AIBU to want to get home

I kind of know AIBU but I am stuck in Central London, my home is in Aberdeen and last nights flight was cancelled, this mornings flight was cancelled and I’m now rebooked on an evening flight, which will probably be cancelled despite the fact that both London and Aberdeen airports are open and some flights have been getting between the two. My problem is that my booking is with Flybe who don’t rebook you as standard, don’t even e-mail when they cancel you have to check every half an hour on so on the website then race to rebook online yourself competing with anyone else looking for flights on the same route and they are cancelling a lot of their flights. BA are cancelling about half their flights and proactively rebooking people so there’s no availability for new people trying to get onto them. I had a choice of the last flight home of the day with Flybe or waiting until tomorrow morning and booking onto a BA flight. I’ve gone for tonight as I’m desperate to see DS, he’s 17 months, I haven’t seen him since 5am on Monday, which is the longest ever and I miss him horribly. I will kick myself if I’ve done the wrong thing, the flight gets cancelled at the last minute again and all the BA flights for tomorrow morning are full by then. Or if I make it to Aberdeen airport late at night then can’t get home from there.
I know it’s a bit of a first world problem, DS is home with DH enjoying the snow, I’m safe in London, none of us are stuck in the snow anywhere. I just want to be with my family so I’m having a rant. Going to pull myself together and get into our London office now.

Yanbu

Fingers crossed you are home soon enjoy hugs from your son Flowers

LakieLady · 02/03/2018 08:02

YANBU!

But these are exceptional circumstances. I know it's really hard, but when stuff like this happens there's really nothing we can do about it.

Hope you manage to get a flight.

ferrier · 02/03/2018 08:04

Train?
Coach?
May take a while but they are still running so far as I know.

PumpkinPie2016 · 02/03/2018 08:05

Of course YANBU to want to get homeFlowers

It's awful being stuck somewhere and basically having no control over anything.

I hope you get back soon and safelyFlowers

ferrier I’ll have a look at trains, I’d be very surprised if coaches are running, it’s the full length of the country and parts of the motorways have been at the standstill - including around Glasgow, which would be one route and the A1, which would be another.

Virgin stops at Newcastle but you can get other services into/out of Scotland. That's according to my son.

DrWhy · 02/03/2018 08:13

National Rail Enquiries is showing all or part of all the train services on that route cancelled all day.
It’s silly really if I’d been booked to be away for a week I’d probably have been fine with it but because I should be home and can’t get there it’s horrible. As someone said it’s that feeling of powerlessness- if anything happened to DS I couldn’t get there to be with him. I should be enjoying nights of unbroken sleep but I’m awake anyway worrying about getting back. I’m also missing all the snow day time at home with him which would be a real treat when I work full time.
Thanks for being sympathetic!

Mine said Newcastle to Edinburgh with CrossCountry then Edinburgh to Aberdeen with ScotRail.

RandomMess · 02/03/2018 08:45

I wouldn't bother with the trains having spent time stuck on one in very cold weather!!!

Wacadu · 02/03/2018 08:48

No trains in or out of Edinburgh just now.

ferrier · 02/03/2018 08:50

Duff info on the planner then. Just as well my son decided not to come home!

Veterinari · 02/03/2018 09:20

I’m similar OP. There are no buses or trains north of Newcastle and most of the roads are closed. Good luck!

Fletchasaurus · 02/03/2018 09:45

I feel for you OP - it's the not knowing that is the worse! Hope you make it home Flowers

movpov · 02/03/2018 10:01

I hear you. I'm stuck down south for the 3rd night tonight, unable to get home to Glasgow. Should have been home Wednesday teatime. Had 2 flights and train cancelled so far. Latest updates saying Glasgow airport still closed & no trains running north of Newcastle. If there was a realistic chance of making it home sometime today I would have tried but unfortunately I just can't see it happening and it would be worse to set out then get stranded somewhere along the way. While feeling a bit fed up now, at least I'm safe in a hotel with a bed and food. But yes it's a pain. Good luck to everyone that's stuck & hope we all get home soon

ThanksForAllTheFish · 02/03/2018 10:09

Could you fly London to Glasgow and then get the Megabus from Glasgow to Aberdeen?

Just checked and both flights (easyJet flight from stanstead I believe) and megabus are running today.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 02/03/2018 10:13

Glasgow airport is open but loads of flights have been cancelled already.

HarrietSmith · 02/03/2018 10:14

I am sure that you are missing your son terribly. However, if airports are cancelling flights, there are rail cancellations and road travel is unsafe - it really is best to wait until conditions improve. To put it bluntly, if you opt to get home as soon as possible and are one of the people involved in an accident, it is not going to help your family.

DrWhy · 02/03/2018 12:50

Thanks folks, both for the suggestions and the sensible advice.
I am not going to get entangled with trains and busses, having seen some photos of the A90 outside of Dundee (which is currently closed) there is no chance that anything is getting through for a while. If the road is like that I have no confidence that the railway will be open on all stretches between Newcastle and Aberdeen by the time I get there. Much as I might want to be home I don’t need to be travelling and I’d rather be stranded in a London hotel than a freezing vehicle.
Our local Facebook and people in aberdeen suggest that if I can get a flight the roads from the airport to at least the bottom of my road are fine if I keep to major routes so I’m persisting with the flight plan.
My very sensible husband has suggested booking a fully flexible BA flight for tomorrow morning so if tonight’s flight leaves I can cancel the one tomorrow at no cost, if tonight’s flight doesn’t leave I take the refund for that and then I’m in the system for BA to get me home.
Thoughts with all those also stuck, movpov it sounds like we are basically in the same situation, summed up as annoying but could be worse.

I’m so glad that DH managed to get the last train going our way by the skin of his teeth. I really hope you get home soon. I used travel on Flybe a lot for work they used to drive me mental so you have my sympathies

altiara · 02/03/2018 20:31

Arseholes! Sorry I’ve nothing helpful other than swearing and having an angry cry.

My amazing DH booked me a hotel whilst simultaneously managing toddler dinner time! I’ve got to the hotel, booked my new backup flight and done an online shop (although first available slot is Monday) and now going to sleep as I need to be up at 5.15 to make my next attempt at a flight.
Now worrying as DH mentioned that they only have one pint of milk left in the house and the local FB pages are full of photos of empty supermarket shelves - and of course there’s nowhere at Heathrow selling milk!

Dairy farm at Blackburn has milk on tap (literally, they have a dispensing machine) and jk fine foods in town have too. Hope you get home safely tomorrow x
