult to see how a dishwasher can be labour-saving when the task requires virtually no effort in the first place.*

Breakfast: mugs + bowls + spoons + knives + plates ++ pan + plate + forks when we have scrambled eggs
Mugs + glasses + occasional cutlery & chopping boards for snacks during the day
Diner: saucepan + frying pan or pressure cooker or even my slow cooker + chopping board + knives + colander + veg peeler + plates + cutlery + more mugs and whatever glass hasn't been used yet what is it with kids and glasses

Even when no one is at home for lunch, the dishwasher is full every single night, and is used at least twice a day at weekend, or when I bake a cake...

It might be lazy, but I don't want to live without washing machine, fridge, dishwasher. At least laundry can dry outside on its own, greasy dishes don't wash themselves!

TERFragetteCity · 06/03/2018 17:03

It takes a few minutes to wash three plates and two pots under a running tap, it's difficult to see how a dishwasher can be labour-saving when the task requires virtually no effort in the first place.

The task involves washing, not just rinsing. Do you think you might be running an unhygienic kitchen?

UsedtobeFeckless · 06/03/2018 17:06

I love mine with a passion.Grin

goingonabearhunt1 · 06/03/2018 17:10

My DM has a weird thing against dishwashers too, I never understand it; why would you wash up if you didn't have to?

vandrew4 · 06/03/2018 17:13

We took ours out and turned the space into a cupboard. i find washing by hand washes better and i have a lovely view from the sink so like the excuse to stare out the window.

mehhh · 06/03/2018 17:22

Absolutely beyond worth it I don't think I could live without one

Ironfloor · 06/03/2018 17:27

Hell yes! Worth every penny. And I say this as a person who enjoys washing up (by hand).

Bobbybobbins · 06/03/2018 17:30

Yes - we got one for the first time a year ago when we did up our kitchen and I love it!

DenPerry · 06/03/2018 17:40

Not just taking away the effort of washing up, but being able to shove everything out of sight.. my counters used to be covered in dirty stuff and it stank/looked awful. But if you've had a really tiring day you just can't face it. It gets things far more clean too.

BirthdayKake · 06/03/2018 17:43

We're hopefully getting one in the next few weeks. No more washing up after six people have eaten! Fuck yes

WatchoutDSisdriving · 06/03/2018 17:43

My main criteria when we moved house was having room in the kitchen for a dishwasher. Most definitely worth it!

HateTheDF · 06/03/2018 17:51

I used to think the same, we always had a dishwasher growing up. Last year me and my DP moved into a flat with a dishwasher and I never use it.

Flomy · 06/03/2018 17:51

Oh god yes. There is more to life than washing up.

Mine is on twice a day - full size one. On Eco wash.

Water bill is £28 a month. Im on a meter.

You get your life back.

formerbabe · 06/03/2018 17:52

There are no words for how much I love my dishwasher

Steamcloud · 06/03/2018 17:56

Yes! First thing I would grab in a fire, after humans and animals! Labour-saving, saves water, hygienic (good to be able to wash stuff above 60°c if there is illness in the house too).

DramaAlpaca · 06/03/2018 17:56

I can't do without my dishwasher, I love the thing. With all five of us living at home it's on twice a day.

The only downside is that when my young adult DC were teenagers there were endless arguments about whose turn it was to empty it, which used to grind my gears.

Steamcloud · 06/03/2018 17:56

It's great if you bake a lot too!

duvetdaysgone · 06/03/2018 18:01

I love mine! I wash all DD's plastic toys in it and most of my ornaments, obviously not with dirty dishes. I've heard about using them to cook with but I'd rather be more conventional with my cooking ☺️. I only use half a washing tablet and Tesco's own. Iv used brands in the past but I don't notice the difference in the cleaning, just the price.

noenergy · 06/03/2018 18:03

Am I the only one who finds loading and unloading it a faff. Don't use mine at all.

Willswife · 06/03/2018 18:06

I wouldn't be without one. We are a family of four and I have no problem filling it every day.

I would give up my washing machine before I gave up my dishwasher.

vivavivaviva · 06/03/2018 18:12

I have lusted after one for years and years.

When we moved to our new home, I really wanted to put one in, but the only two 'spaces' were taken up by washer and tumbler. Can I really take out a cupboard? Who on earth do I call if both DH & I are diy useless?! A plumber or handyman?

I reeeeeeeally want one!

Ladyoftherings · 06/03/2018 18:13

No way was my mum going to call me lazy for getting one - her own mother bought her one when she moved in with us and she died in 1972! Picture attached I remember it well.

Yes, hated it when it broke!
