To think Eddie Redmayne is a really annoying Marius

I’m clearly not being unreasonable.

His rubbishness, quivering mouth and old fashioned voice have just been overshadowed by the utter crapness of Russell Crowe.

Not sure I can make it through the rest.

YANBU. I thought he played Stephen Hawkins really well. But apart from that, I think he is overrated.

Chulainn · 05/03/2018 00:12

I've always thought Eddie and Aaron Tveit should have swapped roles. Although Aaron was great in the role he had I felt he would have played a much better Marius than Eddie. Aaron's singing looked effortless. Eddie's looked like he was forcing it slightly.

BlondeB83 · 05/03/2018 00:14

Actually I agree with you there, Aaron Tveit was massively underused. He’s an incredibly talented performer.

Dixiestampsagain · 05/03/2018 00:21

I totally agree with the last few comments!

Eddierussett · 05/03/2018 06:32
Sums up my thoughts.
Dipitydoda · 05/03/2018 06:40

I was devastated about the film casting. They should have definitely gone for musical stars rather than film stars. They really missed a great opportunity most of the les mid songs require a powerful singing voice rather than just someone who can hold a tune. The casting director should be hung drawn and quartered

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 05/03/2018 06:47

Watch Alistair Branmer, who was Marius in the west end when the film was made throwing shade at Eddie Redmayne in every scene they share.

You can see him thinking 'you're shit, that's my part if I was only a bit more famous'

Good times.

LittleCandle · 05/03/2018 07:02

The whole movie is a travesty! I usually like Hugh Jackman, but he was nowhere near his best in this movie. Didn't mind Eddie Redmayne. I loathe Anne Hathaway - such an enormous mouth and so ugly and not a good actress - but she did ok in I Dreamed A Dream. Russell Crowe - why was he even there. Can't act and can't sing! Samantha Barks was great, but she has played the part in the West End, so is obviously very good. And Colm Wilkinson - you just have to hope that he was spared hearing some of the dreadful caterwauling as he filmed his tiny part.

ClashCityRocker · 05/03/2018 07:23

See I liked the film.....

.... Until I saw it staged in the west end.

Now the film seems rather poor.

The Bishop was the original valjean in the first west end run. I think.

ClashCityRocker · 05/03/2018 07:24

I always feel sorry for javert though.

Although in the west end version he has a lot more spunk. In the film he's just a bit drippy and pathetic.

slithytove · 05/03/2018 18:54

I’m glad I’m not alone in the world
That’s the interesting about Alastair Brammer

Javert committed suicide- no way for him to enter Heaven having taken his own life, it wasn't his to take.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 05/03/2018 20:11

Wonder if that makes a difference, Clash. I have a 20 year Les Mis obsession and was really looking forward to this version coming out. So was just hugely disappointed when I saw it.

Shame they couldn’t make the audience feel for Javert without making him drippy and pathetic.

MotherofDinosaurs · 05/03/2018 20:14

I adore the west end show and have seen it 3 times back in the 90s but I loved the film. Well except Russell Crowe. But I thought Anne H nailed it. Her rendition of I Dreamed A Dream nailed it for me - its such a broken little song, not supposed to be sung as a blazing torch ballad like the way that horrendous Susan Boyle does it (sacrilege)

RadicalFern · 05/03/2018 20:15

Is there any other type of Marius?

1ndig0 · 05/03/2018 20:15

Yes I agree they should have used musical stars for the movie. Ramin Karimloo anyone?
Samantha Banks is fabulous though.

dingdongdigeridoo · 05/03/2018 20:16

I’ve always found Marius an annoying character anyway. The way he joins the revolution, yet still falls for an upper class girl and has a lavish wedding after his friends all died for the cause. Eponine should have found someone worthy of her! Amanda thingie is also awful as Cosette in the movie. Just too fragile with a reedy voice.

It’s a great show to see on stage and I’d love to see it again. It was booked solid when the movie came out, although I’m sure that’s died down now.

KERALA1 · 05/03/2018 20:19

Dh unreasonably detests redmayne and has brought me round to his view.

Simpering, faux self deprecating and from immensely privileged back ground. We took kids to see fantastic beasts and dh literally groaned on realising it was essentially redmayne flapping round town with a suitcase.

1ndig0 · 05/03/2018 20:19

Just in case anyone missed him in the Broadway production (and he sound great too) Grin

To think Eddie Redmayne is a really annoying Marius
AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 05/03/2018 20:28

DH and I have just pissed ourselves at 'redmayne flapping around town with a suitcase'

He's also a proud Hufflepuff, which colours my view slightly.

Jamboree05 · 05/03/2018 20:35

I'm just gonna put it out there that he also cannot control his wobbling jaw when he sings.

Does my tits in!!!!

SecretNutellaFix · 05/03/2018 21:22

dingdong Marius is from the upper echelons of French society- his grandfather is a monarchist and his father was a general at Waterloo.

Foslady · 05/03/2018 21:44

For those who wanted a muppet version - closest I could find....

slithytove · 05/03/2018 21:48

I adore Ramin Karimloo
Made me melt in the 25th anniversary concert

Shock

DD2 and I have a huge crush on Eddie as Marius. You all clearly have poor taste.
