To scrape leftover pasta bake back into the dish to eat later

So DP and I are on a tight budget this month. To save money I cooked a massive pasta bake but was rather too generous with the portion sizes for DS and DDs lunch. To not waste good food I scraped their leftovers back into the pasta dish to freeze for later. Kids saw me doing this and have accused me of being a minger. Am I or are they BU...

Most of my at-home-on-my-own lunches are the kids leftovers...

Olga81 · 04/03/2018 15:53

I'd do it to eat myself but wouldn't expect anyone else to eat it

TossDaily · 04/03/2018 15:56

Eurgh.

userxx · 04/03/2018 16:00

It wouldn't bother me, especially with an extra layer of cheese chucked on top. What time shall I come over 😉

upsideup · 04/03/2018 16:00

My parents used to do this and I would not eat it, i would much rather go the whole day not eating than have to eat whats partly been in my siblings mouths.. I think its completely gross and wouldnt do it to my DC. Solution to not having wasted food is I let my children dish out their own food or give smaller portion knowing they can have more if they are still hungry.

NinonDeLenclos · 04/03/2018 16:00

Ugh no. I hate food waste but that's going too far.

WeAllHaveWings · 04/03/2018 16:00

Maybe serve pasta or meals from a large dish at the table next time and what is left in the big dish can be reheated, but yes, its pretty minging scrapping from their plates and mixing together.

As a teenager that would have given me major boak and I would feel helpless, humiliated and be pissed off at my parents for making me eat reheated food off of someone else's plate.

BumDisease · 04/03/2018 16:00

Unless they were literally dribbling and spitting into their food I think the chances of EWWW SALIVA GUHROSSSS are slim.

speakout · 04/03/2018 16:02

I do it. Unless a family member has an illness.

CointreauVersial · 04/03/2018 16:03

It depends.

If there was a whole pile virtually untouched, then I might "reclaim" it.

If it had all been stirred up and mucked about with on the plate, then no.

Weedsnseeds1 · 04/03/2018 16:03

Unless they have rabies, or anthrax it's fine.

Therunecaster · 04/03/2018 16:03

Thanks again for all the feedback. I also recycle clothes out of the laundry basket back into the wardrobes if they don't look dirty (not underwear!)

I wouldn't scrape from plates to reserve.

We frequently freeze leftovers from the pan/ serving bowl, but would let everyone dish up for themselves so they could have more if they were still hungry.

Cleanermaidcook · 04/03/2018 16:05

Where is all the saliva coming from from the people saying eew? do you drool in your food every time you take a bite? do you spit on your fork before you take a mouthful?

OP i do this regularly, can't see the problem within the family.

Zoflorabore · 04/03/2018 16:13

Op- seriously? Dirty laundry? The clue is in the name...

That's a whole new level of yucky.

Anything else??

Costacoffeeplease · 04/03/2018 16:16

Obviously on a wind up now, I can’t believe you’d be that minging

AnnieAnoniMouse · 04/03/2018 16:16

Nope. I’d eat my own leftovers or DH’s later. Probably even the kids if they didn't mess around with their food. But I’d never serve it to DH or the kids, or mix it with the other food & freeze it. That’s just grim.

So is taking clothes out of the laundry bin & putting them back in their wardrobes. Whether you notice it or not, your kids will smell.

BoomBoomsCousin · 04/03/2018 16:18

It’s a bit unpleasant to reuse food that’s been on people’s plates. But since you’re cooking it again it’s unlikely you’re spreading any germs and since it’s just family, you’re probably already sharing those germs anyway. It’s the sort of practice that’s canny when things are tight, but I would be aching for the time things were less tight and I didn’t need to.

Armi · 04/03/2018 16:18

So you’ve cooked it once, scraped the saliva-y bits back in, cooked it again then will freeze it and cook it again?

Um. No thanks. It’s not just the saliva that would put me off.

RestingBitchFaced · 04/03/2018 16:22

No that sounds disgusting, I wouldn't eat that, or give it to anyone else

CointreauVersial · 04/03/2018 16:23

I'm with you on the laundry, OP, as I have lazy teenagers who often sling hoodies and whatnot into the basket that have barely been worn, because they can't be arsed putting them away. Or even still folded from the last time I washed them. I'm not washing them again!

MsHomeSlice · 04/03/2018 16:27

well I hope none of you naysayers have ever kissed anyone ...oh the germtastic horror!

OP your mistakes were twofold, dishing up too much and being caught.

and btw where is the perfect poster for this thread ??familiessharegerms ...was that it?

OopsPardonMrsArden · 04/03/2018 16:30

Also they will have breathed on it, in addition to the saliva thing. Food that has been breathed on for a while is gross and a reason why I try to avoid buffets and salad counters.

NotTakenUsername · 04/03/2018 16:30

I think your children have a point - that is ‘minging’. I feel mildly nauseous thinking about it.

Smaller portions and extra if required. That is really grim.

MrsJayy · 04/03/2018 16:36

I agree with your children it is minging I would have cling filmed plates but to mix up plate scrapings to re feed is gross I doubt your kids will eat it again anyway.
