Waiting for an out of hours hospital appointment for ds, 7 weeks, who is pickled top to toe in an angry red rash. I just want to sleep

Hi, hope you get seen soon, but please don't worry. When they're tiny, things like rashes look even worse, and can be caused by SHOO many things. Are you breastfeeding? Could have an allergy to something you ate. Cold symptoms? One of mine got violent rashes with colds for the first year or so...

Good luck, let us know how you go.

lborgia · 04/03/2018 23:35

Oh, ands completely understand the wanting to sleep... awful for youFlowers these are for you, this Bear is for the baby.

Prusik · 04/03/2018 23:49

Thankyou. Third person I've spoken to and instead of offer an appointment they said give 2ml of paracetamol and go to the go tomorrow. I'm so unsure

I hope it's nothing serious and your little one is better soon. XxFlowers

Prusik · 04/03/2018 23:51

He is breastfed but I've not eaten anything different. Not changed washing powder or anything.
The picture doesn't really do the rash justice. It's worse irl somehow

gwenneh · 04/03/2018 23:53

Loads of things it could be -- my two have had similar before and every time it turned out to be nothing, so hopefully that's the case for you, too!

Prusik · 04/03/2018 23:56

I guess I'll find out at the gp tomorrow. I don't often worry about my boys but I'm not feeling very comfortable about this rash

IvorHughJarrs · 04/03/2018 23:56

How is he apart from the rash? Is he unwell? Does he have a temperature? If no to both of those please try not to panic too much. Some children come out in rashes with viruses and allergies regularly

edwinbear · 04/03/2018 23:59

I remember the fear well. It looks like a viral rash to me, but glad you are taking proper advice.

Prusik · 05/03/2018 00:00

This is true. He's pretty much ok. Kind of fussy. His soft spot is sunken and he's stuck to my boob but currently his eyes are open

chickhonhoneybabe · 05/03/2018 00:01

Trust your instinct and get him checked out if you are worried.

lborgia · 05/03/2018 00:02

Ooh bless that little tummy (sorry, not very mn, what came over me!). Have you given him panadol before? Is he fussy? If it gets worse feel free to call them again, but if you're really worried, no a&e will make you feel bad for checking.

birdlover1977 · 05/03/2018 00:03

Listen to your instincts OP. If you are really worried take him to A and E, you won’t sleep tonight worrying anyway. I’m really hope baby recovers very soon.

lborgia · 05/03/2018 00:03

X posts, take him in. If his fontanel is truly sunken thenhe might need more fluids.

edwinbear · 05/03/2018 00:03

Keep him stuck to your boob. If he's responsive that's good, but at 7 weeks you are absolutely right to make sure a doctor sees him.

SimplyJaded · 05/03/2018 00:03

Could well be viral or hives.

Is he unwell? If he's fine in himself, no temperature and feeding well then I'd wait and see the GP tomorrow. Feeding is key IMO - little babies love to feed and if they are, chances are all is well.

If he's unwell in himself I'd not wait until morning tbh.

QueenNefertitty · 05/03/2018 00:04

Looks viral. DS gets them for fun- but trust your instincts- if he gets a fever, if he's vomiting, if he doesn't wet his nappy for a significant amount of time, if his cry changes, or if he goes floppy or unresponsive, if he's breathing fast, or his pulse is racing- or if your instincts tell you something else is wrong- a&e. No paediatric doctor will ever ever be cross about seeing an otherwise well 7 week old with a rash- even if just to reassure the parents.

TizzleBizzle · 05/03/2018 00:06

I would be going to a&e if his soft spot is sunken as he could need fluids even if it's just a viral rash.

SimplyJaded · 05/03/2018 00:06

He's got a good wet nappy in the pic op (I remember the blue line!) so I wouldn't be immediately concerned about dehydration.

RitzyRita · 05/03/2018 00:09

Have you done tne glass test?

If he gets feverish, averse to light, fractious, I would take him to A&E.

Otherwise, monitor til morning.

mishfish · 05/03/2018 00:09

Is it like this? My DS and I get them sometimes. Itchy and uncomfortable but nothing serious. Hopefully he’s the same.

turnipfarmers · 05/03/2018 00:12

If his soft spot is sunken and he's feeding often then a call to OOH might be worthwhile?

As for the rash, well I'm no medic but one of mine always got a viral rash and it looked much the same but do get proper medical advice if you are concerned. I hope he's OK soon.

UnicornRainbowColours · 05/03/2018 00:15

My charge came out in a rash exactly the same. It’s a viral rash he’ll be fine. I remember being really worried and rushing her to the dr to be told it’s a viral rash and that sometimes the body becomes allergic to the virus and breaks out in a rash..

sycamore54321 · 05/03/2018 00:16

Sorry but a 7 week old with a rash like that - I'd be on the way to A&E. There are a million reassuring possibilities of what it could be but at 7 weeks old, he has such little resilience that he can't afford to take a risk. That plus the sunken fontanelle would really concern me.

Have you done the glass test? Have you taken his temperature? Even still, I'd get medical help. Sooner rather than later. And so you will more than likely be reassured sooner, or if it is something serious, he will start treatment sooner.

Aquamarine1029 · 05/03/2018 00:19

Chances are that he will be just fine, but I would never take a chance with a 7 week old baby. I would be off to hospital immediately. I hope everything is ok!
