Waiting for an out of hours hospital appointment for ds, 7 weeks, who is pickled top to toe in an angry red rash. I just want to sleep

Flowers glad you’re being seen

Prusik · 05/03/2018 02:12

You know when you hope it's not going to be a massive waste of time but equally that's exactly what you want it to be. The lady on reception asked if I called 111. I basically had to say yes but I ignored what they said. Embarrassing

@Prusik so glad you took him Thanks hand holding

Peach I’m glad he’s on the mend. It was terrifying, I don’t have very many memories of my childhood, but that one is very clear. I can still see him now & the ambulance guys, it didn’t help that there were at least 4 of them. I know they and my parents would have been reassuring me, but I don’t remember any of that, just them ripping his clothes and nappy off and pretty much throwing him into a bath of freezing cold water and a lot of shouting. They came out twice a few months apart, but my parents sorted him out after that. It was probably tonsilitis too as I used to get it badly, then he’d get a milder bout. He’s never had it again since I took the hit & had my tonsils out!

Thankfully their approach to F.C. is much better now, I really don’t imagine being thrown into a bath of freezing cold water was good for babies having a convulsion.

Prusik. I hope you get seen soon & that it’s all ok. Nice quiet day at home tomorrow with the pair of them! Hopefully your older one will find his love of children’s tv!

I’d have just said ‘Yes, but Mumsnet told me to bring him in’ 😂

Not really, I’d have said ‘Yes, but I was still worried, so i decided it was better to be safe than sorry, he’s only 7 weeks’.

The triage nurse is happy it's not meningitis but I have to hang around for the doctor to get him properly checked. I apologised for ignoring 111 and she said if I only get reassurance then it's worth it

Looks like a viral rash to me too but glad you are getting seen. It's definitely not meningitis, I've seen that rash and it's totally different.

Good luck x

Itchytights · 05/03/2018 02:49

Good luck op. Let us know what they say? How is he?

kateandme · 05/03/2018 03:12

there are also times you can listen to what someone over the phone says and it can all go horribly wrong because they aren't there seeing something, spotting something missed that a doc or person can see with their eyes.your mum too.insitncts need acting on even if it turns out to be nothing serious.and ill child is always important and always serious.
big hugs.glad you getting it sorted.
anyone you can rely on today so you can get some catch up rest.

Prusik · 05/03/2018 03:13

He seems ok. Currently asleep on my chest. Hardly any phone battery left which is annoying as it's kind of a boring wait

My in-laws are up at 2pm. I imagine my eldest will have a lengthy nap from about 10pm onwards so I'll grab a couple of hours then

aww keep your phone for battery then.
asleep on chest sound pretty nicely peaceful to me.
sleep well.

Prusik · 05/03/2018 04:22

Just got home. The doctor actually specialised in pediatrics which was nice. He said it's not meningitis but he doesn't know what it is. Apparently a viral rash but the next 24/48 hours will tell us if it's a nasty or not. Any fever, change in feeding or sleepiness he said I have to go straight back to a&e and don't bother with the gp.

Interestingly he's had three explosive nappies over the last 12 hours which is very unusual but I'll see if it happens again. He had one literally as I walked in the door.

Bloody shattered but sleep feels a long way off

One of my boys was king of the viral rash just like that. Several times I developed grey hairs over him. It was always one of those viral things, be vigilant but try not to go worst case scenario now he's been seen.

Hope he gets well soon xx

Bowerbird5 · 05/03/2018 05:15

Glad you went. I knew it wasn't meningitis as children in my family and my sisters have had it. It is a different type of rash and as the doctor escorting young doctors around said once seen never forgotten.

Viral rashes can be nasty though as it can be accompanied by high temperatures, S&D, strep throat etc. glad to hear they called down a peds doctor ( so they should) and that yo've been told to come back if any change.
Didn't realise it was 111 that told you to wait. Did you speak to medical professional or just lay person. If lay person I would report as they couldn't tell if meningitis or not on phone and should have referred you. Speed is the essence with it and nearly cost my neice her life because of a doctor's decision.
Perhaps a friend would be kind enough to take your toddler for a couple of hours this afternoon and let you catch up with a nap.

Prusik · 05/03/2018 08:00

I spoke to the telephone operator and two doctors. The first doctor said we need to see someone within six hours, the doctor who was supposed to book the appointment said it was probably an allergy and to give him paracetamol.

Ds1 mercifully didn't wake till 7.45. I'm exhausted
