To scrape leftover pasta bake back into the dish to eat later

So DP and I are on a tight budget this month. To save money I cooked a massive pasta bake but was rather too generous with the portion sizes for DS and DDs lunch. To not waste good food I scraped their leftovers back into the pasta dish to freeze for later. Kids saw me doing this and have accused me of being a minger. Am I or are they BU...

I always do this and have it the next day for lunch. Plus I give my toddler a portion for lunch too.

Therunecaster · 04/03/2018 14:09

To clarify they are 10, 12, 15 so not in the dripply baby stage!

Id have done the same Blush

It's slightly revolting to scrape food from people's plates, and expect others to eat it later.

Therunecaster · 04/03/2018 14:10

Thank you. No point in chucking good grub in the bin

What else would you do?

Serve less next time and tell them not to be spoilt brats.

isseywithcats · 04/03/2018 14:14

you are been yuk yes if theres some left in the dish freeze it but not from three or four different plates where kids have had thier cutlery in their moths and then put the cutlery into the food, thats taking double dipping too far, no way, just give them smaller portions next time and seconds if needed from the central dish

Therunecaster · 04/03/2018 14:14

Agree special. This are the kids who have no qualms about me having to pick up their grotty laundry.....

Lethaldrizzle · 04/03/2018 14:18

Of course you should do that. No point in wasting good food. Kids are being bratty

YetAnotherUser · 04/03/2018 14:21

I do it, almost invariably for myself to eat though rather than my kids.

I'm not broke ass poor, but I'm not rich either and I absolutely hate waste... The way I see it, avoiding waste is a key way of staying "not broke ass poor"

BoredOnMatLeave · 04/03/2018 14:24

I don't think there's anything wrong with it but I have a toddler who likes to put her fingers in my mouth etc so eating her leftovers wouldn't bother me at all. As long as it's not served to guests I say crack on

dementedpixie · 04/03/2018 14:24

No I wouldn't scrape food from several people's plates to freeze and eat later. I would have put less on the plates in the first place and frozen those leftovers instead

Bluesheep8 · 04/03/2018 14:31

I don't see a problem with this at all. The only thing that stops me doing the same on occasions is the fact that DP puts far too much salt on his food and I hate food to be overly salty.

WinonaIsHot · 04/03/2018 14:33

I'm sorry but I think that's revolting.

ScreamingValenta · 04/03/2018 14:34

I'd do it from my own plate, for myself to eat, but I wouldn't combine leftovers from several plates. Luckily we have a dog who will happily hoover up most leftovers!

Peanutbuttercups21 · 04/03/2018 14:36

No no no no no

Basic food hygiene

Would you be happy if a restaurant served you reheated scraps of diners' plates?

If not, think WHY not

Yuk

GummyGoddess · 04/03/2018 14:40

Sorry, that would put me off if you'd just scraped the food off of my plate and dumped it back in with the untouched food. I might consider eating some of the untouched portion if I could be certain that's the bit I was eating but otherwise I would refuse it. If you're planning on eating their leftovers and serving them from the untouched section then I wouldn't have a problem with that.

issaflame · 04/03/2018 14:42

I think this is yuck, scrap it into a different bowl if you wish, but to add to untouched food it's disgusting

RJnomore1 · 04/03/2018 14:42

Vile, I would have cling filmed each plate and put them in the fridge though.

No way would I want to eat someone else's forked left overs.

BarbaraofSevillle · 04/03/2018 14:42

I don't see a problem with doing this within a family and often do similar. It's not the same as a restaurant doing it, which they often do by the way. Bones and veg off plates will go into stock. It's being boiled up, so nothing will survive anyway.

Dvg · 04/03/2018 14:43

Id find that pretty gross. I wouldnt mind eating my leftovers but not from others plates too.

dustarr73 · 04/03/2018 14:44

No thats disgusting. If you are poor this month give smaller portions, and refreeze the rest.

It just reminds me of my sil, giving everybody curry. But going around and scrapping the leftovers back in the pot to be reserved again. Its grim.

Wolfiefan · 04/03/2018 14:45

Yuck. Food goes on fork. Fork goes in mouth. Saliva and fork back onto plate.
Frozen saliva. Yuck.

Oysterbabe · 04/03/2018 14:45

I think it's fine. I don't give a shit about sharing germs with my own family.

user1493413286 · 04/03/2018 14:46

I don’t mind that with my own food or DPs but I wouldn’t like it if anyone else did it including my mum as when you’ve been eating the saliva from your fork goes on the other food and I don’t really like to think I’m eating that later.
