To be annoyed at the school letting the children play in the snow all afternoon?

Most schools in our local area closed today due to snow but DD's primary school stayed open. (Fine by me)

DD (year 2) informs me that they had no lessons at all this afternoon and spent most of the time out on the field (so over 2 hours)

Apparently lots of children were being taken out as the day progressed, so I guess it got to a point where the teachers didn't see the point in carrying on with normal lessons.

AIBU to think that in sub zero temperatures this is too long for little children? I know that they're obviously going to play in it at break and lunch but I'd like to think that on the whole they are in a warm classroom when they're at school.

Just wrap them up warm tomorrow- we are in a cold country and find layering is the way. Wool base layers of they have them, otherwise layers, wool and of course a dry change in case they get wet. Overlayers need to be snow or waterproof depending on how wet the snow is (it’s powder here so not wet.)

Dont worry about viruses, the little buggers will pick them up anyway. You’ve had a bit of a flaming in here - people do love to pile on I’m afraid. But they won’t get sick, they’ll have a lot of fun running around. Will school give them hot drinks or let them take a thermos? That might be nice for tomorrow

Chienrouge · 28/02/2018 20:04

Doesn't getting cold lower your immune system and make you more susceptible to catching things / not being able to fight them off? That's what I always understood

No. So good news, you don’t need to worry about her getting ill from playing outside.
Honestly she’s far far more likely to get something in a stuffy classroom with a load of other kids.
I hope she enjoyed her day in the snow!

Psychobabble123 · 28/02/2018 20:04

Oh for crying out loud!! I despair, I really do!

Dottieroses · 28/02/2018 20:05

If she was cold* sorry

Also to add, with the old myths, it's only people who have been told these myths by the older generation that have these views. When they were told this science hadn't realised it wasn't nonsense.

Swarskid2184 · 28/02/2018 20:05

You cannot catch a virus by being cold. To have a perceptible impact on your immune system you (or your DD) would need to have a significant dip in your internal body temperature.

PattiStanger · 28/02/2018 20:05

Come OP, you posted in AIBU, if you really have health anxiety then you must have been aware that you were likely to be totally overreacting yet you're being shirty with everyone else who has a normal perspective.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 28/02/2018 20:05

Harriet my current boss is like that, it’s utterly fucking exhausting isn’t it

The only way they would catch something from the snow is if they were eating yellow snow...which I’m reasonably sure they weren’t

MaisyPops · 28/02/2018 20:05

sadie
I agree.
We have almost 2000 students and at least half of them were out yesterday playing in the snow. We even had 6th formers out in it playing with the y7s. It was lovely.
Nobody died.
Nobody got a virus from being in the cold.
Lessons carried on as normal.

gamerchick · 28/02/2018 20:05

Ah OP she’ll have had a mint time. She’s more likely to catch a virus sitting in a hot classroom in close quarters with other germ incubators than she would have in the fresh air.

Kids love the snow, try not to stew on it.

PhelanThePain · 28/02/2018 20:05

Oh for crying out loud!! What do you think most of the children who stayed off school did? They played out in the snow

I cannot believe that people are seriously complaining about their children playing outside. Why have we become so afraid of outside??

TattyTShirt · 28/02/2018 20:06

Oh boy! Schools are criticized if they close because of snow and criticized if they allow their pupils a fun snow day. Schools can't win!

ShinyMe · 28/02/2018 20:06

That reminds me that in my teens I used to go out with wet hair almost every day - I liked to wash my hair every day but I also liked staying in bed til the last possible minute, so I went out with waist length wet hair to school every day. My granny used to be horrified and always said I'd catch cold, but I rarely did. The worst thing that happened was that my hair froze solid sometimes, which was really cool.

Starlighter · 28/02/2018 20:06

I think that’s really lovely of the school! What a great afternoon for the kids. Smile

Trailedanderror · 28/02/2018 20:08

@MumGoneMild 😂
Flowers OP health anxiety sucks but try and see this as a positive. Your DD did something that you, with your anxiety would have avoided. She might get a cold, although as pp have said that's more likely sitting with her class, but she'll be fine. So try and see it as a positive. Flowers

SweetMoon · 28/02/2018 20:08

And again. Op told they are bu and low and behold after a few more posts the one informing us of their 'anxiety' appears as though we're all supposed to be mind readers.

SophieWilson92 · 28/02/2018 20:09

YABU. In a lot of places there's snow every year! Finnish babies sleep outside in it...

My DD was making snowmen today, first proper snow she's had a chance to play in

eleanorelephant · 28/02/2018 20:09

Oh well. I'm clearly by myself on this then.

I send my child to school to learn, not to spend hours outside jn the freezing cold. I don't think the teachers were trying to make memories for the children, I think they just couldn't be arsed anymore.

OP posts:
Chienrouge · 28/02/2018 20:09

Did she enjoy herself OP?

crackerjacket · 28/02/2018 20:10

Here in Canada the cut off temperature is minus 10. If it's above that, they go outside to play. Note that this is nursery, not school.

MammaAgata · 28/02/2018 20:10

Health anxiety? Does anyone not have an anxiety these days? Can’t kids just be kids and have a bit of a laugh in a bit of very rare snow... without the threat of pneumonia, viruses, boils and brimstone. Jeez, really heard it all now

PaulCalf · 28/02/2018 20:10

That sounds perfect to me - kids playing outside having the time of their lives, no childcare hassle from school closing

crackerjacket · 28/02/2018 20:10

I think they just couldn't be arsed anymore.

^

probably

lauryloo · 28/02/2018 20:10

Did your daughter enjoy it?

Readermumof3 · 28/02/2018 20:10

Hells bells schools just can't win can they? No matter what they do they're damned.

This is yet another thread today that makes me go HmmShockSadAngryConfused. Had half the population gone down with snow madness or something today? was everyone playing outside today?

HonkyWonkWoman · 28/02/2018 20:10

OP - Hope you've learnt from this thread that you can't get a virus from being cold.
Playing out in the snow will not lower your immune system so you catch a virus.
Playing out in the fresh air, even in the snow is very healthy.
We're not saying these things to upset you.
