These are so beautiful I have to share.

Wow!

Mummyoflittledragon · 03/03/2018 10:30

Brilliant idea! Can’t believe it was done so cheaply.

CavoliRiscaldati · 03/03/2018 10:33

I absolutely hate it, it makes me feel like we are not full individual and the best we can achieve is to copy or stick to existing white achieves, instead of achieving things in our own right.

Greenster · 03/03/2018 10:33

Love this. Would be lovely to have more ethnic diversity in film/tv and particularly where the fact of being an ethnic minority is not intrinsic to the plot.

PearlyG8 · 03/03/2018 10:38

I know lasttime

OP posts:
Sullabylullaby · 03/03/2018 10:38

Very good. Really makes you think.

DoinItForTheKids · 03/03/2018 10:41

I suppose Cavoli (and I get your point) that it firstly illustrates this lack of ethnic minority representation in film, in advertising, in media, everywhere. Until you see it like this you don't 'notice' the disparity. So it's good as an initial shocker I suppose.

But then the thing is why is this happening?

Is it that black or asian scripts or writers work is just not taken forward? And why is it that on the whole if a black person for example is shown in a film they're either 'straight outta Compton/gangbanger' or impossibly uber successful professionals!!

There are pockets of programming and film making that break free from these constraints, but not enough of it. Still.

I suppose we should ask JK Rowling why were her characters all white (there's only the odd non-white actor in the film from what I can recall)? Why don't writers think about writing for different ethnicity characters or do they feel they as a white writer can't write knowledgeably about a black character? In the case of Harry Potter, I can't see there's any excuse - it's the perfect platform surely to have every kind of ethnicity there by dint of the parents from all over the world sending their children to Hogwarts - an opportunity missed maybe.

If that's the case then I go back to my suggestion that it's because black writers as a whole, do not have their work taken forward in the same way as white writers do (possibly).

And I guess if you look at leading ladies / leading men, really, how many roles like that do black actors get for example?

CherryMaDeary · 03/03/2018 10:41

Brilliant! Would be great to see a similar campaign for Asian people.

PearlyG8 · 03/03/2018 10:41

Cavoli I'm really sorry this upsets you.

upsideup · 03/03/2018 10:43

CavoliRiscaldati

Try replacing black leads with white faces and see how it goes hmm

Hmm, it would be hard because there are much fewer black leads.
While were at it why dont we try and replace all female leads with men? Or all disabled leads with people without disabilities?

PearlyG8 · 03/03/2018 10:44

I think JK Rowling agrees with you Doin

OP posts:
skippy67 · 03/03/2018 10:45

It's gimmicky crap.

Mummyoflittledragon · 03/03/2018 10:46

Just to add to my comment. You actually have to also consider how many non white people train to act in relation to the population figures. Very few non white kids at dds dance school for example in a region with a very diverse population.

PearlyG8 · 03/03/2018 10:50

If you replaced all black leads, mixed race leads, female leads, disabled leads (and ?) with able bodied white men how many posters would escape/get caught?

Only wouldn't that make all romcons gay? Hmmmm Wink

I still love these posters and totally applaud the teenagers and their supporters.

It would be great to see a crowd funding campaign to have these up in a few more cities.

OP posts:
OutsideContextProblem · 03/03/2018 10:53

They’re great. I saw them at the bus stop but didn’t realise they were guerilla campaigning until I read the article.

Ironic that they’re coming out in Black Panther’s second week at the top of the UK box office, but the general point still stands.

PearlyG8 · 03/03/2018 10:55

So you think IABU to love these skippy67 and you could well be right. Why do you think I had such an immediate positive reaction?

OP posts:
ForalltheSaints · 03/03/2018 10:57

I would not have used the Inbetweeners as an example, but get the point of the ads.

CavoliRiscaldati · 03/03/2018 11:05

and my point is that I don't want a managerial role to be the token non-white of the company, it cheapens us all. I want - and have - equal access to that role regardless of my ethnicity.

I don't think saying "I could have done this" about anything proves a point, doing it yourself does make the point.

PearlyG8 · 03/03/2018 11:06

Mummyoflittledragon given your area is diverse does the class make you feel uncomfortable?

With about 14% non white on average according to ONS that would mean only one or two children in each dance class I would think.

OP posts:
parrotonmyshoulder · 03/03/2018 11:10

I think I might get my special needs students to do something similar. They are becoming increasingly aware of the lack of representation of disability in any type of media.

Historicallyinaccurate · 03/03/2018 11:11

Nice posters, but as always with these things, the whole facts are not taken into account. Eg. What are the proportions of black actors in the country compared to white actors? This figure should automatically be quoted when discussing the proportion of roles which go to black or white actors, to actually have more of an idea of how significant the figures are. And if the role is written as a certain racial character, of course this will affect the proportion of each auditioning for the role. It's never as straightforward as just giving one figure to try and prove a point.
Fwiw, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the Black Panther, didn't really pay much attention to the ethnicity of the actors (apart from the obvious impact of the plot), just enjoyed it as a good movie!

Those are great! I'd love to see that version of Harry Potter too.
