Wearing a ring on THAT finger

If you see an old picture of (male) someone wearing a ring on their ring finger do you assume they were previously promised/engaged? Know for a fact never married but have never known them to wear a ring. The ring finger seems an odd choice?

My Dad used to wear a signet (sp?) ring, I'm sure on that finger. Maybe it was that?

His answer when I queried it was that it was a ring he was bought that just fit on that finger??

A ring he was bought, as in someone gave it to him as a gift? That's an odd gift for a man who doesn't typically wear jewelry.

I've known older men who wore a signet ring on that finger but again. only married ones. Even if it wasn't strictly their wedding ring, they wouldn't put it on that hand if they weren't married.

DH had an engagement ring, so yes it's possible he was engaged.

Simple. Ask him?

If it's a man, yes, I would assume he's been married. A very young one, possibly engaged at a push.

Of a woman I wouldn't think anything, because some women wear rings on any fingers without it meaning anything
