to beg anyone in Milton Keynes for a favour

My MIL is 82 and lives alone in Milton Keynes - four hours drive from us.

Her boiler has broken down and she has no heating or hot water. She is frail and cannot drive and she is getting very cold. I am so worried.

Please could anyone in the area possibly drop round 2x electric or oil heaters? Please PM me and I can arrange to transfer the money. Amazon Now don't cover her area.

British Gas can send someone round on the 14th March in our area... (an existing, mildly disgruntled, homecare customer here)

Yahdayah · 02/03/2018 15:49

Have you tried her most local Argos? There are two in Milton Keynes and I know from experience they are great. May also be worth tweeting the Argos Twitter account @argoshelpers

I’d love to help but with little people here I’m not able to risk any journeys out at the moment.

sundayfeeling · 02/03/2018 15:52

Don't live near unfortunately but bumping for you.
I really hope you someone can get to her. Fingers crossed.

Yahdayah · 02/03/2018 15:54

Me again. Could you call the non-emergency police line and ask if they have any recommendations for help in this situation?

SomeRandomBird · 02/03/2018 15:58

Thank you so much everyone, I have sorted it and 2 x electric heaters are in a taxi on the way to her. Really appreciate the advice and bumps Thanks

Can social services help? I’m sure it’s worth phoning them, even if social services can’t, maybe they know of a local charity that can help.

MasonJar · 02/03/2018 16:00

People can be amazingly helpful - we're in the SE and currently cut off as roads blocked from drifting snow. Someone posted on local website asking if anyone had electric heaters she could borrow as boiler broken down and she had loads of people offering to bring heaters round.
If you get anyone offering try to arrange for someone, a neighbour maybe, to be with her when they arrive.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 02/03/2018 16:04

Oh that’s great. I hope the taxi driver sorts them out for her. Can you pay them a bit extra to have a quick look at her boiler? It might just be the pipe or just need resetting. My friend is a taxi driver and is doing all kinds of random things for people at the moment.

hibbledibble · 02/03/2018 16:04

I'm not in Milton Keynes.

A good way of getting help would be to ask on the local Facebook group eg Milton Keynes parents or similar. I'm sure you would find plenty willing to help

babycakes1010 · 02/03/2018 16:05

That's great news you've managed to sort something

Corblimeyguv · 02/03/2018 16:07

Good news, well done OP. You are a lovely DIL x

SomeRandomBird · 02/03/2018 16:10

Argh plan fallen through!

happytoseeyou has made a lovely offer to drop one over, my partner is going to give you a call.

Toocold · 02/03/2018 16:14

I’m really glad you’ve sorted it! We have a village Facebook group for this sort of thing, maybe you could join on her behalf? I can’t imagine how cold she must be and very glad to hear she’ll soon be warm.

BitOutOfPractice · 02/03/2018 16:15

Get on amazon and but her an electric throw to get there asap

She really does need a back up plan

Can Argos not help?

LoopyLeaG · 02/03/2018 16:16

Hi, my Mum shared this post with me on Facebook as I live in Dunstable (30 mins from MK), I have a 4 wheel drive car and my husband is a plumber. I’ve joined this site to see if I can help? I know it’s hard to trust strangers on internet. I work at the Luton and Dunstable hospital and I’m also a carer for my 85 year old Nan so I know the worry that looking after the elderly can cause. Please let me know if anything I can do. X

Toocold · 02/03/2018 16:16

Arghh cross posts, I hope happy can help, please pm me if not but it all depends on where it is! I do drive but I’m reluctant to take the children out in the car.

Toocold · 02/03/2018 16:17

I can get out later when dh is home.

yawning801 · 02/03/2018 16:18

I'm in Beds area but car has pretty much given up on life so I'm powerless, I'm afraid. I hope someone can help, though. You're such a lovely DIL.

SomeRandomBird · 02/03/2018 16:19

Just heard from DP that happytoseeyou has come to the rescue and is going to drop one round!
Cannot thank her enough. Thank you thank you x

The local social services will be able to help. They must be used to this in the bad weather. I wouldn't rely on random people on the internet.

AdoraBell · 02/03/2018 16:22

Glad to see you’ve sorted something. I would order the electric throw as suggested too.

Emmageddon · 02/03/2018 16:23

Oh that is fantastic. My mum is 83 and lives alone, a long way from where I live, but fortunately my brother and his wife live a lot nearer, and have sorted out heating and food for her. Massive bouquet of Flowers to @happytoseeyou

yawning801 · 02/03/2018 16:27

That's amazing OP. Well done to happy!

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/03/2018 16:35

I’m so glad your mum is going to be taken care of. Thank you happy for your kindness and all the lovely mumsnetters offering her help and support. ❤️

timeforathink · 02/03/2018 16:38
