To be annoyed at the school letting the children play in the snow all afternoon?

Most schools in our local area closed today due to snow but DD's primary school stayed open. (Fine by me)

DD (year 2) informs me that they had no lessons at all this afternoon and spent most of the time out on the field (so over 2 hours)

Apparently lots of children were being taken out as the day progressed, so I guess it got to a point where the teachers didn't see the point in carrying on with normal lessons.

AIBU to think that in sub zero temperatures this is too long for little children? I know that they're obviously going to play in it at break and lunch but I'd like to think that on the whole they are in a warm classroom when they're at school.

I didn't realise snow carried viruses what with it just being cold water.

fairgame84 · 28/02/2018 19:50

I'm glad they did this at DSs school as he can't socialise locally. He's had fun at school. This weather happens only every few years and it's good for kids to be out in the fresh air having fun as long as they are suitably clothed.

Anatidae · 28/02/2018 19:50

Ours play out down to -15 In still air conditions. They sleep outdoors down to that as well. Obviously if there’s heavy windchill (today was down to almost -30 with windchill) they stay in.

Yabu. Let them play outdoors! They’re less likely to contract contagious illness outside than in. Let them be kids and play.

eleanorelephant · 28/02/2018 19:51

I should have mentioned (sorry, drip feed) that DD wasn't wearing her hat. I know that's not the school's fault (although maybe the teachers could take a little more care to ensure the infants are wrapped up properly)

I'm just worried she's going to get ill now.

I can't believe you wouldn't want your children to play in the snow, funsponge!

Munchyseeds · 28/02/2018 19:52

They will have had fun and be fine!!

imaginativeusername · 28/02/2018 19:52

How mean of them to give your child memories outside of the classroom. Come on get a grip

HarrietKettle · 28/02/2018 19:52

Oh. You think being cold makes you ill.

UserSnoozer · 28/02/2018 19:52

A hat? Shocker. If no coat then I'd understand the raised eyebrow, but no hat? Seriously

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 28/02/2018 19:52

I think it was lovely of the teachers to let the kids play out. As a pp said, this is the kind of stuff childhood memories are made of.

LittleBearPad · 28/02/2018 19:52

You don’t catch colds by being cold!

Yabu.

What a great afternoon.

Jenala · 28/02/2018 19:53

She wasn't wearing a hat? Well that changes everything. Viruses enter through the scalp after all.

londonrach · 28/02/2018 19:53

What amazing school. Your dc are so lucky to have fresh air and enjoy playing inthe snow.

eleanorelephant · 28/02/2018 19:53

Doesn't getting cold lower your immune system and make you more susceptible to catching things / not being able to fight them off? That's what I always understood

Obviously I don't think viruses live in snow

jarhead123 · 28/02/2018 19:53

I'm with you. They won't have been in suitable clothing or footwear - bet they were frozen!

Taylor22 · 28/02/2018 19:53

WHAT?! The school actually allowed the children to make happy and fond memories in a safe and supervised environment?!?!

Log it with the head! Demand a meeting with the Governors! Write to your MP!

Or maybe get a grip Hmm

Do not let your child become victim to the FATAL snow!!

hp2 · 28/02/2018 19:54

You do not catch a virus by getting cold. Staying in a warm classroom with 25 other germ magnets is how you catch one!!

Steeley113 · 28/02/2018 19:54

I’m always confused as to how in this day and age, people haven’t figured out that colds aren’t caused by actually being cold Hmm

cardibach · 28/02/2018 19:54

Getting cold won’t make her ill. If she was running around she probably wasn’t even cold. Someone on One Show right now who is a body temperature expert say8ng hats don’t make that much difference anyway.

PrincessHairyMclary · 28/02/2018 19:54

Schools can't get a break.
Close - Parents complain about not having enough notice and having to sort out childcare.
Open - people moan about H&S and let kids be kids and play in the snow and make memories.

Your school seemed to compromise, you didn't have to sort out last minute childcare and your DC got to play in the snow with their friends. Presumably parents sent children to school in suitable clothes therefore it's a non-issue.

MaisyPops · 28/02/2018 19:55

If they get a virus then that's being exposed to a virus, not going in the snow.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 28/02/2018 19:55

Oh the oh its cold you might catch sonething. You do realise that they might be called colds bit thsir not caused by being cold.

Virus its not about being cold.

Funny how theres another thread going schools are open why are children being kept off, and people are replying going ah its snow let the kids play in the snow. Heres a school thats let kids play in the snow and thats not right either.

Goodness! And i know MN isn't one hive mind but it seems some ome has to complain

Singlebutmarried · 28/02/2018 19:55

If snowy we get told (if school open) to send the kids in with warm clothes and a change of clothes and that the kids will have a fun day.

SweetMoon · 28/02/2018 19:56

No hat??? Goodness!!! Has her head fell off yet?

she's Year 2 though, not nursery. Surely she's capable of putting her hat on?
