To be annoyed at the school letting the children play in the snow all afternoon?

Most schools in our local area closed today due to snow but DD's primary school stayed open. (Fine by me)

DD (year 2) informs me that they had no lessons at all this afternoon and spent most of the time out on the field (so over 2 hours)

Apparently lots of children were being taken out as the day progressed, so I guess it got to a point where the teachers didn't see the point in carrying on with normal lessons.

AIBU to think that in sub zero temperatures this is too long for little children? I know that they're obviously going to play in it at break and lunch but I'd like to think that on the whole they are in a warm classroom when they're at school.

Are all the children still alive?

ineedamoreadultieradult · 28/02/2018 19:46

I would be annoyed if they didn't! Our school was open, the only one in the city. The kids played out after lunch until they were picked up.

DillyDilly · 28/02/2018 19:46

Imagine, 2 hours of running around outside in the fresh air, having fun, supervised by teachers!

Of course you are being unreasonable.

Afternooncatnap · 28/02/2018 19:46

You realise there are country's much colder than the UK and the kids still play outside.

AnneLovesGilbert · 28/02/2018 19:46

Oh my god.

Now none of them will pass any exams or get jobs.

It’s a disaster.

pinkyredrose · 28/02/2018 19:46

if they were running around they probably ended up quite warm! Unclench Smile

eleanorelephant · 28/02/2018 19:46

I assume so mum yes. But who's to say they won't go down with viruses now.

Regularsizedrudy · 28/02/2018 19:47

I’d be glad cos they’ll be knackered when they get in and won’t want to go back out in it!

LIZS · 28/02/2018 19:47

As long as they were appropriately dressed and could go inside to warm up I would not see a problem.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 28/02/2018 19:47

I was delighted when dd told me they were allowed out in the snow today. Granted we don’t have a lot here but it doesn’t come that often. They also had a classroom with a dvd playing for any children who were too cold.

MumGoneMild · 28/02/2018 19:47

What virus would they catch?

ALemonyPea · 28/02/2018 19:47

Grin Mum

I think it’s perfectly fine, it’s not like they are going to do it every week. If the children were happy doing it, no harm done.

The school I work at, the children were going stir crazy today as hadn’t had outdoor play until after lunch. They had a blast in the snow.

AnneLovesGilbert · 28/02/2018 19:47

Were the viruses waiting by the school gate to get them?

ChasedByBees · 28/02/2018 19:48

They will only come down with a virus if they’ve been exposed to a virus. Snow doesn’t contain viruses on the whole.

HarrietKettle · 28/02/2018 19:48

Wrapping up warm and running around in the snow for a bit (it's not like we're in Flinland and it's -15) should pose absolutely no threat to healthy small children. I'm sure the teachers risk assesses it.

Sounds fun.

BarbarianMum · 28/02/2018 19:48

Seriously? Yes YABU. You could always ask that your dd is kept in and given some work to do but for goodness sake don't try and spoil the other children's fun.

OutyMcOutface · 28/02/2018 19:48

Did they have weather appropriate appropriate clothing? Warm coats/wellies etc? Or were they running around in jumpers and drenched sneakers?

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 28/02/2018 19:48

When it snowed in December we had a couple of days off school. We walked to the other end of the village to a huge hill (which took about an hour with a quick nip into the pub for a hot chocolate) spent four hours going up and down the hill then trekked home (also via the pub for a little red wine, though not for the DC) and none of the people (11 adults and 14 DC) in our party had anything but a lovely day.

Children love snow. So long as they were wrapped up and protected from the cold there's nothing wrong with them having an afternoon off lessons to play. It'll be a memory that lasts them forever.

hazeyjane · 28/02/2018 19:49

Bastards.

PerfectlyPosed · 28/02/2018 19:49

Log it with 101

HarrietKettle · 28/02/2018 19:49

Yeah, snow isn't that effective at harbouring viruses Confused

pinkyredrose · 28/02/2018 19:49

They're more likely to catch a virus in an enclosed space.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 28/02/2018 19:49

Oh let them play, as they may not see any more. They'll remember this year for the rest of their lives.

Noluthando · 28/02/2018 19:49

I'm annoyed that they wouldn't let my child play out today. YABU.

divadee · 28/02/2018 19:49

Well if they catch a virus it would be the same virus that they would of caught being inside doing school work. They are more likely not to catch a virus being outdoors in the fresh air rather than touching things that germy kids have touched. Unclench and let the kids enjoy the rare treat of some snow.
