These are so beautiful I have to share.

Wow!

Please don't use terms like "mixed race". This isn't the 1970s and definitely not the 1930s. "Mixed race" is an incredibly offensive term because it implies that there is a "pure" race, a master race if you will.

The fact that someone proudly claims their family is "mixed race" just goes to show how deeply racism is ingrained into society.

Mixed heritage, BAME and suchlike are fine. But "mixed race" and "black" belong in the same dustbin as n or c. Just because someone believes they are of a certain ethnicity does not give them permission to use these outdated terms.

Peekaboo3 · 04/03/2018 15:13

And the point of this is..............? Confused

As a poster on page 1 said, try replacing black faces on posters with white ones and see how THAT pans out. Hmm

I hope you're joking/being sarcastic, coz that's a load of utter crap.

I am sick and fucking tired of this 'you're using the wrong terminology' bollocks.

Everyone says 'mixed race' for people who are mixed race. Especially mixed race people!!! Confused

Some people do just LOVE to be offended at fuck-all though.

What a load of bollocks.
Don't tell people how to describe themselves, its incredibly twatty.

Since when??? It seems the rest of the world didn’t get the memo Hmm

DoraMilaje · 04/03/2018 15:32

Oh and I don’t “believe” I’m black, I know I am.

ButtonMoonPig · 04/03/2018 15:34

@ChelleDawg2020

Oh dear. So, I’ve been offending YOU by using an “outdated” term to describe myself?

Thank you. From now on I’ll refer to myself as Mixed heritage or BAME to make you feel better.

DoraMilaje · 04/03/2018 15:34

What exactly do you think the “B” in BAME stands for? Confused

mynameisLuca · 04/03/2018 15:42

Black is apalling but Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic is fine?
Mixed heritage and mixed race are not the same thing.

Keep to your lane. Hmm

milliemolliemou · 04/03/2018 16:01

OP love the posters. Next step - get even more BAME stories, plays and films written by BAME.

usernamealreadytaken · 04/03/2018 18:10

Difficult call really; the posters are very clever but given that only around 10-15% of the UK population (I think it varies, and especially by area) are non-white, that would be 1-2 celebrities/actors/presenters in every 10 - hard to quantify when so many variables. Given also that many families would frown upon allowing their children to follow such a career path, this might be a reason for less diversity.

As for Hermione being black, I think there would have been uproar because she is targeted in the movies (I haven't read the books) for being muggle born, and this would have no doubt been construed allegorically for rasicm.

usernamealreadytaken · 04/03/2018 18:11

Sorry, typing too quickly between cooking - I do know how to spell racism really BlushBlushBlush

Qtgirl
According to the the stats only 17 had BAME in lead/supporting roles and 26.9% overall? I looked up US population stats. White, non Hispanic/Latino people is around 61.3%. The stats you provided (unless I’m reading it wrongly) included Hispanic and Latino as in the non white category so would need to be 38/9% to be on apar.

I am genuinely surprised that almost 40% of the population of the US is not white (and when I say not white I mean in terms of the data quoted). This isn’t represented in films/on the tv imo. I would have thought that figure to be more around 25%. Including Native American.

Historicallyinaccurate · 04/03/2018 23:55

How many roles are specifically written to be white, as a necessary part of the character? The problem is that white is seen as default when casting, if no race is stated and a black actor pitches up then "oh, but this wasn't written as a black character"
Is that the case? Seems as ppl write about what is common to them, there needs to be more racially diverse ppl in at the grass roots, so to speak. I agree noeuf, it's got to start somewhere.

I've a friend whose dc are on the books of a casting agency. They're non-white. She says that they get far fewer casting calls for acting-and even rarer to get through, but far more modelling calls than the white students. I thought that was quite interesting.
I agree Anthony. Maybe there is a lot in the I suppose you could argue that since 87% of the UK population is white, it stands to reason that 87% of the film roles etc would represent white people? argument though.

numbereightyone · 05/03/2018 10:40

There was a series on a few weeks ago called Moving On. A lot of the cast were black and there were several mixed race couples. There has been some criticism of the casting on Digital Spy as being 'PC'. The series is still on iPlayer if anybody is interested.
