To have stuck my 2 fingers up at being beeped?

Crossing the road on my bike (on a crossroad, no crossing to the side of the road I needed to get to but it’s a steep hill so I had to cross at s certain point.

I started crossing when the lights changed, car moved forward slammed on brakes and held the horn down for the entire time I cycled in front.

I didn’t even look at them, just stayed nice and calm staring ahead (whilst their head probably exploded) and held my fingers up at them.

OP should have tried a crossing then rather than skip in front of cars lol

Oh my goodness. Is everyone able to understand there was no crossing?

You broke the law by riding on the blinking pavement.

chemenger · 03/03/2018 15:41

How does the fact that there is no crossing excuse your total disregard for the Highway Code? You were on a bicycle, that means you are not a pedestrian, so crossings are irrelevant.

Blackteadrinker77 · 03/03/2018 15:49

You could have been killed. It was very foolish of you to effectively play chicken with the traffic light. You would have seen it was amber, if you didn't then you should not be riding a bike.

You then instead of holding your hand up in apology blame the driver who was not at fault.

Ginger1982 · 03/03/2018 15:50

There was no crossing but there were lights and you could see the light was green and yet you still chose to try to go across the road!!

Guest0925 · 03/03/2018 15:52

Tbh drivers don’t know where they bloody stand anymore when you’ve got cyclists on pavements, cyclists turning into pedestrians when a red light stops traffic... ah fuck

chirpyburbycheapsheep · 03/03/2018 15:54

starzig to be honest I was just trying to clarify in my own mind what was going on! I agree with you, though according to the OP there were no crossings.......

daisypond · 03/03/2018 15:54

I'm assuming you walked with your bike and didn't ride it - that makes a big difference - ie, you were a pedestrian.

Beeziekn33ze · 03/03/2018 15:56

TheC - Did you not see an amber light after green? Or are you an 'Amber Gambler' as road safety info used to say?
If you saw amber and still decided to chance it you deserve the hotter and the driver did not deserve your silly gesture. You sound like a selfish cyclist who ignores the Highway Code and road manners, do you usually ride one handed?

Slartybartfast · 03/03/2018 15:58

perhaps the horn got stuck

rothbury · 03/03/2018 16:00

In the opening post OP says she was "on my bike" when she crossed, so yes, she is a law breaking pavement cyclist who thinks the Highway Code doesn't apply to her.

Okay OP, how would you feel,if you were cycling along, legally (I.e. on the ROAD) and cycled through a green traffic light only to have to stop suddenly because a pedestrian had decided to just walk across the road regardless of traffic?

The fact there was no light controlled crossing for the direction you were travelling in does not give you the right to just cross a road without considering traffic and NOTHING gives you the right to ride a bicycle on the pavement unless you are a small child....

TheC · 03/03/2018 16:04

Yes I was riding my bike.

I was asking aibu for them beeping horn and me flipping the bird. Not who has right of way.

iammargesimpson · 03/03/2018 16:08

They are interlinked. If you weren't being a twat they wouldn't have beeped their horn

DalekDalekDalek · 03/03/2018 16:11

They beeped their horn to alert you to their presence which is the purpose of the horn. Yes it wasn't very nice that she kept leaning on the horn but you should have just held you hand up to acknowledge that you were in the wrong. Sticking your fingers up at her is immature.

You sound like you are convinced that you are in the right OP so why have you come and asked on AIBU?

Blackteadrinker77 · 03/03/2018 16:12

Yes YABU.

You know that don't you?

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 03/03/2018 16:13

According to the Highway Code, the horn can be used to warn other road users of your presence. You were being an inconsiderate idiot so clearly needed the warning. The driver was not unreasonable, you however were breaking the law so YES, YOU WERE BEING UNREASONABLE.

SoupDragon · 03/03/2018 16:13

If you weren't being a twat they wouldn't have beeped their horn

This.

Whitecurrants · 03/03/2018 16:18

Yes YWBU.

PuppyMonkey · 03/03/2018 16:20

I think her entitlement to beep you far outweighs your entitlement to stick two fingers up at her.

So on that basis, the award of this court is for you to pay £2 million in compensation to everyone on the thread. Grin

Seriously ywbu. Say sorry and move along.

Brigante9 · 03/03/2018 16:21

Cycle properly, get off the bloody pavement.

chirpyburbycheapsheep · 03/03/2018 16:23

I was asking aibu for them beeping horn and me flipping the bird. Not who has right of way.

You do understand that the matter of who had right of way in this situation is rather crucial in deciding who was BU? But since you asked I think you are VVVU (and for the first page I was kind of on your side for some reason)
