To have stuck my 2 fingers up at being beeped?

Crossing the road on my bike (on a crossroad, no crossing to the side of the road I needed to get to but it’s a steep hill so I had to cross at s certain point.

I started crossing when the lights changed, car moved forward slammed on brakes and held the horn down for the entire time I cycled in front.

I didn’t even look at them, just stayed nice and calm staring ahead (whilst their head probably exploded) and held my fingers up at them.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 03/03/2018 15:16

Ah.

Why were you not on the road?

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 03/03/2018 15:17

Wahhh @smoove I hope you don’t actually believe that.

I get angry enough to do the finger all the time.

DobbyTheFreeElf · 03/03/2018 15:19

YABVVVVU She had right of way, you should have waited until it was clear to cross.

eyeswideshit · 03/03/2018 15:19

So basically you didn't want to wait for your light to turn green so you rode on the pavement and cut across a motorist? Yabu

Bluelady · 03/03/2018 15:20

What would you have done if the driver had been a 6ft hulk? There are some very nasty drivers out there.

Ginger1982 · 03/03/2018 15:20

But you were technically crossing at lights that the car was stopped at and you went when you saw the lights go green? You're the idiot, sorry.

iammargesimpson · 03/03/2018 15:20

So again why didn't you cross when her light was red?

TheAntiBoop · 03/03/2018 15:20

Surely it would have been easier to cycle on the road and follow the traffic lights - or were you annoyed at having to stop at the light and thoughtbitbwould be quicker to cross as a pedestrian?

chemenger · 03/03/2018 15:21

Presumably at the crossroads there are lights for north-south and for east-west. If the car was waiting on red on the north-south then the OP was on east-west. If she had only just started crossing when the north-south light was green then she must have started on amber, which she should not have done. I don’t see how there could be any other scenario.
Though now I see from the diagram that she was just randomly crossing the carriageway rather than following any rule of the road. I would not have beeped but I’d be unhappy.

LambMadras · 03/03/2018 15:22

Brilliant. I'd have done the same as you.

daisypond · 03/03/2018 15:22

Cars are only meant to move on their green light if it is safe to do so. They don't have an automatic right to carry on regardless. In this situation, it wasn't safe for the driver to move, so they had to stop, which they did. They shouldn't have beeped their horn continuously, the OP shouldn't have held two fingers up.

Ginger1982 · 03/03/2018 15:24

Perhaps the driver didn't expect some idiot cyclist to think the rules of the road didn't apply to them.

starzig · 03/03/2018 15:25

You need to dismount and wait for the green man and cross.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 03/03/2018 15:26

So you were cycling on a pavement and then cycled across a road when it wasn’t safe to so... YABVU. People like you are one of the reasons I have a dash cam fitted.

SomewhereontheM6 · 03/03/2018 15:28

If you have time to beep, you have time to manoeuvre.

I hate beepers. Everyone mucks up sometimes on the road, you making a point helps no one.Just swear under your breath like most people. .

Why stick up two fingers though? Just racks up the aggression.

eurochick · 03/03/2018 15:29

You were in the wrong. The driver was going on a green light. Bloody cyclists thinking the rules don't apply to them are a pain for drivers and pedestrians

chirpyburbycheapsheep · 03/03/2018 15:30

You need to dismount and wait for the green man and cross

But haven't we just been informed that there wasn't a green light because the OP wasn't actually crossing at an actual crossing? She was simply crossing the road?

chirpyburbycheapsheep · 03/03/2018 15:31

I meant green man not green light.

ShastaBeast · 03/03/2018 15:32

You were a dick and completely idiotic. Who crosses the road when the light goes green. And get the fuck off the pavement unless you are a pedestrian or it’s an official cycle path - which should be included in the diagram it it existed. Why did you think it was ok to cross when the light turned green? Driving is dangerous enough without people behaving like that. She was absolutely right to beep, you didn’t behave as if you were paying attention.

chemenger · 03/03/2018 15:33

So from the car driver’s point of view: she is sitting at a red light minding her own business, the light goes red and amber then green, giving her time to prepare to move off. She checks that the junction is clear of drivers who have chanced it on amber in the other direction, glances round and lo and behold, a cyclist is ambling off the pavement to cross in front of her. She jams on the anchors and in a fit of pique and adrenaline gives a blast on the horn. I think I have added a balanced amount of histrionics here.

Lazypuppy · 03/03/2018 15:34

@rothbury some pavements are cycle paths. Where i live pretty much all are cycle paths and it annoys me when cyclists are on the roads!

No idea if this was the case here, OP was in the wrong, and if not a cycle path should have been on the road

FlippyFloppyNow · 03/03/2018 15:34

Sorry - you were being an idiot. The car had the right of way but you thought you will entitled to ignore the lights and carry on regardless. And you are annoyed she pressed her horn at you. You said that it took you only five seconds to cross the road so the driver only had her hand on the horn for five seconds. Aye, there's always one...................

linz0308 · 03/03/2018 15:35

you were in the wrong and then made it worse by giving the finger. Rude!

starzig · 03/03/2018 15:35

Thanks chirpy. Just noticed that after posting. Maybe OP should have tried a crossing then rather than skip in front of cars lol

ghostyslovesheets · 03/03/2018 15:36

YABU - why were you not on the road? on a bike - you should not have been crossing there and you should not have crossed as the lights changed
